Where do I start?????

Shirley - boy is my age showing, I did say rabbits didn't I - meant squirrels - boy would that be a picture if it were rabbits!! I think Phil found out about the pro-mix and went and got some - if not I will tell him - thanks - that is all he will use - good stuff. Air rifle uh? Does that keep them away?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Yes....for about a half a day, then they are back. As for the squirrels, I just let them plant away and in the spring I have lots of oak trees in my pots.

After hearing the storm stories, I have a question. Do you think it would help to stake the brugs with rebar at the time they are planted?? We used to have occasional wind storms, but this year we've had wind all spring and summer. Or, does the rebar just keep the plant from breaking off below the rebar?? This spring was so windy that if the rebar helps, I'd like to start getting it out now. TIA!!

It probably would help the main stalk, but I don't think I'm going to do that for over 150 brugs. I'll just take my chances. I have several stakes holding the pots down....yeah, right!! Short of digging the pots into the ground, I don't know of anything else I could do here. Monika stakes and makes slings for the branches. Boy now, that is dedication. I will just lose some branches from time to time. LOL! Back to your question about the rebar....It will only protect up the last point the brug was tied to it.

That's what I thought, Shirley, and thanks!!! Since I only have, say, under 40, and many are small, I may consider the rebar, since all of mine are in the ground. And, I'm most concerned about them next spring when they are tender. Since I'm home 24/7, with my daddy, it might be a nice project, and certainly not as back breaking as digging holes, whew! I'm so glad I'm finished digging, except for 4 seedlings and they aren't large. I planned to be at this stage by the 4th of July - well, I'm 'only' about 6 weeks behind...

Brugie,
I just realized that you got hit twice this month with rotten weather. That's such a shame. We haven't had much come this way (we're about 4 hours east of Des Moines) so the storms must just be hovering over Iowa or something. Hope you have smooth sailing from here on out.

Eileen, just north of Des Moines, they are having some horrible storms right now. Very high winds....trees down....etc. So far, we have not been hit tonight, but the winds are a little higher than I would like. I hope you don't get any of this bad stuff.

Shirley,
after reading about your storm damage, I pounded stakes into the ground next to my potted plants and used old nylons to secure the trunks of my most special brugs. Hope the storms blow past all of us (and take this humidity with them).

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I just checked your weather and it looks like you are going to have storms late tonight and through tomorrow. Sure glad you had time to take precautions.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5a)

Shirley,we just got 1 3/4 inches of rain in 45 minutes with sideways winds from the NW.unfortunately not enough of an angle to straighten the ones it bent yesterday.worse thing is it looked like it was going your way again.
not to much new damage here.same ones are rolling down the hill.can't tell if the boat is still there.i may wind up taking an early morning swim.at least the water is warm.hope you escaped further havoc.if you need anything,Linda is taking tomorrow off and says she will gladly help you .

Thanks Phil. We got rain, but that is about it. Everything looks pretty good.
