Seeds for active Davers

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

These would be good newbie seeds. They are all Rosamond x Unknown. Star (Butterfly X L'Amour) is the most likley father as it was growing right into the Rosamond. But Stubbby , ( L'Amour and Butterfly) and white suaveolens (Isabella X Esmeraldas) were near by also.

given only with the agreement of the usual hybridizer rights as posted on this forum.

Email me your address and tell me how many you want. I was thinking of dividing each pod into 5 or 10 seed piles (depending how many people there are) so you all get a few from the different pods in case their fathers are all different. That would be more fun.

I will clean and dry them and hope to get them out this week.

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Hey Shelly! I'm here, just been really busy -- we had a storm last night with 2" of rain in a couple of hours. Today has been clean-up, and a deer ate one of my almost-ripe seed pods off the tree. The perp dropped it not too far from where she stole it, and I went ahead and planted the seeds. Dunno if they'll sprout or not!

Edited to add -- welcome back Kell! You've been missed!!! Those pods look great!!!

When would be the best time to start the seeds? I cannot wait!! SherryLike

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Sherry: It depends on how you can handle them this winter. I have a few that I started on 8-14-04 and I will start some more at the beginning of each month, with the bulk being around the first of December. I decided to stagger them this year. You will have to use grow lights if you keep them inside, or a greenhouse. If you start them now, they will be pretty large by the time its safe to plant them outside. Hope this helps -- Gretchen

I would be interested in this, it sounds exciting to be a part of it all! I grow daturas, and have a brug cutting going wild by my pond, but never from seed!!! Totally agree with the terms and conditions.

I have plenty of canceled stamps if you are interested or I will be glad to pay postage. Thanks, Melba

Gretchen, your babies are so healthy, they are precious!!! My daughter and I were chatting, already, about next spring and, like you, we intend to stagger our plants, from now on. I'm not sure if that will mean that the brugs bloom any differently than they do now, but it seems that all my brugs bloom at once, then there is a dry spell, until they flush again. Of course, when I moved my daddy here, I didn't feed them for three weeks, maybe four, but that was during one of our severe raining spells. I've beefed up the fert and, with exception of some seedlings, every brug I have should be blooming soon. We cannot wait. BTW, did you use rockwool??? I cannot see any in your seedlings...

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

Hi Sherry -- no I did not use RW on this batch. I've ordered some, and will not plant any more seeds until I have it to use... These were started in a soil less seed starting mix, and germinated in 4 days. I planted them on the 14th and transplanted them to regular potting soil on the 28th. No problems whatsoever, I just like the RW better :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I am sure I will have enough. I have a few more pods on Rosamond I need to pick. Make sure you email me with your address and how many seeds total you can handle. Figure you will lose at least 25% due to one thing or another.

I will split the seeds up so you will not get more than 10 from 1 pod, so you will get a variety.

I love rockwool also Gretchen. I know alot of the good brug growers like Brugie and Monika much prefer Monika's method, but I had much better luck with the rockwool.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

okay a newbie on seed starting and probaly will sound dumb as the brugs i have had in the past were all started from cuttings.

any way my question is

whats the easiest way to start them and what is rockwool??

can i start them in moss?? i know i have to soak and peel them then what?? thanks

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Hi Kell, any left? I would love to give some a home. I wasn't initially impressed with rockwool, but I think I'll give it another try.

Thanks
LindaSC

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Imzadi, have to go to work so have no time to chat. Do a search for rockwool. There is a huge thread on the special threads that Brugie started and another on regular Dave's that I started. You should get all sides of the rockwool question from them.

I am sure I have some left Linda. Didn't I just send you a bunch a few weeks ago? You will have a brug farm.

I was just looking in my brug forest and see I have tons more pods in there.

That is my brug ghost in the middle, protecting my trees from harm!

Marie: here are a couple of good, informative threads on rock wool:

I buy mine from Better Grow Hydro.

http://www.bghydro.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=SFNT

After much research, I found their prices to be the lowest: $9.95 for a slab of 200 1X1X1.5" cubes. As soon as the seedling has sprouted with the two cotyledons (seed leaves present), I transplant to a 4" pot with plain old potting soil. Good luck! Gretchen
