Protecting plants in storms...

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

Well here comes Ivan. during Charley and Frances, I bunched my container plants that I could all together in the corner of two fences and in a stand of bamboo. Did pretty well considering. some of course I brought in, but I think they would have fared better outside...air conditioning most of the time we had power didn't agree with some of them. Does anyone have any suggestions about protecting plants during wind/rain storms?

Hi Dale,

Other than bringing them in, you've done about as well as you can. I bring everything in that can be, and the others get set up against the side of the house that I think will fare the best, depending on which direction the storm is coming from.

Good luck, and I hope it misses us both.

Hi Chris,
But if you have to be gone after the storm passes, and the plants are inside with with no light (storm shutters) which is worse? I will be ordering more from you my friend because even Frances got a couple of the Cannas that were coming along so nicely. This is getting old, isn't it? The lines at Home Depot are in the 100's, people waiting on plywood trucks that may arrive or not. I am so thankful I decided to get shutters a few years back! Good luck, Chris!

Hi Dale,

It really depends on the plants. My Adeniums and Euphoribias all come in, and they can stay in for a while. They may not look so hot when I return, but they're still kicking.

It's getting far past old. I'm completely sick of it. I'm not even boarding up. At this point I hope it comes and blows the whole house away, so I can start over. The courtyar on the house has 5 sets of sliding glass doors, and then large windows above that leading almost to the roof line. We won't be in the house if this thing comes, so I'm not worried.

are you going to get out of there? There's a nice thread on this in the "Weather Forum" if you haven't seen it.
