Hope to get involved in a Mint co-op if they have one this year.
Does anybody know of any mint or herb co-ops?
I just ordered a few plants from Richters but could definately get more! ;-)
My Richter order is:

Oregeno & Thyme Mint (JW)
Banana Mint
I also got these fragrant Thymes...

I've ordered from richters , and all the plants came in dead, from being wrapped i n plastic.
Hi all, newbie here (new to DG, not to gardening!) and after reading through this entire thread, I couldn't stand it any longer and had to place an order for some of these mints through Fragrant Fields! Other than chocolate mint and spearmint, I had no idea there were so many available!

Welcome to the herb obsession club! ;-)
Thanks for the welcome, I think I'm going to like it here! :-)
Hi there, I noticed someone way up high on this thread mentioned that mint was e-v-i-l....and today I may agree. I was cleaning around my monarda and notice all these roots that didn't belong..... lo and behold, my mint had come from ten feet away and attacked the monarda. It is so encased in mint roots that I think it may be strangled. I am not sure if I should continue to try to did it out, and probably damage the monarda; or just let it go and see what happens. The mint monster strikes again!
Has anyone ever buried large pots of mint to keep them under control?
I do. I actually grow them in pots around the yard and garden and in late fall, I either bury them under a pile of mulch or compost. Dig them out in the spring and off we go.
I have ordered from Richter's in the past and my plants were fine. You just never know.
Last spring, 2005, I ordered 16 mints, very nice ones. Maybe this year will be different and I WILL give them a 2nd chance because I was not impressed. They were pretty and green but their fragrance was only evident when I broke their leaves, and, even then, we could not tell one from the other and a couple were unpleasant. This really isn't a complaint, because they have done what I wanted them to do, quick, abundant, low growing green leaves, so that I could plant other stuff in and around them. I was very disappointed with the old standards spearmint, peppermint, etc. I didn't try tea, but cooking with the mint was like having green 'stuff' in the food. I LOVE mint jelly but I suppose the flavor is artificial. Do you think it might be the weather and the soil??? Or something else??
Hmmm. I think mint jelly is probably spearmint rather than peppermint, which might make a difference. Everyone's nose & tastebuds are different, but I love my 2 "standard" mints (Chocolate Peppermint & 'Kentucky Colonel' Spearmint). I use the peppermint mosty in tea (and as a filler in flower arrangements because it just smells so good), and I use the spearmint in everything else (with garlic in lamb-burgers, minced & tossed with buttered peas, etc). I have to admit I didn't do much with my new mints last year other than a couple of sprigs in iced tea... they didn't grow like crazy, probably through no fault of their own (I'm thinking their pots were too small and therefore they didn't have enough space or enough water), but they made it through the winter, and I've promised myself to "do something" with them this year!
I like using my mints in iced tea. I make "southern sweet tea" and boil the water and sugar together. I add the mint leaves with the tea bags and let it steep and then strain them out and serve over ice. I really like the minty flavors and have enjoyed the marshmallow mint in ice tea.
Sherry the scent and flavor is indeed subjective (due to the way individuals smell/taste) and may also be affected by the environment.
