Greenhorn needs help with Bouganvilla

Denver, CO

Can I transplant a bouganvilla into the ground? I live in Denver, and it will have full hot sun most days, but it does freeze here and snow a lot. If yes, any special advice? If no, any special advie for keeping it going indoors during winter?

Yes, and No. You can plant it out for the summer, but it's a tropical and won't survive winters. Indoors, it needs lots of water, not too warm, avoid drafts, and the best light you can give it. May not bloom inside but should survive.

I have meant to see if I could overwinter one in a dormant stage in the basement but mine died before I could try.

thataligirl, I have three bouganvilleas that i have kept over winter for several years in my small greenhouse. they are in small, that is about 1 gal. hanging containers. Each spring i dig out some of the dirt and add more compost and usually some osmocote. They are hanging in the east end of the greenhouse and usually have some blooms all winter. they spend the summer in light shade in my shade house. It is time for me to be moving them inside very soon. I am in zone 5 as I would guess that you are. If I can help any more let me know. Donna
