Due to decisions out of my control, I have found myself in the position of having to make some major changes. My s/o of 5 years is buying my share of our home and I will be moving on. I want to take my gardens with me. I have so many plants that I have received in trade and from the TNRU and I can't bear to leave them here. They will just die of neglect.
I will have to make this move within the next 3-4 weeks. I have found a place with a huge back yard with so many possibilities. I cannot choose the season for this change. It's here, now. I have ferns, hostas, Jacobs Ladders, Alocasia, Colocasia, alternatheras, coleus, hoyas, taccas, sedums, succulents, cactus, herbs, cannas, daylilies, liliums, ground orchids, nun's Orchids, passies, mandevillas, alamanda, honeysuckle, vine roses, columbines, agastache, dahlias, blanket flowers, dianthus, fountain grass, angels and devils trumpets, clerodendrums, just to name a few. I also have 2 water features with plants and fish, a couple bird baths, 2 trellis benches and so much more.
If I move these, what do you think their chances are for survival of the move? Taking what I can is the only way I can bear making these changes.
Does anyone down here in my area have some free time and the energy to lend advice/hand? ( A little bribery, I have plants to share.)
Any other advice is surely appreciated.
Molly
Changes
Oh, Molly, I am so sorry to hear that you are having to make this change just because it can be so wrenching, above and beyond the heartache of re-locating a garden.
Wish that I lived closer because I would help you in a second.
Hi Molly, I'm sorry you're going through this painful experience. I've been there. I know that the plants I moved and put into a forced dormancy survived great. The ones that I tried to transplant off-season, didn't. I just pruned them back severely and healed them into 5 gallon black pots and stuck them in the cool shade with minimum water for a while. Once the fall came I was able to plant them in the ground with great results. Though we're on opposite coasts, the zone's the same, so I'd think they'd do fine. I was also breeding goldfish at that time and the poor dears sloshed around in a 20 gallon plexiglas photography tank on the front passenger seat floor for 8 straight hours. They survived fine with a little babying. There were six budgies and one very upset lovebird on the passenger seat too. Most stressful trip I've ever taken, by far. I think vitamin B for shock would be good for the plants. Wow, what an undertaking at this time of year. I'm sure someone with more precise instructions will jump in and help. I'd say I'd come help, I've been wishing to come to Florida (Sanibel/Pine Islands specifically) but Charley's a bit intimidating tonight.
Thank you Stella and Daisy, some days are up and some are down and some are both. Today both. I found a lovely little house with extra living space in it, very clean, a great fenced in back yard for the gardens and my doggies. There is a separate structure in the back yard that has air conditioning, what a great potting shed!(9'X14') Also will be good for doing the boxing up for sales and trades. The owner will let me move my plants into the back yard in their temporary pots until I move in on the 1st of Sept. There is underground sprinklers on a well with a timer. This is in a neighborhood I used to live in so is somewhat familiar.
I was feeling a bit up because I had some purpose today, this evening a bit down. Tomorrow, I have to work, will do better, day by day.

Hang in there Molly - you're doing great. Been there and done that! When I felt really down, I always think that this time tomorrow, it won't be so bad and you know what, it wasn't. Take care of yourself.
Molly, I like the sound of your new place. I hope you can get the doggies and plants moved in without too much stress. I am praying for you, Dear. It will get better a little at the time as you well know. Email or call me if you need someone to talk to. I will always be here for you. Give those sweet doggies a hug for me, ok?
Molly, I have no words, just Hugs.
Molly, I wish I lived closer so I could at least help you with the use of my horse trailer and truck for your move and a few hugs. The house you have found sounds pretty darn good considering you have the dogs too. Most of your plants should do fine as long as the sprinkler system gives them water daily. When we moved in the middle of summer we didn't lose much from our flower beds.
I know you will do well in your new home and that in time the pain of the split will ease. For now you have my sympathy and hugs from a distance.

((((((((Molly))))))))
Bless your heart!! Most of the plants should be fine - just keep them watered. My Mom always said water a new planting for 8 days straight and it will have a better chance of making it. I have found this to be good advice.
Brenda
Molly, take a deep breath and jump into your new life! If I didn't have to work, I would be there to help you. Stella's advice sounds good cause our weather is so brutally hot right now the plants might need a while before being put in the ground. Your new place sounds great and the best part to me would be the watering system!
Good luck and keep us posted on your new adventure.
Molly....I am sorry to read of your troubles....but when I see you at the KY RU I will give you all kinds of (((((Hugs)))). Hang in there! Jo
I don't think she will be coming to Roundup, Jo. I am just sick aobut that. Maybe she can work it out by then though.
Maybe I can work it out Elena and Jo, as Weeds said, this is a new adventure. I go tomorrow to sign the lease on the house, my db, sil and nephew will come down from Orlando to help me move by 9/1. In the middle of all that time I will pot up all the plants I want to take with me and let them get settled in the backyard. ( Stella, I will keep them in pots til the weather cools a bit.) The landlord said it's okay to get my plants moved first. The irrigation system is on a timer so they will do well.
Once I get all this settled, I can put some more thought into taking a little trip. It would be a nice birthday present to myself and maybe my sis will still be able to rendevous with me there. I need to start thinking of the future and not dwell on the past.
It heartens me to hear all your words of encouragement and kind thoughts. Thanks so much, everyone.
Molly
Yay Rah!!!!! You sound like you are really getting things pulled together well and I am so glad. I have really been worried about you, gal. If you can still get to Roundup, that would be positively marvelous! I am praying for you. You have such sweet and laid back doggies, they should make the move just fine.
Love ya, Elena
Hugs to you-wish I could help- Would giving things a heavy water soon , help the hold-over period?
Maybe a local garden group to trade a bit of work for a few plants?
Sending good energy your way
Molly, Sorry about what you are having to go thu. chin up. The House sounds wonderful. you should try and go to the roundup. you deserve a vac. my prayers are with you and every thing goes fine! Maybe when you have the time post some pictures of the new place. we would all love to see it!! Mary (binky) :)))))))
We're here for you even if only in spirit. (((((MollyMc)))))
Molly, I just now found this thread. I know that things might be tough for a while, but it sounds like you have a plan and will make a new life for yourself. Most of the plants that you will be moving will do fine - - and other round ups and trading will give you an opportunity to pick up other new ones.
Take care.....(((Molly))), Nat
I wish I was closer - I would gladly help out getting your plants together & moved! It's too bad that you cannot count on the plants being cared for if they were left there... I am sure you have done a nice job of plantscaping. Things will be better once you are settled in at your new place. Being in limbo is tough to deal with. This is a great chance to design a new garden at your new place! Again, I wish I could help - I am sure many others here at DG feel the same way. Keep us posted, keep the faith, & hang in there!
you have my # if you need me!!!
Thank you so much everyone. I have never felt so care about. Everytime I come here, it gives me the boost I need.
Marcia, I start moving plants tomorrow and they will need to stay in their pots for a week or so. I have a house to paint the week of 9/6, but after that I'm off for 3 weeks and can get the garden set in.
Julie, you are right, this will give me the time and opportunity to design a new garden. With the plants in the pots I can shift and move and readjust before I plant, especially now that I have learned a lot about each one and where they like to be.
Mary I will take pictures starting tomorrow when I take the first van load of plants over and I will post them.
Nat, thank you, I look forward to seeing you again in Oct.
Dori, I have your number. It's is so nice to have such a great support group.
I wish I could come see you all on my trip.
I work on Saturday's at the paint store I buy my supplies from for my work. They gave me 4 gallons of paint as a house warming gift to paint the rooms in my new place. So I will be having a "bus man's holiday" come Wednesday and Thursday.
(((Hugs to all)))) Will be back tomorrow with pics.
:^)
Molly
Wish there was more of us closer to you. But remember that we are all there in spirit. Look forward to the pictures. and will pray for all to go well for you. Remember keep your chin up!! Mary :))))))
Sounds like you are getting it all worked out. It will be so much fun for you getting your new house and gardens fixed JUST EXACTLY like you want them. I am delighted for you. Don't work too hard though cause you have got to save enough energy to have fun at Roundup. I can't wait to see pictures.
Sorry, it took me so long to get pictures done. Been really busy.
I've been moving the small stuff by the van load all week. Did the painting and really stepped out in color in a couple of the rooms. The container load of furniture was transferred from one house to the other today, then had to run to the mechanic to get a new starter. They never have a slow day, but today I got lucky.
Here's the front of the house. It's small, but just right for 2 dogs, 3 parrots and myself. And, it has a great front and back yard for my plants.
ooooOOOOOOOOooooo You can picture the possibilities just lookin at it.
Looks just fine, Molly. Show us the back yard... future garden!
Molly, I bet you will fill that front yard with plants in no time! And it's great that it has a fenced area for the dogs(Snowy and Baby?). Be sure to keep before and after shots, and post them as you go.
It looks like it has lots of gardening potential. I would rather have a clean slate to start with, than to have to rip out a bunch of stuff. Enjoy!! Nat
You two are lightning fast, I just posted that. Okay, Here's the backyard. On the left is the separate building with A/C and electric. There are built in storage shelfs in there for storing anything I don't have inmmediate use of, paint tools and supplies, plus there is a workbench for packaging trades and sales up on. Lot's of floorspace for my treadmill and the landlords weight machine. (I get to use it) I think he said that room was 16X20.
On the right is a mango tree. I'm thankful the season is over I hate mangos. When they come back into season people will come by and pay me to let them pick them up. Hehe
Molly, what kind of mango? I adore them so you'd better save some to send to me! Store-bought ones are awful.
That is a great house, Molly! Happy happy for you! Love that 'Florida Room'!
But that is 3 parrots and a cockasomething, Molly.
It really looks nice inside -- bright and clean!!
And finally just a little better picture of the florida room. There are windows on 3 & 1/2 walls. I think I will be putting up those roll up bamboo/reed blinds in most of the house.
Darius, I have no idea what kind of mangos, (they all stink when they rot on the ground lol) But you are welcome to as many as you like.
Nat, I know what you mean, a clean slate to work with. My sis will be down Thursday, she's gonna get her hands dirty helping me. I hope to get everything I move planted while she is here. She may never want to do any gardening again.
Daisy,
15 years ago, those were the birds I had, 2 cockatiels, 1 cackatoo and Smoke, the African Grey. I still have Smoke and 2 other breeds.
I hired that portrait to be done. Kept the starving artist in food.
Molly, as long as they are not the little "turpentine" mangoes which are both small, AND stringy, I will buy some and pay postage next year!
