have a simple ability to purchase a friend a subscription

That's available, but it's just not advertised. When you go to buy a subscription, it asks you for the username of the recipient. Just type your friends' username (make sure it's their username!) in that field and off you go! :)

I'd like it if we could put in a person's e-mail address and let them choose their own user name. Especially when doing a surprise for someone, it'd be nice if the recipient could choose his/her own name. Could gift subs be added to an invisible "user group" allowing a one-time name change, maybe?

I like Gws Idea,maybe a box that you put the Email addy in.
Ask someone to joinDG,or someone has given you a gift subscription.
