castor beans

Bethany, OK(Zone 7b)

This is my first year to grow castor beans. I have two beautiful red plants. The green grow very slow in comparison to the red. In zone 7, I am not sure if the plants will die out and come back or if I need to re-seed each year.
Any advice? prcastle

Here's the info I think you both need:

I'm in zone 5 or 6 depending...

I have to reseed mole bean plant each season.

In 6b we have to reseed also.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I start new ones each year but I think rootdoc said his reseed.

Northern Piedmont, NC(Zone 7b)

pr, I'm also in zone 7 and they are history with the first freeze. I collect the seeds and start a few inside in the winter, but did have a few I missed collecting re-seed in the spring.

Osteole, I have seeds if you would like some.

They reseed readily here in central Missouri. I do collect seeds in the fall to start in the house early if I want to push the season.

To all: Beware: This is one of the most toxic plants in the world. The entire plant is poisonous and two seeds, if eaten will cause death to the average adult within 15 minutes.

JJsGarden I would love some seed. Can I start the plant growing in December for planting outside say....late April?

Sending you mail.

Mercer, PA(Zone 5a)

Osteole,

I started my red one inside last December, set it out in the garden after Memorial Day. Late frosts have been known to hit here even in early June. Luckily late frosts stayed away from us this year and my mole bean plants are doing good.
One thing though, I don't think there's enough summer left for mine to reach their full growth potential. ;~(

awwwh 'tis okay TC! All of us can't grow for maximum height!

I'm just happy we can grow this beauty! I should be able to collect seed and regrow the following year? I wouldn't want to buy new seeds every year... :(
