I sure hope to get some insight on this! I recently moved to an area where the water is extremely hard. I've been gardening for 30+ years & have never had so many problems losing plants. It seems that ferns especially, but other plants just melt away! The only thing that I can attribute it to is the high pH. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Hard Water
I guess my first question is: Have you tested your soil yet? Do know what the pH value is? The next thing I'd probably recommend is having your water tested (or doing it yourself). Knowing that information would be a start in determining where you stand and where you should go next.

I've had the same problem Mo. The water here is just horrible. Especially with ferns, like you said. There is always a white residue on the pots and top of the soil from the water and the plants definitely do not like it! There was a thread about this a while back, let me find it.
Here it is, http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/423921/
And apparently then I thought the water was soft...but now I'm not so sure. Either way, its still a problem!
