New idea

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Yes, you'd think I have better things to do with my time than come up with more stuff for folks to do on Dave's Garden, but hey, this is my home away from home (actually, it's my home within my home).

My new idea is this... I just noticed some of our newer members posting comments on the PDB. I simply emailed them and thanked them for their contribution and encouraged them to continue to add information about the other plants they grow as time permits. It encourages additional contributions as well as offers a nice pat on the back for taking the time to offer their insights.

The plan is to let people know that their input is valuable (which it is!). The goal is to keep them around DG assisting others, providing information and benefitting the site as a whole. The only thing it takes is one or two people peeking into the PDB from time to time and seeing who is posting new photos, comments, etc. Offer them a kind word, a thank you or anything that lets them know they are valuable here at Dave's.

Thanks from someone new.

Good idea, smilin.

Also- There are a lot of questions in the comments. Without stepping on toes, could those be moved to a forum as a thread so that the PDB isn't full of questions as much as it it full of info and questions will have a chance of getting answered?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Actually when I see someone asking a question within a PDB comment, I do email them to let them know about our forums (assuming they aren't subscribed - which takes a few seconds and a mouseclick to determine. If they ARE a subscriber, then I have no qualms at all about emailing them to nudge them to the right area for questions.)

As an editor, I also edit out questions, since the PDB comments really aren't intended to become a discussion forum-type threaded conversation.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

Wow! Good on ya, Terry! Should we be alerting you when we see a question?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Probably. Use the "report an error" link when you see an entry whose comments need to be cleaned up. (I'm now ducking for cover before the other PDB admins start throwing things at me ;o)

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

LOL! I figured you'd be running scared!

BTW- just a quick hijack here- I entered a definition to the Botanary. How long does it take to be approved? Also, Poppysue and I had a question about megapotaMicum vs megapotanicum......

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Terry, I have seen many questions posted in the PDB... always wondered if they ever got answered or lost in the jungle. I will try to remember to post an error when I come across them in the future.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Botanary is on a summer hiatus right now. I try to remember to release a few each Friday, but that's been hit or miss. I'll try to remember to take a peek in there today if I get a chance ;o)

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

No biggie- enjoy a hiatus from something!!

Megapotamica, -us, -um = of or from a big river.
So says my bible.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

And your bible says what about Megapotanica?

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

It has to be a mispelling. Potamos was the ancient Greek word for a river.
I tried a Google search for Megapotanica and found 1 only in the whole web and that was for
Octea megapotanica
I then searched for Octea megapotamica and found that, so I suggest that all
megapotanica's are misspellings!

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

See- I suggested that to Poppysue in regards to a Botanary listing and she humbly offered that she wasn't sure but that megapotanicum but that it might be another plant type than the abutilons which we were discussing.

kennedy- could you look up megapotanicum and megapotamicum in the botanary and give your opinion?

Thanks! : )

(and I found them both on google)

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

From the Botanary
megapotanicum Of the big river (Rio Grande Brazil)
megapotamicum Large river

But no plants in the PDB match megapotanicum.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

So is megapotanicum real?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I would say that megapotanicum is a misprint/misspelled (i.e., error) in Botanary.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

That is kind of what I though because of the definitions being so oddly similar but no examples anywhere. Thanks- I need to get one of them big books likes what you got. : )

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Mesopotamia, maybe? ;) Sounds like another linguini, which I speak no better.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10b)

umm...sure enough, that looks to be a real plant there, poppysue.

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

Not proven,
I googled for Thelesperma megapotanicum and got 29 hits.
I then googled for Thelesperma megapotamicum and got 302 hits.
It could be another case of misspelling!

Blenheim, New Zealand

In a old book the Pronouncing Dictionary lists,
megapotamicum. see Megas, megalos (big).
The "Big River" commemorated is the Rio Grande.
no mention of megapotanicum
