Anybody get this email from paypal

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I just got an email from paypal, stating that their being sued for such and such amount, and everybody who's applied for paypal betewen the years of october 99 -jan. 2004 is entitled to a class action settlement.

You have to go to their site and fill out the claim form which costs money which is to be refunded later to you in order to be apart of the class action. I 'm wondering if this is something for real going on. someone in california is suing them. I have the email. I saved it.

What should I do about it.

I have been getting some kind of emails from Paypal but have never signed up for Paypal or even visited their website. I don't know what was in the emails because my internet service has cleaned the email and sent me a message that it contained a virus. This has happened about 3 or 4 times in the last month. I'd be very cautious about any email asking for money. Jenny

have to pay for a class action lawsuit? Dosnt make sense to me.

Santa Clara, CA(Zone 9a)

Lucky you, they just annouced on our morning news that this is for real. Instead of the government taking them to court, they have agreed to pay the class action lawsuit to subscribers for certain months.

You can only participate in the lawsuit if PayPal has wronged you in the past. They are famous for some of the problems, including suspending accounts for no reason.

I think the lawsuit is good because it is finally giving some accountability to paypal. They have been able to operate outside the law (since they are not technically a bank) but that has started to change recently. This lawsuit should accelerate that change.

I got it, too. The fine print says you can only collect if you previously filed a complaint with them about unfair trade practices.

I think it's a scam in some fashion.

sh1025, my email is not through my ISP, but an internet service I pay for... and it has rejected some emails for a virus, but not this one.

Thanks for the help guys, paypal has never done me wrong in any kind of way, so I have no claims LOL,

Dravencat, you have to pay to submit the claim form. yes. but your suppose to get reembursed, so it says, I didn't read in length about it, and now that it doesn't apply to me, i'm just going to delete it and forget about it.

It doesn't apply to me so I deleted it, too.

We got it...deleted it...Thanks for the info though. Jo

Kathy_Ann, I just thought it was wierd because any time Ive seen paperwork come to me for a situation like this(sears to name one) there was never anything said or printed about paying anything. Im sure its normal but I just never heard of it, guess that makes me wierd too. LOL

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

I received the email too and I deleted it. I don't know if this is a scam or not, but I am aware that in some lawsuits involving a massive number of people that the lawyers representing the claim are the ones who actually financially benefit the most from it. There may be a financial settlement, but common sense should suggest who is actually going to be paid first. Don't get me wrong, there should be honest, fair and professional legal representation; but in most circumstances if not all, any actual settlement covers legal fees first and guess who receives the funds to distribute directly or indirectly - and of course there are fees incurred for proper distribution of those funds.

If paypal is found in a court of law to have commited any violations I definitely agree fines should be levied. I've used paypal via echeck and I haven't had any problems, but I've wondered why it took exactly 4 business days for a payment to be received when you can transfer money through the federal reserve banks faster. These are just my thoughts, Carol

Too bad I never got the email either. My PayPal account was frozen about 2 years ago. PayPal will email you regarding your account because this is how they informed me they had frozen my account due to suspicious activity. That was it, no further explaination. I was frantic because I thought someone had gained unauthorized access to my account. Well, no such thing. Nothing was going on. After conducting my own investigation I couldn't figure out what activity triggered a red flag. It was so frustrating because PayPal totally ignored my emails offering an explaination. I did find phone numbers to call but never did I get a live person, all automated. They kept it frozen for about 3 frustrating weeks. They again notified me via email that the restriction was lifted. After the experience I swore I would never depend on PayPal again :(

Willacoochee, GA(Zone 8b)

we have a habit of cleaning out the account anytime it gets over $300.

especially in the spring, when it is possible that $2,000 may arrive in the account any given week.... it would have been catastrophic if paypal froze an account.

ohh well... starting to shake down the online mafia :p
ccnow is next, I know it.

Linthicum Heights, MD(Zone 7a)

I recommend extreme caution. If you are uncertain, forward a copy of the message to spoof@paypal.com. This is the address to report suspicious activities. PayPal will get back to you.

I have received numerous e-mails purported to be from PayPal and they were bogus. DO NOT COMPROMISE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION.

Decatur, IN(Zone 5a)

I got it too and because it mentioned something about me needing to enter my account info, I quickly forwarded it to spoof@paypal.com If you forward it just as received (Ebay does the same too) they will reply and let you know if its a fraud aka "spoof" email or an actual email they did send.

Anyhow, I did get a reply and here is what it said;

Thank you for contacting PayPal.

Thank you for bringing the "Notice of Pendency of Class Action and Proposed Settlement( email to our attention. We can confirm that PayPal sent this email. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

On June 11th, 2004 PayPal entered into a Settlement Agreement with Girard Gibbs & De Bartolomeo LLP and Wolf Popper LLP for a lawsuit filed in 2002 on behalf of a class alleging that PayPal did not appropriately communicate about customer transactions and did not appropriately process limits that were placed on some customer accounts. In this agreement, PayPal does not acknowledge that any of the allegations in the case are true and entered into the Settlement Agreement to avoid further costs of litigation, and to devote resources to more productive areas of our business

We've never had a problem with PayPal, thank goodness. We do not keep a balance in our PayPal account, nor do we keep one in a checking account we maintain soley for internet purchases (which PayPal debits when we make a payment). When we want to make a purchase, we transfer money from our main checking account into our internet account. That way, our main checking account is not given on the web. We don't have credit cards any more, and though we don't have the protection offered by them on purchases, this is the compromise we chose.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

I got it too...it is definitely legit (although there *are* a lot of paypal spoof emails out there, no doubt!)

Moonlighting...it's people exactly like you (frozen account) that the lawsuit is for. You might still get the email....I had read about it on our server's local forum, and wondered why I hadn't received it, but about 4 days later, I did, indeed receive it.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Oops...I meant to say, also...if you question the email/lawsuit, just go to your local TV news station's website....all of them around here have a story on it.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

I received it too. So far, never had any problems with them, but also don't leave money there, transfer it immediately to bank account which is not our primary account.

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

I am glad I found this thread as I knew nothing of the lawsuit....however, this morning I did receive the email from PayPal after all and I am going to look into it. I told DH about all of this and he is advising me since no "real harm" was done I should just chalk it up as a "learning experience".

My beef with PayPal is that it froze my account with no proof of suspicious activity occuring. I had won several auctions on Ebay during this time and could not pay sellers who accepted PayPal only. I was lucky because they (sellers) understood the situation and worked out a different pay method...but what if they hadn't? Then that would have impacted me negatively on Ebay. I am sure there are other people who weren't so lucky and had bad things happen to them over their accounts being frozen.....

Needville, TX(Zone 9a)

Nan, TY for the info :)

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

Moonlighting - you are entitled to damages if they froze your account and did not offer any explanation or even an explanation that satisfied you.

Here is the webpage the email directs you to for all the settlement details and the online claim forms.

http://www.settlement4onlinepayments.com/

Furthermore, even if they did not freeze your account ever and you were just a PayPal user between Jan 1999 and Feb. 2004 then you can be a claimant under the Statutory Claimant settlement. Statutory claimants are those that did not have a frozen account but were PayPal users before Feb 2004.

Here is a link to the court document that details who qualifies as a Statutory Clamaint and who is a Dispute Resolution claimant (someone who's acct was frozen).

Somehow I missed your post Gemila - good info. :)

langbr, TY for the links...I'm with you - I do think they should be held accountable for their actions.

Washington, PA(Zone 6b)

I make it a habit that if I get an email from any company in which I have an account that I go to the company's website via my web browser as opposed to clicking on a link in an email. Those links could mean trouble. I got an email a while back, supposedly from Ebay, stating I had to update account info. I did NOT click on the link. When I went to my account through Ebay's website, it didn't mention ANYTHING about needing to update account info. Could've been a virus and we all know that virus' can get ugly. Be careful out there...
