DW tells me that butter is up to $4.29/lb. here! What are ya'll paying?
Butter
My word, that's worse than milk (which I seldom buy)! I haven't bought any butter in several months. When I go to Sam's I usually buy 2 packages of 4 pounds each and freeze them, and I still have 1-2 pounds left.
Sam's butter, like most commercial butters, has more water in it than I'd really like, but probably no more than a name brand like Land O'Lakes.
We get it at Sams, too. She noticed that price when she went in the store to get something else.
That's awful. I don't think I have ever paid as much as $3 pound at Sam's.
It's $3.97 for organic butter here and the only reason I know (cause I would buy the stuff regardless if we need it) is that my 97 year old Grandma makes me give her weekly reports about the cost of butter, flour, eggs and coffee since she can't go to the shops anymore. She lives in Abilene, TX.
Grandma's do that. Mine did. Now I'm doing it, too?
LOL!! Guess so! And guess what else? I probably will too! hee hee
$3.49 yesterday. I usually look for it on sale and stock up, but "corn" season takes more butter and I have about used up my reserve supply.
Same with me, MaryE...and I haven't priced it latley as I am like Darius...end of my reserve though. I LOVE butter!! Jo
Its better for you than margarine!
Oh my..I better check on sales...baking season is just around the corner!
I won't eat margerine. Still remember mashing the color capsules into oleo as a child.
I remember my mother really catching it from my uncles & aunts (she was a city gal) when she bought some of that new fangled stuff! She argued that it was much cheaper AND grown by farmers! Didn't fly. We had a dairy farmer in the family. My DW was raised on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. WE NEVER BUY MARGERINE! Thats good cuz I much prefer butter.
I have not checked recently, but I think it was $3.49 each when I bought two pounds (one salted, one unsalted) at walmart couple weeks back. I just stick with the generic walmart brand too - not much difference in brands in the big box store. I am with everyone else on margerine. I refused to buy it for the longest time, but now the stepkids live with us and they have to have Country Crock. It took them a good 3 or 4 months to break me down where I bought it for them, but I still correct them when they call it "butter". Of course they also call Miracle Whip "mayo" - HA! LOL
Of course, my husbands LDL Cholesterol was 186 when checked last month, so I really need to cut back on the butter. :-(
I pay l0.00 for 5 one pound squares at sams it's not organic though, just real butter,

Here in my neck of the woods in Ontario we pay 3.89 lb. for salted butter and 4.29 lb for unsalted. All of the stores are the same price because they have that we will meet our competitors price thing in place.
Dianne
I don't find my receipt right now but I think I paid about $2.50 for a pound of quarter pound sticks of HiLand brand butter.
My father was a dairy farmer too. I also remember the yellow coloring packets. It was my job to work the coloring into the white stuff. Then Daddy got the milk cows and we are real butter ever after. I use to buy the tub kind that was always soft no matter what the temp(except the freezer of course)but no more. I had cows too for a few years so our children got to eat a lot of homemade butter.
It's on sale for $1.99 a pound here this week. When it's not on sale can run almost double.

I'll have to remember to check when I go to the store tomorrow. I don't think I've bought butter since Christmas time (and I don't use margarine at all). I don't eat bread very often.
Atkins!!!
Our local grocery chain (with NO competition) has Land o' Lakes for $3.29 lb, their store brand on sale for $2.29 / pound (has LOTS of water) and organic butter was $4.29 / pound. I decided to wait for a trip to a city and check out Sam's.
I buy it at Sam's and 4 lbs is 9 something, but I had to get some at Kroger last week and the Kroger brand was almost $4.00 a lb.
Can I tell you a TRUE STORY...dentist had been telling me that I have a very high palate, but did not go into explanations..when I mentioned this to my dental surgeon he told me why [2 reasons] cannot remember the other one, but eating margarine causes this problem in children who eat margarine continuously [ cannot remember the rest of it my feeble mind forgets] but for us growing up after world war 2 [dating myself ugh] we never even knew what butter tasted like so margarine it was or ''dripping'' on our bread... [this was in the UK..rationed for years]...I had another dentist agree with this...so children eat your butter up..
Go figure!
Dentist also told me that I had the smallest mouth he had ever worked on ...so no-one can ever tell me that I have a big mouth...wonder if that has an explanation tooooo ??
[true story]
maybe I am '' e l o n g a t e d'' !!!!
were you premature at birth, marion?
No Daisy I was a big bouncing 10 lbs so cannot blame it on that...just demure I guess growing up [ as in very dainty].....it could have been the bright red hair...a poster child !!!!!!
Price of butter per pound at Ralphs (chain grocery store, owned by Kroger) Note: This is per pound (four sticks), not 8 ounces (2 sticks). Eight oz. is $2-something, but I didn't write it down.
Land o' Lakes - $5.39
Challenge - $5.39, on sale for $3.99
Danish Creamery - $5.39, on sale for $3.99
Tillamook - $4.99, on sale for $3.99
organic, both brands - $5.99
store brand - $3.99, on sale for $3.89
gasoline is $1.99 for the lowest octane
By the way, I have a small mouth, too. My mom bought nothing but margarine when I was growing up. In fact, I've only started using butter in the past few years after learning how bad hydrogenated fats may be.

My gosh, Kelli those prices are awful! Everything in CA is too expensive for the likes of me. Can you tell that I have the fixed income blues? Gotta be a song by that title. It would be a must for me if there is one.
Tell the managers at Ralph's that I was in Kroger today and they had their brand of butter 2/$5.... Ralph's needs to get on board :) I don't like Kroger, neither does my hubby, Ralph. :)
well i perfer butter but about 3 months ago had to go to margerine so not eating much bread , but i love butter and crackers dipped in coffee or milk but butter was nearly 4.00 lb . so i quit again . country crock..now. land o lakes is favorite since from up minne-wisc. way...
My grampy K. used to drive across town to save a nickel on a loaf of bread. He was used to when gas was cheap and stayed that way. He would show me his hearing aid that the government paid for and put it back in the box and put it in a drawer and turn the Red Sox game up really loud so he could hear it. I still miss him.
:-)
A few weeks back foodtown had challenge butter for 1.77. the next week it was just 77.... Now it is 2.97. I have 7 in my freezer. I have a friend who bakes cakes and cookies for a living.. She said the cookies baked wth challenge were alot better. They also had a coupon on the box to cut out for 1.00 of 1
3 US$ here in Pakistan.
Butter has been $3.99/lb and was recently on sale for $2.99/lb, but since milk has dropped in price I am keeping my fingers crossed that the cost of butter will be going down soon as well.
Peterson89, I remember when oleo was illegal and my parents would drive over the state line into Wisconsin to buy it. Why they did I don't know because I was too young, but I remember the signs saying "Yes, We Have Oleo" as soon as we crossed the state line. The next time I visit my dentist I am going to ask him if his family eats butter or margarine and mention your post. :o)
Yesterday I went to Albertson's here in Long Beach and butter was $5.29 per pound or 2 for $10.00. Yikes! And that was not even organic butter.
I am spoiled by Trader Joe's Market.
Oleo was illegal?
Yeah it was in some places. The dairy lobby was (and is?) a very, very powerful group. Where it was legal the manufacturers were not even allowed to color it. The packaging included a capsule with food coloring that the consumers had to use to color it yellow themselves. Strange but, true!
carol17 I will ask my oral surgeon again, he is a great friend of Dr. Hal Huggins, it was Dr.Huggins, that gave me the lengthy technical explanation over the phone [which I promptly forgot] I need to take notes..ha..
no good at remembering things these days..how interesting about oleo [ I hate to think what they put in it] many years ago government agencies and dental used to be honest about the poisons they were feeding us...Let us knowif you find out about the margarine and I will ask again [ and try to remember this time] marion
Marion, ("government agencies used to be honest") Like when Coca Cola used to put cocaine in "coke?" Originally margerine was made from soy beans. :-)
