Here's something interesting: I've analyzed the logfiles this morning to see what kind of browser folks are using to access DG.
From Sep 1 through Sep 14, we had 515,844 hits (not counting robots).
MSIE: 84.75%
Gecko: 14.22%
Other: 1.03%
Gecko includes the entire family of Mozilla browsers, like Firefox, Galeon, Mozilla, etc.
Other includes everything outside of IE and Gecko, like Safari, Konqueror, etc.

That’s horrible! What are we going to do to get more people using Mozilla?!?! LOL.

I'm in the "Other" category and would switch to maybe Firefox if I could get all my bookmarks from Safari transferred.
darius, google is your friend. :) http://www.intuitive.com/blog/archives/000423.html

If I knew more about computors I would change to Mozilla but I'm just afraid to take the leap.
Mitey interesting Dave .. Thanks for posting the info!
Thanks, Dave. I will try a different browser when I gat a chance, probably after the KYRU.
yardbird, are you concerned about having trouble installing it? If so, it is quite easy, and you can download it at http://www.mozilla.org/ . If you're concerned about getting used to Firefox, the interface is very similar, there is even a theme that looks identical to IE (you can dowload it here: http://pages.prodigy.net/zzxc/ieskin/ ). I’ve heard of people installing it on there friend’s computers without telling them, so they never even notice that they've switched!

yardbird,
I know very very little about computers but I liked what I heard about Mozilla so I followed the links and clicked on "download". I had no trouble following their directions and I use it exclusively now. I am on dial-up and not a very fast one at that, and it was loaded and ready to go in less than 1/2 hour.

Geez, remind self why I allow NO one access to my pooter!! .. ha
Thanks Paul and Eileen I may try it after next week as we will be gone for a few days.
I have Mozilla now too!
Yay Vic! Today, my husband was just telling me I need to work harder to convert everyone I know to Mozilla/Firefox. I have already converted some family members and friends. Most of the people I talk to, that have computers, are DG subscribers. Dave is already doing a wonderful job with the new "Spread Firefox" link at the bottom and everything. My husband said that the Mozilla foundation has set a goal of 100,000 downloads in 10 days to coincide with the new Firefox release last Tuesday. He was pushing me to update at work today to help them meet the goal.
well after kegan was on the other nite i had pop ups like never before and i deleted more than i should of and quarintined all that i could of. I still had pop up at daves!!!!!!! NO way! so i saw the browser thingy down there in the corner , read up on them and said ok time for a change-so far so good!
dave i still may need some help with this puter!!!!!
i have told several people about it too!
TY Dave!
We installed Firefox on Mom's computer and she knows no different...that's how it's always been and she got used to it from the get-go.
notmartha, you have spyware or virus on your computer!
Dave - I've noticed that the PDB, GWD and GBW are not yet listed in the Mozilla Search engine list. I think we'd get more people adding them to their Firefox search engine bar if they could find it......

(can't get a hyperlink for the Gardening category.....click on the Recreation category) The "other" site is listed but not the best garden site on the 'net.

I have Foxfire downloaded on my computer, but I don't use it because all of the folders I have set up are alphabetized in the general listing instead of the folders being grouped together at the top of the listing.
In IE all of my folders are at the top of the listing so it's easy to access the sites I use most (like Dave's Garden).
In IE you can go to the favorites listing, at the very top of your screen, and if you go past the folders and right click on a web site, you are given a "sort by name" option to sort your favorites. This puts all of the folders at the top of the listing (in alpha order) and all of the individual sites in alpha order, too.
I'll keep using IE until I can get all of the folders grouped together at the top of the bookmarks listing in Foxfire.

After reading this post I did a little more searching and downloaded the "Thunderbird" email client.
When I tried to run the software I got a warning that there was no digital signature and that I should only run software from known publishers that I trusted and those that had digital signatures.
What's up? Why wouldn't this software have a digital signature? Why isn't Mozilla a "known company"? Is this because this company is in competition with Microsoft?
I won't run the software until I get some feedback from a few people here at Dave's Garden. Is anyone here using Thunderbird? Do you like it? Are there some/any problems with the software?
Thanks for the help,
Mike
dave how do i get it off!!!!!??????
notmartha,
You can go to this site: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ for a free virus scan. This site was listed in Consumer Reports magazine as one of the top anti-virus software suppliers. I may switch to them when my Norton anti-virus/firewall software subscription expires in about a month. This site found a couple of questionable items on my computer that Norton missed.

Dave, I downloaded the Firefox browser the other day, installed it and immediately had problems with my internet connection. I'm using Starband satellite and a LAN for several other computers in the haouse. The Firefox looked like a great alternative to the currently dangerous IE.
I'm not sure if anything aside from Starband software was affected but I had a bit of trouble getting my modem back online.
Just thought other Starband users might need to be cautioned of possible conflicts.

treelover - I've been using Firefox and Thunderbird for a few months and have converted my husband as well (home and work computers).
If I'm understanding your issue of 'favorites' in Firefox (I've never been an IE user), then I think what you are wanting are your favorite bookmarked websites to be at a listing at the top. You want to have the Bookmarks Toolbar displayed so you can see your bookmarks while surfing. To do this click on View > Toolbars and checkmark the Bookmarks Toolbar. As for positioning certain site links you need to click on Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks. Once there you can add folders for different site topics (I have one for Gardening, another for Financial, etc. Then you can drag your bookmarks to wherever you want them to appear in the list. I hope this is what you are referring to in your first post.
Thunbird is an an excellent email client. I've encounted ZERO problems with it. I did download an extension for to make deleting mail marked as Junk easier. Other than that I've been happy with it as is.
I've also been using the Calendar extension option and last nite discovered the new Mozilla Calendar and Sunbird calendar projects. These are still in development (not final release yet) but are purported to be very stable. The Calendar extension for Firefox/Thunderbird has had a few minor bugs (alarms don't work quite right, but you don't miss anything - they sometimes just don't "snooze" correctly). I've not enough experience with Sunbird yet to evaluate it or give an opinion.
Good luck....I hope you join the wave of users. There are some EXCELLENT forum discussions on all of these products at Mozillazine.org
You can get the info also by just clicking on the little Firefox logo at the bottom of this page :)
Thanks, langbr! It's a little more cumbersome than I would like it to be, but it works.
Another question: Will the various firewall programs work with Foxfire? Most of the Anti-virus/Firewall programs list the browsers that will work with their product and I have not seen Mozilla/Foxfire listed on any of them.
I will probably be changing from Norton AV/F to PC-cillin at the end of the month and these are the browsers that are supported:
Microsoft™ Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 or above
Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 or above
Netscape™ Communicator 7.0 or above
So, everyone who is using Foxfire is not using a firewall or Anti-virus software? Does Foxfire work with the various AV/F software and it's just not listed? Foxfire seems like a great program, but I'm still not convinced that it is a good choice considering the threats out there. I am connected to the internet via cable modem and have a constant connection so a Firewall is a must. I am planning on adding a router, too, for added security.
Thanks for any help,
Mike
Mike...Thanks for that reply. I'm terrible about "disconnecting" my AV software when I install a new program...and I KNOW that causes me trouble. But I never gave the "firewall" a second thought before I installed Firefox. I think I'll just stay the way I am for the time being...I *hate* computers!
:-D (not really...I just hate the hackers who think they NEED to destroy *my* world!)
~julie~
treelover, anytime you see Netscape listed, you are good to go. Netscape is just Mozilla with flashy clothes on. Since Mozilla is freeware, the Netscape people take the Mozilla program and just program a few things into it and then release it as their own program. Isn't that how it works Dave?
Tree - I'm a McAfee person and run AV and Firewall both without problems. Sweezel is right.....If Netscape is ok then so is Firefox.
Julie88,
With Norton, I have not had to disconnect anything when I install a new program/software, so far. I have not had any problems at all. Maybe I should just stick with Norton?
Consumer Reports listed PC-cillin as the # 1 product and Norton AV was # 2.
sweezel & langbr,
OK, thanks, that's good to know. I was more than a little nervous about the possibility that I didn't have any AV/F protection when running Foxfire.
Thanks again,
Mike
I don't have to disable my AV/F for installation on new SW either.
Mike and Brenda...I was just trying to find some other "logical" explanation for the mess up with my satellite connection after installing the FF browser. I'm using AVG (Grisoft's AV) and I've been really careful about not installing *anything* on my computer since spring when something happened that took out my brand new HD. Starband Internet is the pits...but since I have a contract, I'm stuck with it for at least a couple more years. (Does that sound like RIP OFF to you? :-) )
At any rate...thanks for the info.
~julie~
langbr,
I wanted to give the calendar a try as well as download the spellchecker, etc.
Is there an easy way to do that or do I need to uninstall everything I have installed so far and then install the suite? I thought I read somewhere that you shouldn't install a new version over an old version of the browser (and maybe they are the same at this point so it won't matter?)
Thanks,
Mike
Hi Dave:
Haven't heard from you about my problem!
I am not receiving anything from you and haven't been for some time now.
The only way I get to the site is through my deleted mail...
Have the Titan Key and it's great maybe too great as I'm not receiving newsletters!!!!
Just send me mail and I'll reply . That may do it... The mail has to be from the site....
Sandy
Tree - I know that you had to uninstall versions PRIOR to .8 before installing newer versions. But on this last upgrade to .10PR I read the directions and it did not say I had to uninstall the previous version so I just downloaded it and installed and everything was fine. I was at .9 before I went to .10. It did disable all of my previous extensions and themes, so I had to download new .10 compatible ones. I then downloaded the Sunbird calendar.
Everything works fine except I'm having some kind of problem with my Thunderbird email which I've NOT upgraded to the latest so I plan on doing that this weekend. My email works but it doesn't automatically download new mail every 10 minutes like it did before and it won't Send mail after it's been open a few minutes. I have to close Thunderbird and re-open it and then the new mail comes in and I can Send any composed email.
I won't guarantee that installing over an old version is problem-free....I'm just relating MY experience.
Brenda
