Unwatching Forum threads

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Dave is it possible to add an option on our members page that would allow us to 'unwatch' threads from our list of watched threads without the need to visit each one?

Spokane Valley, WA(Zone 5b)

Kewl idea! My thread watching list is getting rather long so a quick 'pruning' option would be nice. :)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I would like that too. It took me forever last winter to clean mine out.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

I've spent a couple of hours today working on it, and have managed to clean up only about 1/5th of it....didn't realize how large it had gotten.
I hope this is something Dave can do....................

I am clicking Watch Thread after this post because there is a need that has been expressed to have threads be watched automatically as an option (if you start one or reply) and this feature could be part of that. : )

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Just to throw out another perspective....why unwatch a thread? Dave has assured us the thread watcher doesn't present any server/resource issues.

For example, let's say you started a thread two years ago. With a mass cleanup tool, today you unwatch it and many others. But tomorrow someone replies to your thread. Will you know it was resurrected? Would you like to be able to read and respond to the new post?

If you were a new member and posted to that thread, not realizing its age (it takes a while for newbies to get their bearings, remember), and you never got a reply to your question, or any acknowledgement at all - how would that make you feel?

Most people don't spend a lot of time browsing through their watched threads and there's no urgency to keep the list pared down like an eBay "watched auction" list where you have a limited amount of time to take action on the items you're watching.

Just something to consider ;o)

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

I agree with Terry. Some of those old threads are really a nice read for newbies or fairly newbies.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

I agree - Sundry just resurrected an old thread she and I were posting to last fall and she shared some REALLY GOOD info in the recent post. I'm very glad I didn't miss it.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

True, but those threads would than reappear on Page #1, and we could than choose to re-read, re-watch, or not.
If it's not a feature Dave wants that's fine......I'll just go back to deleting them manually.

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

I clean out the stale threads regularly to keep the list manageable. It is quite tedious at present and I, too, would appreciate a nifty shortcut.

Valinda, CA(Zone 10a)

What is to manage? If there is no activity on a thread than it does not pop up. If one grows tired of a thread than it is easy enough to unwatch that one thread. Thow dozens or hundreds that are dormant do not do anything. Sometimes they come alive again and then i am glad that I am watching them.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

It is a matter of taste I guess......I prefer my list of 'watched threads' to be veiwable in a more streamline manner. I do not like having to look back through page after page after page of threads than no longer mean anything to me an probably never will.
If Dave can put the quick fix function up great I'll use it....those that don't feel the need can just ignore it....but for those of us that want it , it will be available to us to use.
This may be a moot point as I have yet to hear from Dave as to if this is even an option. He may be waiting to see what the responces to this thread are....so far it appears 50/50.

Churchill, Victoria, Australia(Zone 10a)

The list of watched threads is certainly unmanageable, mine contains 2308 threads! I don't see any value in looking at this list. If you select Home, you get access to all the Forums that you are watching and just before that is a link to each of your Watched threads that has fresh activity in it. This is never an unmanageable list, I never have more than half-a-dozen at a time here and it is rare that I don't want to look at them,
I see no value in pruning out the list of watched threads. I might unwatch the odd one if it digressed from its original topic. Most die right down, but are still potentially interesting, if someone picks them up again in the future.

rikerbear, don't despair!
Your point is well taken and we stand behind you.
Hip hip, three cheers, and all that sort of thing!

Edited to add a link for late-night readers.

Oh I'm not in dispair, just not sure why it matters to some whether the function is there or not. Seems simple to me, if you want to use it use it, if you don't than don't. We don't even know if it's possible or not..............
Thank you for the cheer tho Ulrich :)

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Please note my two cents' worth in the thread I just linked to. It made no impression then either.

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

hmmmm, I see Dave never addressed the quesstion reagrading this issue than...wonder if it's just not possible.
Oh well, I've spent nearly 5 hours cleaning mine up, and am almost done now. For me it was merely hundereds of threads, those with thousands make me shudder :) LOL

Manhattan Beach, CA(Zone 11)

Dave is bound to pop in here with the crack of dawn. Meanwhile we will surely lie awake all night worrying about this. LOL

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

Not me......... LOL
Soon as the Olympics are ended for the night I'm off to bed :-)

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Marc - I understand your point that the old threads with new posts would then be on page #1, bu-u-u-ut, lots of times I only have time to look at my watched threads and don't check the individual forums. 'Tis also true that it wouldn't matter to those that don't want to unwatch threads what those who do want to unwatch threads do! :)

Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

:)

I guess we'll see what Dave has to say......................

This feature is complete. :) You can delete up to 50 at a time and the feature should be self-explanatory. Take a look!

You Sir are indeed AWESOME!!!!! Thank you so very much. I finished updating mibe manually last evening, but will use this in the future.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

You're very welcome. :) Ulrich, no gramercy for me?

Sorry, Dave, just got here. Not surprised but ever so grateful.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

I have to say I went and looked at mine and thought about unmarking some. But I found some great threads I had forgotten about so decided to leave it alone. I even found the first picture of me ever posted on DG. (Think I can talk Dave in to deleting that thread? lol )

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

As long as it is allowed, I will keep thousands of watched threads. They do me no harm and if an old one is rediscovered I know about it. This is the one part of DG I really like.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

ditto what weeds said

Spokane Valley, WA(Zone 5b)

How nice to have yet another tool in the DG toolbox! I tried it earlier this everning and really like it. Now, I did limited myself to minor pruning, though, 'cause most of my watched threads are for reference and future use! :)

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Dave...You are indeed AWESOME!!!!! I love this feature and I just found it by accident today! Wonderful!

("gramercy"....I don't think that is a Southern word, is it?) (Luv it though!) ;>)

I doubt I'll ever use this new feature but am happy that
♫Dave has come ♫ to Save the Dayyyyy♫...

He sure makes a lot of people happy, eh?

Much obliged for that!
