I actually haven't been on the computer very much, cause I've been glued to the t.v. this week watching the Olympics! To say that they have been phenomenal, would be a mild understatement. Such incredible athletes from countries all over the world!
I would be remiss if I didn't mention swimming sensation, Michael Phelps from Towson, MD. The entire State of Maryland is bursting with pride over his swimming accomplishments, breaking world records, five gold medals to date, all from a young man who is only 19 yrs. old!!! WAY TO GO, MICHAEL!!!
OLYMPICS
For the very first time in history Chile has obtained Olympic Gold, and not one gold medal, but two. I have no words to describe how proud we are as a country for our tennis players. The whole country seems to be on the streets celebrating. It's such a good feeling....
Viva Nicolás Massu!!!!!!!!
Viva Fernando González!!!!!!!!
Can you believe the class that Michael Phelps has - to bow out of the last event so that his teammate could swim and win the Gold? What a class act! I know that Michael will also get a medal, but won't be on the platform to receive his. And today, when USA got the Bronze in the marathon. She was crying all over the place as she was finishing. So did I, just seeing her. I love the Olympics. That's the basis for my DG name - I have collected Olympic pins since 1994 and, since my name is Italian, the 2006 stands for the winter games in Turino in 2006.

The one thing that is marring these olympics, and past ones too is the doping situation. I just wish that the athletes would have respect for the games, their fellow athletes. One Turkish gal was found to have been on something, she had won a gold in weightlifting, then had to give it up. I just read this moorning that a Ukrainian shot putter (who I watched yesterday) was found to have been on something.what a disgrace to the country they represent, and what a disrespect to the other athletes. I wish there was a way to make sure that they cannot participate. The two greek athletes who refused to be tested, simpy bowed out of the games, well....there is something to be said for that.
I'm not really able to watch much of the olympics, but when I do, I'm not enjoying it as much, cause it is all slanted about the turks.....I want to know more about the Americans.
speaking of which, I watched a 200m women's race where the american gal blew it somehow, didnt start running, what happend there? of course I didnt see any follow up here.....
Pebble- are they reporting that the Greek couple simply bowed out? it is being reported here much differently.
pebble are you thinking about Devers in the 100m hurdles? She was injured a while ago it held out thru the preliminarys but just could not run again tried to stop but slid under the 1st hurdle. Here is the full story http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5788395/
Daisy,
The way I understood it, the greeks failed to show up at the last minute for the drug test and were dis-qualified. Correct me if I am wrong.....nada
No- that is what I saw too and the other night they said his motor cycle accident was suspicious because there were no witnesses.
Pebble said that "The two greek athletes who refused to be tested, simpy bowed out of the games". I am always fascinated by the reporting in different countries and I wondered if she had heard, being in Turkey, something which we had not.
Well, what I heard is that they bowed out under a cloud of suspicion...
Old Rose, no it wasnt the hurdles, I didnt read your article yet, it was like a 200 meter race, and they were all lined up, they had two practice starts, then on the third they were set to go. the gun went off, everyone lunged forward, the american didnt react, (we saw it in slow motion a thousand times and different angles) then she turned around with her arms up in the air as if saying what the heck, and then I think she ended up walking the race, then they showed her going to the officials, I dont know the full story though.
I should look it up and see if I can find anything
I have not gotten to watch many events this year due to a weird work schedule but even though I always intend to rout for the USA team I get so wrapped up in each atheletes performance that I forget where they are from and cheer them all.
The medals for Chile were well deserved. They did great!
It is a shame the gymnastic judges kept playing politics but the atheletes were amazing to watch!
It breaks my heart when anyone falls or makes too big of a splash or steps out of bounds. They live for these moments and I cannot imagine what they must feel when they trip up something that looks perfect to me.
You would make a good judge. Give them all a 10.0 just for qualifying. I would do the same. I just heard on the news that Greece will have a 3.5 BILLION dollar deficit when the games are over. Even if all the tickets were sold, they still would not have broken even. Hopefully, they can recover some with the new tourist trade. TV coverage has been real good even though it really screwed up my sleeping habits.
I heard that the debt for them putting on the Olympics is over a thousand dollars for every man, woman and child in Greece. It is a shame that it is poorly attended this time and I really think the Iraq war is a big factor in that. What a joy it would be to go see the Olympics in Greece though. Such a great legacy especially if the politics were left out of the mix.
I cheer for them all too and I sure hate to see anyone fall or fail in their pursuit of the competition and I think it is wonderful to even watch the last person come in to the finish of their chosen sport. Just to be an Olympian is such an honor that most humans will never have.
Sweet...
