Wow, Jenni, you are lucky to be up and going. We've had ice storms here too, two that were huge, our electricity was off for 14 days, and we are all electric, whew. I'm glad last year was a good one for you!!!
Jim Westerfield Mints
Kathy-Ann,
Where did you get the hazelnut latte mint? Is it one of the Jim Westerfield mints too? I think I'd also like to look for a scented geranium called Nutmeg. I found a website Mulberry Creek that has some, I just keep putting off ordering it. http://mulberrycreek.com/cgi-bin/herbman/page.cgi?p=a_z&letter=S
-Juli
Juli, I got my Jim Westerfield hazlenut latte mint @ fragrantfields.com, on the www. They were VERY nice and a pleasure to work with. Good luck!!
I got mine in a trade, I have of mint traders that I trade with, they are mint collectors too.
Your link didn't work but that's ok. I went to order from fragrant hills but the shipping costs more than the plant itself. Crazy! I was also looking at the Sister Julie's Wintergreen but they were sold out of that so I think I will wait. I can't justify paying $3.95 for a $2.99 plant! I did order from Mulberry Creek the Chocolate Mint and Nutmeg scented geraniums and a Nutmeg scented Thyme plus a few others cuz you have to order in sixes. I think I ordered an English Lavender and Stevia and Tansy.
-Juli
Juli, maybe that's the minimum postage. I ordered lots and I didn't think it was too bad. I wanted particular ones, so it was worth it, to me, to get the ones I had been searching to find...I don't like the stiff postage rates either, but ordering what I want online, is cheaper for me than going to a nursery 1) because all are not in my town and 2) when I get there, I always buy more than I planned, whew!!
www.fragrantfields.com I ordered 5 or 6 shipping was 6.?? wasn't bad at all. ordering one plant from any place the shipping is going to be at least 3.85 it does make sence to order more than one to get your money's worth in shipping charges.
I understand about the postage thing that's why I said I will wait until they have the Sister Julie's Wintergreen before I order the Iced Hazelnut. I love wintergreen flavor. I've looked into the winterberry bush but I need to wait until the trees around here get bigger because it needs full shade. It says that the Sister Julie's Wintergreen has true wintergreen flavor. Anybody growing this one? Is it true? What mint is your favorite flavor?
-Juli
I just ordered the sister julie's wintergreen mint, I lost my Julie's sweet citrus mint though, i'm bummed over this, it was in a pot, and my mints don't do well in pots. My favorite out of the 58 I have, that's a hard question. I don't guess I have a one fav, I have a couple, lavender & banana, these are my fav scented ones, not flavors, I don't make mint tea any more, no body likes it but me.
I have the berries and cream mint and also a lime mint that I purchased a few weeks ago from the Tulsa Flower and Landscaping Show. They'll need to get a bit larger before I start trading them off, though. Chocolate mint sells for $1.00 per 3" pot around here. It's my favorite of all the mints, so far.
Goodness where did you order your sister julie's wintergreen from?
-Juli
from fragrant fields, must have ordered before she ran out,
I ordered one too, mine died, I lost three, broke my heart!!
Ok, I'm gonna have to look somewhere else for that wintergreen mint now ya'll done and bought out the farm :~)
-Juli
LOL , Sorry
It might be fun to do a mint swap. I participated in a veggie seed swap that was fun. Since it grows like weed we could do starts or something.
-Juli
A mint swap would be great! I have a big patch of a wonderful bright green spearmint, 'Kentucky Colonal', that is lovely in everything from iced tea to lamb-burgers. I also have a patch of what I thought was 'Chocolate Mint' (not a strong chocolate scent, more like an "Andes Candy"), and it still looks like chocolate mint (dark stems), but the flavor is stronger & less sweet right now that what I remember, possibly just because they are new spring shoots. And I don't know if this belongs in a mint swap, but I have some big clumps of catnip that could be divided into starts as well.
Juli, are you volunteering to host a mint swap? Should I pot up some starts, or would it be better to send them in moist paper towels & baggies if we do this?
Don't say host a swap or coop or anything without ok ing it with dave first. if it involves several folks you need to ok it with him first. new rules going around.
Darius, that mint is a wonderful mint, i've never in my life been able to over winter it, I have no idea why, it never comes back from a winter, that is one mint I don't have ,and don't plan on replacing cause it dies for me every winter. i've tried 3 or 4 times to overwinter it. I just love the scent though, so powerful for such a tiny plant
Darius, that's a lovely patch of Corsican Mint. It's one of my favorites, but like Kathy Ann I've been doing without it because I can't get it to overwinter.... do you have any hints for us? I've tried taking it inside the house as "groundcover" for a big pot, but that didn't work either. If we make it down to DeBaggio's this weekend, I'll probably pick up another pot.... hope springs eternal!
I knew there was discussion of new rules for coops, but didn't realize that applied to swaps as well. We're not talking about doing anything that would cost hundreds of dollars (or even $10) if it didn't work out. Then again, I've never hosted or participated in a swap, so I'm not really aware of any of the how to's! I just think a mint swap sounds like a really cool idea, especially since they are such tough plants that they should survive shipping (or even shipping, sorting, and then re-shipping) just fine.
I think they mentioned, anybody wanting to host anything LOL but swaps are diff, you talking about a plant robin or something like that?
or just doing some individual trading with several folks.
kathy
I added Iced Hazelnut Mint to my 2005 Fragrant Fields order.
The rest of the mints (listed in the 1st post) that I have are from 2004 and were small going into winter since I got them late so I doubt I will be able to trade unless these guys really take off.
Pray for me...I'm planting them in the ground. ;)

I just thought a mint swap sounded like fun too. I was hoping if I threw the idea out there somebody would host one. I'm hosting a robin now. I've participated in a veggie swap but I didn't host it. We all sent however many seed packets to the host along with a list of what we wanted but knowing that we might not get it and a SAE. The host in turn divided up the packets keeping in mind what everybody wanted. I know I was pleased with what I received and everybody else seemed happy with it.
I wasn't aware of new Dave rules so I will look at that forum. I'm sorry all, I only check that one every so often. I enjoy the rest of the site so much that I don't find the time to look there. But I will.
I'm not even certain what a "coop" is. I've participated in a swap and a few round robins and I've traded a few seeds directly with members.
-Juli
This is my first year trying to send any plants in the mail, plus I'm a new (albeit active) DG subscriber, so I should probably not offer to host a plant swap until I've done a few seed swaps etc. But I think a swap would work with mints, as the host could unpack them as they arrive and just hold them in water until they're packed up & sent out again. You'd probably get more variety in a swap, although a robin would also be fun. Juli, why don't you toss the idea out there in another thread, and maybe we can find somebody willing to host? I don't have any Jim Westerfield mints to offer, but I have 'KY Colonal' spearmint, chocolate mint, lemon balm, and catnip, and I'd be surprised if I didn't come back from DeBaggios with another variety or two....
I'm also a fairly new member but also an active member as of Jan 05. We could put up a thread but would it be in the round robin one or the plant trading one? We need someone who is really versed in mints to do this, how about it Kathy_ann ? Cottage_Rose ? Sherrylike????
-Juli(being pushy)
If we put up a thread to see if there's interest, I'm thinking it should be here or maybe in plant trading..... the actual thread formalizing/organizing it could go over to round robin forum.
Maybe we'll get a volunteer on this thread? Pleease?
Jill (also pushing :-)
Well, I certainly for one, don't need to get in on a round robin, as I don't think I could find a mint that I don't have. and I've nver been in on round robins, I don't like them. Sorry, you'll have to count me out of this one
I was thinking a swap would work better than a round robin, as you could be more sure of getting several things you didn't have (although there may not be any mint Kathy Ann doesn't have! LOL).... with a round robin, you run the risk of getting a box filled with common peppermint or just mints you already have. Also, I'm not sure even mints are tough enough to survive multiple transits in a robin, unless there's a different way to do a plant robin (I've only done seeds).
oh, ok, sorry bout that,
I just got my box from fragrantfields, everything looks great and healthy, I"m well pleased with it, now if I can get my son to dig some holes for me, nothing else would be more perfect LOL
oooooh!! which ones did you get, and how do you like the scents?? I was wondering if that 'Iced Hazelnut' had silvery coloration or anything ("iced?") in addition to being (?) nut scented....
It's always good to get a great report on a mail order nursery!
Good luck on the digging holes thing..... can you bribe him with cookies? digging for dollars?? I'm sure he's a sweet boy and would dig for no other reason than to make his mother smile.... :-)
LOL, I pay him very well, I'm going broke, but I don't like digging the holes so I don't mind paying him, he dug for me today, got a lot put in the ground, he was a sweety
oh yes, I have to go look at the list. they were out of the julie's wintergreen, of all things, I swear, they sent me sweet pear instead, and said they would refund if that wasn't good enough LOL I already had sweet pear so I asked for a refund, since I don't like substitutes, I dind't mind asking for a refund. LOL. I have to go to the greenhouse to see which ones I got. I know one of the ones I got fruit sorbet, I saw it planted outside already, so I know I had that one too. I'm really batting a l000 here.
i'll go check the greenhouse to see which ones I got
the hazelnut latte doesn't have a silver color to it just solid green the leaves are neat looking though.
Ok now ya'll have done it. I ordered the Iced Hazelnut and Jessie's Sweet Pear mint and another Stevia plant from Fragrantfields. I found a recipe on another website for the pear flavored mint. http://www.blossomfarm.com/plants_m.htm
[It really gives off an unmistakable hint of sweet, ripe pears. Make a light sweet tea with pear mint, or use the tea to simmer fruits, (apple, peaches, pears, etc.) until soft, let cool and marinate in the frig. for about an hour. If you eat one piece, you won't stop until there none left.]
It sounded so good I had to go and buy it, but I went back to Fragrantfields cuz they had the iced hazelnut.
I think I like the sound of the bannana mint also. Blossomfarm has that one.
-Juli
Sheran! Perhaps you are *just* the experienced swap person we were hoping for!! Pretty please??
I just got my order from Fragrant Fields and they all look nice n' healthy. :))
I got Iced Hazelnut, Chocolate and Marshmallow...and 2 "Arp" Rosemary. Suppose to be hardy to Z5-6. We shall see.
I messed my order up and ended up with two orders from Mulberry creek. I got two chocolate mints. My daughter(who loves peppermint patties) was very suprised when I had her eat a leave. Her eyes got really wide, Wow! It kinda tastes like the candy. The banana one isn't very banana-ey but maybe it needs a little more time. I also got a pear mint one and the iced hazelnut one. I read somewhere on another thread about somebody doing a lemon garden with all the lemon flavored herbs. That sounds like a neat idea.
-Juli
Picked up (locally) Orange and Pineapple Mints today for $2. each. :)
An all lemon garden does sound COOL!
I LOVE Lemon Thyme.
I love Lemon Verbena too.
I bought two nutmeg thyme and they died. I think I over watered them.
-Juli
Hi , my name is Yvonne and i'm from Wyoming. I'm fairly new to Dave's Garden. I've participated in a few coops and enjoyed reading the forums. Has anyone ever heard of pina colada mint? I was told there was one but haven't seen any yet. I'm in a pretty rural area. No big nurseries here. I have chocolate mint and lemon mint and apple. They're all new this year. I haven't planted them outside yet. All these mints sound fascinating. I know a lady who might do a JW mint coop but it wont be til later in June. Watch for it. Yvonne
