Dave, am I missing something? I don't see a Search box on the home page. Yes, I can go to Forums and find one but it's an extra step.
No Search on Home Page
I think the thing is this, the home page is the home of the forums, the PDB, the GWD, the BW . . . the question would be which search should be on the home page. so . . . no search on the home page.
I think . . .
Cheri'
Nah, I think I should be able to access everything from my home page.
Well, that would be nice, but I think Dave did away with "search the entire DG universe" a long time ago (that's a lot of data for a search to trod through.)
For quite a while, the searches have been focused on a particular area, whether it's your journal, the tradelists, the PDB, forums, etc.
Terry, then waht's the difference in the Search box on the full forum page that would be different if it was also on the Home Page?
I am just one person, but for me the search function would be much handier on my home page than on the forum page. Since I have the forums I'm interested in on my home page, I rarely go to the forum page.
Thanks for theinput Brugie. Glad to know I'm not alone.
I know this new site will take a LOT of tweaking but if we don't ask, Dave may not implement it.
well, I wonder if the various searches could be put into modules that we each could choose to have on the home page . . .
This way, those who visit DG mainly for the PDB could have the PDB search on their home page. Same for the other sections . . .
Poor Dave, he hasn't got enough to do . . .

edited for typos!

LOL, Sundry, Too bad he has so much idle time!
darius, you are not alone. Since the 'Search' feature gives us the option of choosing, or limiting to, where and what to search, the reason for not being on the Home page must be something else.
One of the major "mind shifts" the new format requires is to think of your homepage as a true "portal" into all of DG.
I, for one, RARELY used the forum tab in the old DG. Instead, I loaded up my "favorite forums" with all but a handful of the forums, and relied exclusively on the homepage to navigate. With the new tabbed format, the forums now have their own place of prominence, right alongside the PDB, GWD, GBW, etc.
Now I've scaled back my "favorite forums" to include my TRUE favorites (around 20 forums) and find myself using the forums tab more each day.
I guess what I'm saying is let's all give ourselves some time to adapt to the new site before asking Dave to re-create things the way they used to be (change is part and parcel of a major upgrade ;o)

Not to butt in on this after taking being asked to take a deep breath........but if I don't say it now I'll forget to later.
If the Home page is going to be our HOME page then why not allow me to add "PDB Search" and "GW Search" and "GBW Search" and "Forum Search" to my customizable options? We have the "Custom Menu" that allows me to have My Journal search and My Tradelist search in the Column 2, Position 1 location of my personal "langbr's Home page". To be honest I believe most of our membership uses the forums and PDB far more than the Journal and Trade List and those are probably more relevant searches to be on the Home page (although PLEASE don't do away with Journal/Tradelist I've got those in my top-right corner!)
Another thought......how many major websites do you see that don't have a site-wide search capability on their "home" page?
I return you now to your regularly scheduled programming.......
Brenda, well put.
Custom search boxes is a good idea and will be implemented. It makes good sense for the homepage.
dave
Thanks, Dave!
The feature is finished. Go to your Preferences, and then Custom Menu. Check off all the searches you want (they are all there).
If it doesn't show up then on your homepage, that means you haven't enabled the custom menu. Go to Preferences/Home Tab and enable it.
dave
Once again.....this is the coolest, most responsive site I've been on EVER!
Dave, I enabled it, hit submit, and after that went to Home Tabs... doesn't show. What did I do wrong?
Did you check off the search boxes you want to include here? http://davesgarden.com/prefs/menu.php
Yes, Terry, I did, before hitting submit. I just now checked again and the 2 I wanted are still checked.
And did you then choose a location for this custom box to appear: http://davesgarden.com/prefs/home.php (If the custom box is marked "disabled" it won't appear.)
Darius, it wasn't marked to appear on your Home tab. I fixed it for you so you should now be all set.
dave
Dave, you ARE the man. This is very very cool. Thanx!
Cheri'
Thanks, Dave. I guess I didn't connect 'custom box' with 'search'
Thank you, dave. This is great!
Dave, you are the best! Between adding zones to the PDB comments and this - all so quickly - you are the man!
One thing though... My tradelist search box is not showing up now. I went in and checked Forum and PDB search (Tradelist was already checked) and Forum & PDB only show now. All three are checked.
Thanks for the report; this is fixed!
dave
Hi Dave!
Still exploring this Bravo New World - but ran into this problem while trying to update my modules (I know, I know - maybe one percent of the people here use Safari, so I don't expect you to drop everything to address it - still, that bit about "(null)" sounded all Linuxy, so I thought you might be interested - from an academic standpoint... ;)
Lophophora, I'm using Safari 1.0.2 and it works fine for me.
Baa is using Safari too and has reported no prob;ems, and she was one of the beta testers for this new format.
Thanks darius!
Actually, I just went back to play with it some more (assuming, as usual, that the fault lies not in the stars etc. etc.) and found that despite the error messages, my modules were in fact updated! Hmm... so I tried it again, and still got the same error message...
Dave - is this one of your subtle practical jokes (cf. "Left Coast"), this time for us Mac dweebs, or is it, like, you know dude, like me heterodyning some sorta weird space-alien organic crystal energy into this like totally rad new design???
;)
Lophophora, I haven't been ignoring you, I just don't know what the problem is. I mean, it's a straight HTML form with no funny business going on. Safari frustrates me to no end and I got sick of doing backflips trying to get that one browser to work. Apple needs to get with the program and fix that browser. Firefox is available for Mac. :)
The "Left Coast", "Tornado Alley", "Soon to be Gulf of Mexico" and other fun regional names were actually originally intended to be internal names only (I needed names for the regions and my personality called for fun ones). The new redesign required that all pages are named so they are now shown much more visibly. It's still fun, no? :)
dave
Dave, I'd switch to Firefox if I could fugure out how to save/import my very numerous bookmarks.
Greetings Captain - wasn't feeling ignored at all - no worries! ;)
And please don't fret about the Safari bug - like I said, it works anyway, so absolutely no prob. Thanks for looking into it!
And I agree that Apple needs to do a lot of things... but when I try to make a list, I get an alert saying "EXC_BAD_PLATFORM_DISLOYALTY (0x0002)"
And "It's still fun, no?" Yes, yes, and yes again!
(BTW - when is the GardenWeb acquisition going to be finalized? :-D)
;)
LOL, Lophophora, you DID really know that was a joke, yes? (Garden Web Acquisition)
