This lily is absolutely gorgeous and the only way I can get it is through all you lily folks' generous donations, so don't be shy, an amount will be appreciated! There's no line up at all so just step right up and hit the bucket!!! Now I'm not hearing a thing hitting that bucket so come on people, there's a big case of the gimmies coming over me - and I'll share in say, about 5 years. Think of the investment!! Isn't she gorgeous!?!
Well okay, I guess I'll just enjoy the photos for the next few years... lol Click on 'catalog' on the left side and then on 'asiatics' on the left side and then on 'red and orange asiatics' on the right side and it's the last one. What a beauty, eh?

Breeder: Ed Brooman
Slow to grow and multiply, this may very well be the blackest shade of lily available, although it is not very well known. Recurved black-purple petals without a red sheen and inconspicuous spotting. Grows to just over 3 feet, blooms in late July with 10-12 flowers per stem. (1985)2001 Ib Asiatic
Donations please!
...ca-chink...ca-chink... Wow! That's somethin'!
Allow me to enable (heh, heh) in American funds it's only $32.40!
Okay--here's my nickel! Have a ball! Or how about we get a plain white one and PAINT it for you? Or we could give you an old tigerlily bulb and you would be happy for several months--until it bloomed!
ROTFL Thanks guys, it's so great to have friends in high places!!!!!!!
BROKE friends who bought too many garden plants this summer! :)
beautiful!!! have to put on wish list.
yup, gonna do a lot of wishing! Think it'll help? Maybe a Christmas or birthday request would do the trick... the donations just aren't adding up at all! lol
I saw Sun God in a Winnipeg garden this spring. Drool drool. Another one is Martagon Night Flyer. At least I think that is the name. Just about as beautiful and just about as expensive.
It is all a question of winning a lottery, or a couple of scales that just 'fall off' when weeding. Dep weeding you know, to get the dandilion roots. vbg
A few years ago about 9 or 10 of us bought a martagon for $250US. We decided to tissue culture it so sent it off to the lab and ........... every single tube was contaminated. Apparently the bulb is being replaced and this time we will scale it. Which reminds me, must remember to ask about it. Itis called Wine Cup.
We have our lily society bulb sale here in Winnipeg next weekend. Can't wait to see what goodies will be there.
Inanda
$250.00 US? wow, that better be some special lily! I thought the Sun God was plenty expensive. I'll have to google Wine Cup and see what it looks like. Who did you buy it from and/or do they have a website? Really would love to see it.
The problem about weeding deeply enough to find those scales is having to locate a bulb first. I've never seen a live one but a trip to the grower would do it, I suppose. Do ya think they have volunteer weeders???? :)
Have fun at the sale in Winnipeg - go with heavy pockets and come home with light ones!! lol
Jiminy Christmas, kooger! Now why'dja have to go and do that to me?? Of course, I had to add it to my 'Plants I Want' folder.
You know, I seriously wouldn't mind donating a little if we could get a couple more people in on it. I can be patient for my share of the division...
I can donate 5.00 to the fund also Shaz, I had great luck scaling bulbs last year! It is really easy to do.
I would settle for the one named Shirley!!!
I have to find that one its my sisters name and I didn't even know that one existed!!
Also did you see the Ruby Tuesday!! Where is she? Haven't seen her around much?
Alice - I actually ordered a couple of Shirley from the Lily Nook order we split w/Moby and Maxine. I like that one too!
I am kicking myself now, for not seeing it!!!
I ordered the Shirley tulips from my coop because the ones I had somehow came up missing after the move, but I had no idea their was a lily.
My sis and my mom both died about a year apart just over 4 years ago, and now it gives me great pleasure to find things with their names.
I put it on the list for spring! I cannot spend any more money this fall!!!!!
Well, I'm serious. If someone who knows how to do that bulb scaling thingie wants to go in together on that SunGod lily, I'm in! That thing is a beauty. How much can 1 bulb be scaled??
Hi Shaz the scaling is easy, but how much you can do depends on how large the bulb is. I try to do only a few off teh outside so that I am sure not to damage the original bulb.
You just scale the bulb, put rooting powder on them, throw them in dampened vermiculite, put them in a plastic ziploc in a dark cool cupboard and wait two months and magically they grow little roots. The ones I did last winter I started in Feb. I think and they were perfect to put out in the spring.
Alice did they bloom the same summer?
Very cool, Alice. I might just try that with a couple of the ones I've got coming from the co-ops-especially that there Black Jack. I'm in love with that thing, but could only swing getting one-maybe I can make one or two more of it!
Thanks for the info, girl.
No they didn't bloom this year, but they did get nice sized. I think they will bloom next year, at least a little.
You also have to remember I did this last winter when I was bored stiff!!! The bulbs were some that I had from an ebay seller. (trumpet lilies)
When they came they were really niced sized and it was about the same time I had found the info on scaling bulbs, which I will hyperlink here for you.
The original bulb bloomed very nicely and didn't show any effects of what I had done to it, which pleased me.
I would judge what I do by the size of the bulb and what I think I can get away with. If its a small bulb I wouldn't take more than maybe 2 or 3 scales off it.
The directions I used were for fall bulb scaling, and I really was just messing around the first time I tried it.

Sorry to hijack your thread kooger!!!! And didn't even get you any donations!!!!!
I will be glad to volunteer to have you guys buy some of the 40 and 50 dollar bulbs and scale them for you! All I ask is that you don't sue me if it doesn't work!!!!haha I will even chip in my 10.00 dollars for their purchase!!!!
Thanks, again, Alice! I copied & pasted the info from that link to a Word doc.
Would people think we were weird if we had a co-op for just ONE bulb??? LOL.
Gosh, Alice...you could at least put a 'ca-chink' or two in Kooger's cup! LOL
Too bad they don't sell half-bulbs... :)
AT this point if we tried to have a coop for just one bulb I am afraid we would be run out of Dave's or tarred and feathered at the very least!!!!
No doubt, Alice. It's just a shame the ones we want so badly have to be the most expensive isn't it?
No reason to not arrange a purchase offline. I've done it twice this year already with bulbs.
This is true, Brenda :)
Kooger--we're all poor from buying lilies for our own gardens. How about we send you pics of the flowers & some lily perfume?
LOL. Yep. I'll have quite a few fragrant ones, myself. Wonder how many it would take to make up a batch of smell-good?
That'll be as close as I'll get to getting Sun God so I'll take the pics and perfume. :) I have buds on one lily from Green Mtn. Transplants - sure would like to see it but frost warnings tonight - 22 deg.!!!!!!! Ick Ick Ick!! Will probably set records all over the tri state region. You getting any of this blasted cold, Wanda? Toooooooo early - I have 200 tulips to plant, daffs and some clearance phlox, coreopsis, 'Dizzy' lily, hostas and a 'Nimbus'geranium from WW. Just think, spring is only 5 months away!! lol
Morning all. Scaling is very easy. Go to that link and follow directions. I always scale all new lilies just in case squirrels etc. get them. In the spring I usually plant the babies around the stalk of the mother plant and there you are.
This year we (Manitoba Regional Lily Society) bought some bulbs that originally came from Latvia. We have scaled all of them and then sold the centres to members.
When I plant lilies I always just pull off a few scales and return them to named bag so I know what they are.
If you are near a Lily Society, ask if you can buy a little pink paperback called Growing Lilies, by Virginia Howie. It is a great book. $8 in Canada so less in USA. Then, we will soon have you starting lily seed.!!!!
Inanda.
Ginny - Good info!!
I was out planting peonies & lilies yesterday. What great Fall weather here in Iowa! Sunny days & cool nights--perfect!
Forgot to say something. When scaled bulblets finally flower I cut off all buds as soon as I see them forming, so that all energy will go into increasing size of bulb. Dont really want them to flower the first year.
Sometimes just CANT. So I'll let them flower just enough that I can be sure I've got labels correct.
Inanda
That sounds like me with my 2 co-op scapes. I nipped off all the buds but one on each scape and covered them up Fri. night but they're goners. bummer, I so wanted to see them bloom. Thanks for the detailed info on scaling. Think I'll give it a try some time.
Who is serious about going in on this bulb? I emailed the company and they said it is a large bulb and plenty big enough to scale. Any takers?
I will! I meant it!
Great, I think Alice will too but she's busy with her 8,000+ bulbs right now. I kinda think it will have to wait til spring. Don't want that puppy to freeze enroute. That would be bad.
kooger, you have mail ;)
Went & read Landspro site today. He/she talks about a systemic fungicide for bulbs/scales . hmm..... I soak ALL incoming bulbs & rhizomes in a mixture of one part chlorox/javex to ten parts water.
Soak them totally immersed for minimum 30 mins. Sometime I forget and they are soaking for most of a day or so. Rinse well in clear water and then plant. No need to buy fungicide, unless you have some lying around. Still soak soak soak. You do not want to spread the dread lily beetle nor the !@#$% iris borer.
Also, if you want some scales from a lib bulb already growing, just dig around gently till you get to the bulb. Then carefully break off a few scales. Lily plant will never know you were there.
Inanda
For increasing non scaly bulbs like daffs, sprekia etc etc. After bloom is finished , I dig up, cut an X across the basel plate and replant. Easy as pie. I do rub a bit of ajax/comet/bon ami -whattever you have - into wound before replanting. A little tip for next spring.
Good idea - I received a lovely iris borer on a plant from the IA RU. They're gross! Luckily it was still in a pot so didn't get any farther. Another one came from a Menard's iris. It was also potted. Both plants survived and are growing in the garden now. or freezing, I should say. :)
Thanks for all the great tips you've given us on this thread and others too. It's just great when those who know so much more than the garden dummies (who shall remain nameless!) are so willing to teach us dummies. :)
