You first Elaine

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

After the last couple of days 'stand' is a euphemism. However I did pick almost a pound of strawberries from my little boulevard patch last night. Still have not had my first ear of corn from my own patch. Cool, wet and buggy.

Well.........My hardy hibiscus is starting to bloom.

Hibiscus.....a winner from Wal Mart. A tree that was very cheap and has been loaded with blooms all summer.

Thought I'd better load them quick, this weekend I'll be potting them up (or down) and bringing them in...words out that next week we might have a high of 12C. :(

Thank you for the opportunity Elaine.....hope everyone takes and posts their pictures quick, methinks our season (prairies for sure) is quickly coming to an end.

I'm really jealous! My gardens are just about blown now. My yard is covered in cottonwood leaves, and the rains have begun. Slugs are having an orgy under every leaf.

Carol have you had frost or is it the abnormal heat wave that's making your leaves drop?

Thalictrum delavayi aka Meadow rue

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I think you've hit the nail on the head, Lilypon. I think it's the heat. It does seem a bit early for leaves to drop, but it always seems too early for me! Here's a photo from last year, and you can see a few leaves on the lawn behind my flower bed, so I guess we have some leaf droppage this time of year. The cottonwoods are first, then the willows, and lastly, the alders.

Ah thank you echoes (knew you'd come through).....I was sure it was a rue but couldn't remember the proper name.

I feel for you Carol.....here our gardens are usually fried by this time of year. Many of my perennials that normally would be just hanging on are blooming their heads off. I still have some lilies (land lubbing kind) that still have an occassional bloom......usually they are done by mid July. However I'm telling my maters to get a move on.....boy do we need heat!!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Yes, it seems we've traded seasons! My usual brassica crops were a bit of a failure this year, as were many of our cool weather loving annuals. The violas became leggy, but the petunias, that normally have powdery mildew by now, are really quite beautiful.

Your petunias look lovely! Imma kicking myself I teased you about your problems growing tomatoes up there.....sometimes I should keep my mouth shut!! ;)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Should I send you our recipes for green tomato relish, Lilypon? LOL!

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Oh PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;) p.s. I mean it! You know where my email addy is....I will be very, very grateful!! :D

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

OK, Lilypon, I confess that I don't make green tomato relish because...sob, sob, I never have enough green tomatoes to bother! I called Ceeads to find out if she makes it, since she has better luck growing 'green' tomatoes, and she said she just makes jellies. So.... I looked it up on the web: http://southernfood.about.com/library/rec01/bl10712d.htm

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

LOL...thank you Carol! ;) I've usually just had to worry about what to do with bushels of reds but I think I'll be looking at your posted site this year. If anyone else has some great ones please think of me!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Sounds like a good thread to start in the Recipe forum, Lilypon! 'Short Season Sad & Sorry Green Tomato Relish'

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

I just looked at it and now my tummy is growling....... Off to find something good to eat. Thanks again Carol.

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

Imma heading there now!!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

I'll keep an eye out for that thread. Maybe I'll pickle my tomato (singular), too.

Here's what's going on in my garden. We've had the unusual hot dry summer, but damp the last few weeks. Hope there aren't too many pictures.

Weez, let me interupt for a moment, seeing as you've dropped by. Any idea what these poppies are? They were in some extra seeds you sent me that were.labeled a saxifrage.
