I need to replace parts of my fenced yard. It is chainlink now. I have it up for the dog. It goes along part of my seawall so I don't want anything solid, but something you can see through...both for me and the dog! Does anyone have any ideas what I could use that is not so....welll....so...chain-linky? LOL Just something more attractive. Thanks for your ideas!
Chain link fence alternative?
What material do you want: wood, vinyl or metal? What about a picket fence with widely-spaced pickets? This is assuming your dog can't fit through, because that would kind of defeat the purpose - though at least you could see him as he ran away!
LOL I am thinking I should go look at some of that. I am not at all sure how high she can jump...Cardigan Welsh Corgi...the Corgi with a tail. Her shoulders are to wide I believe to get through.
What about wooden pallets that have boards both top and bottom(they would become front and back of the fence) and then paint them. Welded wire comes in several sizes of openings and heights. Some of the welded wire is even covered with green or white vinyl coating. I don't think Corgis are good jumpers or even diggers.
Hmm... I bet they are diggers -- weren't most of those terriers originally bred as ratters (i.e. root out rats and other vermin)?
However, YOUR Corgi may not be a digger. if chainlink is doing the job now, the coated welded wire idea seems a good idea -- go for dark green, brown, even black -- but not white if you want it to be unobstrucive and to look through it, for white 'stops' the eye.
~'spin!~
I think wood is a good idea. How handy are you and what do you want to spend? The pallets idea was fine but you might think it looks a bit Spartan. Making a picket fence 30" high out of dismembered pallets and some 2" square pieces of wood for the spacer (or all new wood, for that matter) isn't that difficult (make sure you drill holes in the wood before screwing the pickets to the spacer). I don't think a corgi would jump over a 30" picket fence... That way you can space your pickets at just the right distance to prevent corgi access. (I will gladly provide advice as to how to dismember pallets with minimal damage to the wood, if required).
If you want to buy in something, then it seems to me that what you want is something tlike this... http://www.gardeners.com/Shopping/sell.asp?ProdGroupID=16083&DeptPGID=18244&lstCategory=18503&RecGroupNum=1
only taller... and you can grow nice scrambling plants up it...
Haven't really had the time to find a supplier....

How about a picture of your Corgi on the Pet Forum? I love Corgis (with and without tail) and always longed to own one.I don't think they would be diggers as they were bred for herding dogs, heel nippers. In fact they are the smallest of the herding dogs.

I've seen some of the whole pallet fences, Mike. Painted they really aren't unattractive. I've even seen one with the U.S. flag painted into the design. One could do all kinds of designs with the boards.
Patti, you are right about the Corgi's being herding dogs. Our neighbors have and breed them and I've never heard her mention them digging or climbing. We have a supposed Corgi/Blue Heeler mix and she certainly doesn't climb anything but onto your lap, chairs, and Shadoe's bed when he is here. I've never seen any evidence at all of her digging.
crystalspin,
That is interesting about not using white as it stops the eye. That makes total sence. I had to go out and look at my fence that I sprayed white and you are absolutley correct.
I never thought about it before. Green lets the eye go beyond the white. I may have to make some changes.
Ah ha! I had totally forgotten about chainlink now coming with coatings. Green or black would blen in quite well...white you would just accentuate the fence which I am trying to do! I've thought and thought how a picket type fence could be done, but in order to keep a view, the pickets would have to be awfully narrow. Pallets as a fence.....I use them for firewood! Would have to see a picture. I am very handy (for a "girl") and built my fence out front, combining three pictures of different fences and it came out quite well, but it is for privacy really or better delineating the yard and the courtyard. My Corgi isn't into jumping or digging, just chasing boats as they go by. She's never too far away from me for any length of time. I am going to go and get some samples of the coated fencing...I think black would disappear the best. It has to be something relatively substantial. Thanks so much for the ideas! I have a lot to think about!
Here is Buttons.....
Dark coated wire fencing 'virtually' disappears in front of your eyes. Is true.
Dalep6, I just fell in love...again. Buttons is a beauty!
