.Ohhhh they are all soooooo pretty!!! I want them all...lol!!!
Hi,
I have South facing windows over the lake and they love it. On the North I have windows going up to the peak with the vaulted ceiling; lots of light and I am ashamed to say I have over 80 plants in that living room/dining room area that I have drug in from outside. When I get a chance I will take a couple of pictures and post here.
We don't use that room anyway and I vacuum every day to clean up the debris.
I haven't had time to count how many tropical hibiscus I have in there. Scary!
Nathalyn, The 5th Dimension is just beautiful....I need to find one of those...
Anna
would these survive the winter in my zone or would it have to be dug up
Sorry Kareoke, these are true topicals and I don't leave mine outside once evening temperature drop below 50. Most folks grow these in pots - to which they are very well suited.
I believe that you would have to winter all Tropial Hibiscus inside. I move all of my Tropical Hibiscus into my sun porch once the night turn colder. When the days turn colder I bring them into my house....Then I start the reverse in the spring...
Anna
well even that sounds good to me, will try finding the 5th Dimension
I bought my 5th Dimension from Logees last winter. It was just a small cutting when it arrived, but grew rapidly this summer.
Arlene - - I believe you have Cameo. Is yours still blooming? Mine is the loveliest pale raspberry shade right now (was cream colored all summer).
And Gabriel is the most striking combo of orange and dark purple. It must be the change in temps that is causing the bloom colors to be different.
My Cameo had 5 blooms about 3 weeks after I brought it inside.
When a hibiscus is under stress . . . from moving it, lack of water, transplanting, a blast of cold air through an open window in the winter . . . .
it will pout and do a lot of strange things. A double will bloom single, it can completely defoliate, and yes, most of mine change shades but because I rotate my fertilizers that may play into it. Guess I should keep a journal to figure it out.
Last Winter my Holly's Pride really suffered at my hand . . . . leaves were smaller and smaller but it still bloomed. When I brought the pot out in the Spring, it completely defoliated but produced large flowers.
It took all summer to grow back its big leaves. It didn't produce a bloom all summer. I brought it inside about a month ago and it has been blooming like crazy and dropped very few leaves.
On the other hand, I repotted two tree form ones and they look like they are gonna drop all THEIR leaves. Go figure. They may not bloom this winter and spend all their time working on growth. If it still looks that way, I may give them a good haircut.
I always give mine a very good haircut once they finish all their summer blooms.....
I put one outside one late spring...and a rabbit ate all the leaves off, and trimmed the stems too! I was just sick about it But it wasn't long..and they all came back...twice as much!!
Guess that rabbit did you a favor.
LOL..it sure did!! That hibiscus is huge now!
Marcy_1,
I purchased two plants from Home Depot this spring that are called "Prom Girl". They are double pink (lightish pink) with very deep green leaves. One of the plants has one stem that produces an incredible peach colored flower that is different than the pink ones. Flower is same size, about 4", but looks very tight with what looks like a Pursian cat face deep in the middle. All summer long these plants have given me 2-5 new flowers every day. The peach is slower to develop and doesn't produce as often. I get one peach about every two weeks. Lovely plant. Bush shape/size has remained very stable with little aparant change in size and virtually no yellowing or dropping of leaves. BTW.. I'm in zone 8, plants in full all day sun. During October the pinks, on these two plants, seem to be less full and lighter color but in last week or so returning to normal fullness and color. Might be that I missed a couple of every 10 day fertilizings but not sure. I would certainly buy more of these plants if I ran into them!
I brought my Cashmere Wind in house due to frost and it had bloom on it but bug ate most of it before i could get pic, one more bud maybe i will get pic,of it ,yellow with red throat ,

Don't ya just love the hidden bargains at Home Depot?!
I just wish I had a Home Depot..boo hoo!!! Closest one is over an hour's drive away! Guess that's what happens when you are in the boonies!!
Mine is 3 hours away in our state capitol; I have a dr appt there tomorrow so will check it out but this time of year in Iowa, there will probably be no plants left.
Thanks all of you for posting such lovely Hibiscus photos. I have only two tropical hibiscus, and they are in pots that I move outside in summer and bring in the fall. Both have been blooming constantly since i brought them in. I don't know the names as I have had them several years and the name lables have disappeared. Donna
Wow Hibiscus...yours are still outside??? I guess I didn't realize they could take that much cold?
Gloria, How much do you trim yours back before bringing them inside? I had read to wait and trim them back in the spring - - but trimming them back now would sure free up a lot of space.
I have one that I planted in the ground this year that is huge and was wondering if I could trim this one back alot in order to bring it inside for the winter. Otherwise, it is just too big for me to try and save.
Think how much you trim them back is in relationship to how big the root system is. You can easily take off 1/3 and they may not bloom much during the winter as they will work on branching. Continue to fertilize during the winter and it will set them up for many summer blooms.
I now have 80 tropicals that I have brought inside for the winter. As a new gardener, my bigest mistake has been over watering. Throughout the winter you need a spray bottle to mist them about 3 times per week. They want that tropical environment. And, of course, a nice south window for light. I think hibiscus do well just to stay in their pots and here they almost do better in the winter than outside in the summer.
Nat: I only trim back enough to make room for the plant inside. They bloom for me all winter. Cut just above a leaf node, making plants about 2' tall, or more. I feed all through the winter, they are under florescent lights.
Thanks Arlene and Gloria. As we are expecting much cooler temperatures tomorrow night, I started moving tropicals inside last night. And tonight I will have to find a temporary place for everything else. Unfortunately, moving all the plants inside is very much like putting together a puzzle. While I can get them all inside, getting them organized where I can actually get to things to inspect them and keep them watered is another thing.
Good suggestion to mist the plants a few times a week. And I think I will cut back El Capitolio and Snow Queen by 1/3. Both are really large and it is not a goal to have these two blooming during the winter.
I have red and the peach El Capitolio, they both grow out of bounds, like 4' tall x 2'-3' wide.
Yep Gloria - - my red El Capitolio and Snow Queen are both that large (with thin branching everywhere) and I think triming would help them to be denser. I just received a peach El Capitolio about a month ago and I am amazed at how much the cutting has grown just in that short amount of time.
My SnowQueen didn't bloom a whole lot this summer, but it's covered in buds now. The little red blooms are fairly nondescript, but the foliage is lovely - - especially when the edges turn red.
Those two are so easy to start. Started some in just water, under lights, no cover/plastic bag. I do like them both!
Just bought another Hibiscus.....I will need help to ID as there was no name with the plant.... I will post a picture as soon as possible...
Cold and windy here today.....So windy that a little boy who was visiting the Royal Botannical Garden in Hamilton with his school was badly injured by a large tree that was blow down....
Hibiscus....What is the name of the Orange coloured Hibiscus that you posted on this forum...it is another beautiful bloom....Thanks for sharing.
I haven't been able to cut mine back yet as they are all still blooming........they look so good. My Red Hibiscus tree has 12 blooms on it today.....I will try and take a picture to post
