I am expecting a new grandchild in less than 2 weeks. My daughter (in-law and heart) just called after her prenatal checkup and said if the baby does not come by the 26th they will induce labor because the baby is so large. She is saying they told her that the baby is 27 inches long ! A 23 inch baby is a tall skinny thing and I don't think I have ever even heard of a baby over that size. So what do you think? Bad info from the Dr., she misunderstood or we are about to have giant on our hands?
Big baby or an error/misunderstanding?
Zany-
It can't be right otherwise they would induce before the 26th- the baby could grow another several inches in 2 weeks.
Can you call the doctor yourself for clarification?
Hope all goes well- be thinking about ya'll, ZanyGranny! ; )
My son was 22" long and looked like a string bean but 27???? WOW
And you might have to change your name to zanny....zannygranny
I am labor & delivery nurse. Granted, my rural hospital only has approx 360 deliveries per year, but in 7 years I have never seen a 27 inch baby. The largest was 24 inches and it was something like 13.5 pounds as well. Anyway, ultrasound technicians take measurements that estimate the weight and/or the gestational age, not the head-to-heel length, and oftentimes they are off by a pound or a week despite their best guesses.
Please let us know the outcome. I'm sure that the baby is probably large if they are talking induction. Hope everything goes well!

The baby is large and they told her that if there is any trouble at all in the delivery she needs to be prepared for an emergency C-section. But 27 inches has got to be a mistake! I sure hope they are correct about it being a girl though! Tucker needs a sister and Granny needs a new little girl to buy pretty clothes for. (My oldest grandchild is a girl but we decided that she is "broken" now that she is 16 and too mature to want to play with Grandma)
My SIL gets induced early because otherwise she would deliver 10 pounders. She just got induced again 2 weeks early and the baby was only 7.11 and now down to 6.12. The sonograms are good but not perfect. They generally pick a few bones to measure and get their guesstimates from that. I too think if the baby was that big, they'd be getting it out already. A baby under 2' is miserable enough to carry. I sure wouldn't want to see one over! LOL I always pray for LONG skinny ones, but I think 27 inches is pushing it.
Ouch, the kicking would be terrible and the stretching, ouch.
I cant see a 27 inch baby, not saying its impossible but I too think that if the baby was that big already, then they would be wanting to get that baby out now, two weeks is nothing anymore so no worries about it being a preemie.
grandmaw zanny: if this is so..and the baby is 27 inches, I think you should teach the baby these first words: BASKET BALL PLAYER.
LOL, Lisa!!!
When I had my daughter (she was 2 lbs.- long ago and forgotten as she is a big ol' 11 yr old now) and there was a baby born the same day who weighed 13.5 lbs and I remember going to look at this baby and thinking that it was a monster compared to my pretty little delicate Rosebud!! The hands on this boy were as big as mine and could easily palm a basketball.
Moral is: however big, this baby will be loved and wonderful!!! And she will be a supermodel in GrannyZany's eyes!
If she is 27 inches at birth, by the time she turns a year old I would have to stand on a chair to look her in the eyes! I called my daughter in law back and asked her if she was absolutely certain they said 27 inches. She said yes. That they repeated it several times. So she asked them to email the info to her very worried Mother-in-law. Sure enough, there it was in black and white 20.7 inches LOL I guess they for got to say point .07 But they are saying it looks to be a 9-10 pounder. That we can handle! Tucker was a big baby too and the Dr's were amazed at how easy his birth was for this tiny little gal.
Whew! 20 point 7 sounds a whole lot better than 27! :D
LOL, Zany!!! What a funny story. She will be a wonder no matter how tall.
If the baby truly was 27 inches long I think it would have made the guiness book of records! The more I thought about it the more it made me nervous. I about rolled on the floor laughing when I got the email. What a relief.
We are going over on the 24th and it ought to be a great time for this Grandmother and Grandfather too. My daughter is going to meet us there and I will get to hold Andrew for the first time since he was born last November. Tucker and Justin are both talking up a storm now so they will be a blast to play with And Joey looks so big in his last pictures that I think he may be taller than me now. I know my 16 year old Marisa is already taller than me. So there will be 6 of my babies there all at once to hug and hold plus their mommies and daddies of course.
I only have a 64 MB memory for my camera but am taking the laptop to download into. I know I will take at least a thousand pictures while we are all there :~) I wish my folks were up to making the drive with us but they aren't. They are doing well enough that we can be out of town a few days so I'll count that as a blessing and bring them lots of pictures back.
Your camera do little video clips? That'd be neat for your folks to see. :)
Yes, we will be doing the short clips for them. Sure wish I had bought the video camera when we had the funds though :~( But with the new car payments it is definately out of the budget now!
ROFLMBO 20.7 sounds much more comfy for both mother and baby.
How funny. Reports are only as good as the person reading them. My DIL went several time for ultra sound with our about to be two year old "GRAND"baby. She was told all 4 times she was having a boy. We had a blue shower, beautiful cake and lots of pictures. The day before her c-section as she had an emergency c-section with our angel who will be 4, the dr. preformed the ultra sound. His remark was wow that is definitly a boy. Well to alls surprise my DIL gave birth to Destiny Nicole. And what a joy she is. So that dr did not see the WOW he thought he saw. I have to add I love my angels. They are GRAND aren't they? Make sure we get to see pictures and plenty of they grandma zany
Well, Zany, a week later.....how are things growing? :)
HUGE! We leave in the morning :~) The baby has dropped and she is starting to dialate. I have to work tonight so I told her to suck it in til we get there. But the chance is good she will have it before we arrive. My son made it home from PA in time so if she does go early she won't be alone.
See ya all when we get back with pictures to spare!
Oh Boy (or girl) it's BABY time!!!!!!!
Good Luck to all of you!!!!!!
sue
Can't wait for the good news Zany! Hey don't kill yourself trying to get there. Unless she is more than 3cm and really thinned, or on number six (LOL), you should have plenty of time. Waiting for pics. :)
Cant wait for the pics, give them hugs for congrats please.
