Counting hummers we go!!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

LOved seeing all your pictures. I guess that is as near as I will get to hummers from now on till spring. There were a couple of Roufus here last week, but haven't seen any hummingbirds at all this week. Will leave the feeders up for awhile. Sure miss the little guys. Donna

The Ruby-Throated Hummers have arrived ... and one of them, in particular .. seems to be getting back into the full swing of hummer-'hoodlum'-dom, too !! So far, I've spotted three of the royal beauties: two seem to be a mating pair, and one other feller - of which has jes gotta be a prior visitor here at the Roost!

Hee .. Something in his eye tells me, that he's no newbie to this holler .. by no means! As opposed to the other two .. being unsure just what me the ol coot are, sittin' out there on the porch .. in wait of some pitter ops to present themselves! The way he seems to run things .. and know where every thing is already. He make his rounds .. around the house to the back porch .. like he knows there's sposed to be a hummer feeder back there! But, we've not put any back there yet! Merely wanted to wait a bit, to see what these two feeders .. here on the front porch may pull in! .. lol ..

Mr. Ben Around .. seems to not give too much of a hoot about us on the porch. He does his fly at us routine, to see if he can run us off .. like he does the other two hummers! The lil dickens, I tell ya ...

Haven't been able to get all three of them in one shot, yet - but there's time. And plenty, of it ! ... hee ...

Anyway, here's a couply or more pitters of this years first hummer feeder visitors! ...

yey!!!

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

All three were out and about .. seemingly, rather late last night .. Mr. Ben Around was determined to guard the feeders .. as long as he possibly could! I figger'd as long as the hummers could 'see' .. and I could catch a glimpse of 'em in my camera; I'd stay out, also .. and keep tryin' to shoot pitters of them!

Heck, it eventually got even too darn'd dark for me to use my cameras' flash, and it still properly auto-focus. I did manage to pull off a few successful shots of them - of which, they look even more like genuine flying jewels, in the night .. when the camera flash, catches them 'jes right' !! See what you think ...

I consider myself, quite 'blessed' .. to have been able to fetch this shot.

I think it was the other lil male .. seemingly comin' to a screechin' halt - when he saw that I was still out also!!

.. Look at the glare he's giving me!! .. hee ..

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Wow. I've never seen so many hummingbirds in my life!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

That orange-bronze throated hummingbird is something else!!!

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Fabulous photos, Magpye. (Big applause) Send some of those gorgeous hummers my way. I just can't wait...and wait I'll have to do, for another month at least! So thanks for sharing.

P.S. I can't believe National Geographic hasn't snapped you up yet. You're good!!!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Magpye is a DG treasure, OldFlowerGirl, glad that you discovered her!

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow, these are amazing shots! I'm sorry, I'm having to skim thru threads and posts, but did you say that you are taking these now with a camera that you don't like?? I only WISH I could get a shot that close up.

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

No, no I didn't take these shots! Magpye did! But, yes I am not happy with my camera. I think that has more to do with my own lack of talent.

Burleson, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry John, I was asking Magpye, but it didn't look like that. I think she said she gave up on hers for a while, now look what she's taking! Trial and error, I guess. Although mine never come out like this at all. lol

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Oops, nevemind! LOL.

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

When it gets dark you can use a flashlight to set the auto-focus. I use it on bugs , I'm sure it will work on the hummers too. A 2 aa maglight works good.

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Thanks for the tip, Rich! Monterey is another DG treasure!!!

Outstanding photos Magpye! Way to go!!!!!

I did know about Monterey as I've admired his photos often before. I guess DG is very fortunate to have such gifted photographers.

Magpye, what fantastic photos of the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird !!! Somehow, I must have over-looked this thread last year. I'm still waiting for my first hummingbird visitor this year. Looks like some have passed me by.

Keep the pics coming !!!

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

I got my first ruby throateds today! :)

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Yall are all jes plum sweet! Thank you!!
All of you folks have such a sweet and kind way of boostin' my morale sumthin' fierce!! (*huggerooners*)

So very glad, that there are so many of us 'hummer-lovers' .. especially here @ DG !!

Yay!! fer ecobioangie!! .. Plum tickled fer ya!! .. You said, Ruby-throatedS! Now, jes how many of 'em are (we) tawkin' bout here -?- .. (heehee) ..

GrannyLois .. you've jes gotta have a few of the flyin' jewels there .. by now, surely-?- Didja ever get yourself a digital camera ? ... If so, you may have to direct me to some of the particular threads, where I can find some of your pics. I'd be most thrilled and honored to share in seeing them ...

OldFlowerGirl .. I've been tryin' to flag some of 'em down .. to expedite their delivery to ya! Had to be content to givin' a couply .. a lil holler while passin' by: told 'em to boogie to BC !! .. (*heehee*) .. Also, I'm afraid that Nat Geo keeps losing my address!! .. lol .. Seriously, I've seen where you reply and post to several of my other critters, vermin and antics threads! Want to thank you, for being such a genuine sweetie!

Juls .. I know you guys have quite a beautiful replacement to fill the bill, for the hummin'bird, there in Israel; but nuthin' would please me more .. than fer a few dozen of the hummers, to get a wee 'off kelter' on their migration destination and directions - and end up right slap-dab in your beautiful gardens also!! Now, wouldn't'at be jes a dandy lil miraculous sumthin'!! ... Hey kiddo, stranger thangs have happen'd, ya know !! .. (*hee*)

Linth .. the hummers are due to arrive there soon, 'ey?!? ... Glad ya found this lil ditty thread too. .. hee ..

Mont .. I've tried the flashlight, several times - but I need a third hand for such! Especially with the hummers!!

hgurule and Imway .. the #'s seem to be on the rise, here @ the Roost too!! Just today, a male was sitting on each of the two feeders (behavin' quite gentlemanly and hospitable-like), and another male honed in on their presence .. and ran those two 'peaceful' lil fellers off. Mere mini-moments later .. jes the daintiest lil female came hoverin' jes inches from my face for a few seconds, before deciding to set down and indulge herself! Of course, my trusty lil Fuji was jes out of reach, over behind me .. sittin' in another chair on the porch! I got a good minds-eye full of this lil sweetie tho'.

Imway .. dadburnit! You done got me eatin' outta yer hand again !! .. (huggeroos to you!) ..

Seems that every year, after their being gone for a few months - I find that I'm still in awe of jes how very tiny these lil jewels truly are! I reckon we tend to forget how detailed a dainty a lil creature God made them. Albeit, they're mitey gallish and brave lil demolition derby contestants - but still mitey tiny lil critters, jes the same!!

Hint: once you've seen the first few hummers visiting your feeders: move the feeders to a wee bit lower level .. and remain very close by, and let them 'find' the feeders again. Then, thereafter - they're a wee more willing subjects, so-to-speak ... and much more accessible to you and your camera! * But, for goodness and safety sake - when you're thru or no longer will be right close to the feeders > please, remember to put your feeders back up, and plenty high enuff .. away from the 'predator' meow kitties, and/or what ever else may pose any threat to the lil jewels !!!

Happy Hummer watchin' (and duckin') .. to you all !! ..

Magpye, those are simply outstanding shots. My favorite is the 'air brakes' shot, but all of them are just superb for clarity! Wow!

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

Mags, wonderful shots. I love #6. She looks like she's daring any other hummer to come near and see what they get!

Becky.

(Zone 10b)

Amazing sight. I have one feeder up and only one bird drinks at a time. The hummingbirds are so territorial that they chase each other when they come within sight. It's great that you have so many feeders. I'm sure the hummers are grateful.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Thanks, all of you guys !! ..

And a big ol 'hearty' welcome to DG .. to ya, GreenLife !!

The #'s of the hummers seem to be increasin', every few days .. from what I could tell, there's now 2 females and 4 males.

Didn't learn till yesterday .. that the lil boogers jes love the Bleeding Heart flowers!!!!
One, like to've made me come out of my skin, yesterday - while I was leaned over and on my knees ... pullin' a few lil weeds that'd popped up in that particular flower bed!

If the truth be known - we scared the dickens outta each other! .. lol

- Magpye

(Zone 10b)

Thank you for the welcome. I've finally come across individuals who are as interested in hummingbirds as myself.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

A few more Ruby-throated Hummer pics ...

... Pic #1 of 4 ... There's 4 Ruby-throateds in the pic .. with a couple of 'em appearing somewhat transparent, or ghost-like! .. hee
