Abigail, have you thought of putting the cannas in pots? That way you just put pot and all away for the winter. I did the same thing with dahlias because I cannot dig them.

Just found this wonderful board so am not ready to trade plantsseeds yet. If you have some I would love to get some. I've just moved but I have Donna Dewberry's video and templates that is languishing somewhere (I've just moved to a farm). I can send that to you as soon as I can find it (I'm unpacking as fast as I can - I moved here three months ago but was shoveling loads of manure and compost to my clay beds (I miss my old gardens, I miss my babies waaa :). I;m not dure yet how to post privately so excuse me if I've goofed in replying here.
