Would you go dig these up for almost free?

Marietta, GA(Zone 7b)

I just got back from a demolition sale today and the woman was selling all the professionally landscaped bushes out front including the Nathaniel hawthorn bushes (About 10-15) at 3 feet each, and two 12 feet crytomeria (I think it’s that- not a leyand cypress) on either side of the front door. (A few firepower nandia's too) She wanted $3 a bush and the crytomeria. I think she would negociate a package deal, and it’s all I can think about. I don’t have a clue what I am getting into with digging up the crytomeria. If it’s going to be an all day job or couple of hours- would you go get it? I have a truck and a tarp to cover them with. She will be there tomorrow if the plants are still there. Your experience please?

I have been on a plant resque in the middle of July, so I know how hot it can get out there right now....

What would you do?

Whoops- that would be INDIAN HAWTHORN- Not Nathaniel???? I just made that up I think??

:)

What choice do you have? If you don't save them the bulldozer will destroy them. I say "Go for it!"

How long have they had to establish roots? Thay would be my chief concern.

If they are in clay soil it might be very hard digging to get them. Sandy soil is a different matter. For plants that size you need to dig a sizable rootball. I am glad it is you and not me. :~)

Never hollar whoa in a hard place the only thing you have to lose is a few bucks and a little labor. The transplants will appreciate a generous application of B-1 or another shock reducing root simulate some shade even if from artifical means continued applications of B-1 and faithfull watering helped out by a nice layer of mulch. Good luck Ernie

Susan, do you have a place to put all of these, or are you just going to get them because they are a bargain? I've done that before and now that I am "older", realize that is just plain silly.

I don't know about Georgia, but here in Washington State right now it is over 90 degrees and doing something like that could be stroke or heart attack time.

Think about it, Jeanette

Hi Jeanette, we just had a record low for the month of August-- 50 degrees yesterday morning. The sky is very overcast today and it feels slightly cool. My husband isn't really excited about the idea, and maybe he's right. I do not have a place ready for them once I get home. I do have plenty of room, it's just not ammended and ready to plant. I get really excited about plants and probably don't have a clue as to what I'm getting into- but I will still think about those plants and who knows, I may still go get them ..... :)

Ernie, Thanks for info about the B-1- didn't know about it :)

Go for it Susan, and do as ernie said.......they won't mind sitting in buckets for a couple of days in the shade!!

Susan, Ernie is right. B-1 is very good to reduce shock. Let us know what you end up doing and how the plants do.

I am amazed at your weather. Even with the storms down there that seems low. Jeanette

Jnette, My husband totally talked my out of it and promised to buy me all the indian hawthorne I want at the nursery :) I guess he figured he would have been the one to end up digging all day and he's tired of all my projects for now anyway. I'm glad to know about the B-1. :)

Thanks everybody

Susan, I am glad you are going to get the plants you want at the nursery. They will have a better chance to grow and you will have more time to think about where you want them.

AND I know your husband will be happier. Good Luck

Susan go to wholesale pikes on South Cobb Drive, the prices are great and you can get what you want. Or call me and I can get them for you....

You rock ED! I have a swipe card discount for the Home Depot Garden Landscape Center. However, they tier their discounts into three different levels and I'm on the bottom rung :(

I have a card for Landscape Supply, there are 3 diff locations for them, decent prices, not the best, but either place works. ANYTIME Susan, good luck with the Natures Helper, I would spread 1 bag of Naturs Helper to 2 bags of Mushroom, remember CLAY is good, not bad, especially tilled up.....have fun

Ed
