Again, great shots! How is that "Pole barn" feeder working out. I have been intending to make one just like that but, never seem to find the time.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

imway ... most all of the birds seem to prefer the 'open-ness' of the flat feeder, to any of the others around the yard. We'd had a different one (smaller) .. but built a new one, with a bit larger tray, and added another 4-6 inches to the height.
The clear plexi-glass top, serves as a much needed aid to enable the various birds to see very WELL .. as to what's incomin', from all directions! Numerous hawks do make their occasional flyovers and visits thru the yard ..

We threw that thing together in just a matter of an hour or so .. using scrap cedar lumber. More time was spent on cutting the old used plexi-glass and getting it screwed on and siliconed at the seams, than anything ...

The only drawback of the open flat feeder that I've found thus far, is .. that it enables the Mourning Doves to be able to lite and set their greedy selves in there far easier .. and literally engorge on the seed! The Blue Jays come and do their thing ever so often too .. but with it being so close to our front porch like this; the Jays are far less apt to visit! Too leary a bird ... Matter of fact, another part of the reason (besides easier pitter-takin'!) in putting it so close to the porch .. was in hopes that the Doves would be less apt to visit also. LOL

But them heifers! It's posed no delimna for them at all! ... Hee They spyball the mountain of sunflower and other premium seed piled there, and make a 'bee-line' for it .. LOL We, generally, can keep them shoo'd off before they eat it all up ...

Curious tho', so I've gotta ask: Do 'your' birds 'chew you out' - if/when you've accidentally let the feeders go empty .. a bit too long, to 'suit' them ?!? .. hee .. Ours sure do! And, so loudly too ... I swear to goodness, they all do lil 'party dances' and make all kinds of racket, when they see us comin' with the seed !!

Ya really oughta get yaself a couple of the open/flat feeders made soon ...

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Plexi-glass! Huh, good idea, hadn't thought of that. I was thinkin' about using old window screen for at least part of the floor, too. For drainage. And, setting it about 6" off the ground.

My short list for a camera came down to the Fuji s5000 and the Canon S1 IS. I went with the Canon cuz I have a tremor in my left arm (multiple sclerosis) and the image stableization feature at $360 clinched it for me.

I posted a foto with a question you might be able to help me with. Its at http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/450546/
First time I tried inserting a link at DG. Hope it works!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Forgot to add: No they don't chew me out, yet. So far, I'm able to keep up with their feed and water! Plus there is still a lot of natural food around.

Magpye, these are amazing pictures ! How fun for you to have so many sweet little hummingbirds come to your yard.

What kind of camera do you have? I'm wanting a new one, and sure do like what yours does.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

GrannyLois .. Thank you so much!

Myself and few others here @ DG .. share a similar passion for our Fuji S5000 digitals.

There's been quite a few threads, that discuss many of the various digital cameras that we have, use, favor, desire, and shoot for (shopping goals, that is!) ...

The Fuji has a 10X optical zoom, and is absolutely, just a fine and dandy lil ditty - for it's price, the megapixel/resolution, and its wonderful capabilities! Here's the Fuji website, about the S5000 ..... http://fujifilm.com/JSP/fuji/epartners/digitalS5000Overview.jsp?item=I616756&dbid=616756&urltype=overview

You should be able to find a virtual wealth of info, tips, recommendations, etc. .. just right here, @ DG! There are several DGer reviews and notes about many of the digitals that any and all of us .. either use/used, and/or have purchased - that are provided within many of our posts/replies! (Whew .. that's a long sentence! Hee) ..

And there are many hyperlinks offered .. to enable a much broader range of perspectives of various reveiws of many of the digital cameras!

Camera does not have macro setting but, is able to focus as close as 3.9". This is S. greggii "Hot Pink" taken from approx. 12" out. Note that the leaves are in focus while the flower seems (to me) slightly out of focus. Is this something that is inherent with bright colors and thus, unavoidable?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1st .. maybe check the lil switch, for your 'Focus' settings on the Top Left of the S5000 ... (I generally use/keep mine set on S-AF) ....

2nd .. Remember too, that depending upon where you 'center' your focus lines on the subject in your EFV or the LCD .. (accompanied with the possibility of your camera being set to 'center' focus mode -SEE the 3rd option below) - that any other items outside of the 'lines'.. will dim/fade/appear out of focus, etc. ...

* 3rd .. When using Auto-Focus mode (of which my own pics are, 95% of the time) .. the focus mode (or, 'perspective', I call it! hee) can be changed .. from multi, centered, or entire area!!

With the particular pic you posted, and stating that the flower itself was 'out-of-focus' and the surroundings were ok ... and if you were using AF - I'd check to see what focus mode setting you've got it on ...

I'll betcha it's a simple lil 'check' .. to fix things! (If ya haven't done so already!)

Too little, too late probably ... but imway, I do apologize for not 'reading' it well, and noticing your request .. long before now tho' ... Puhleez fergib me?

Monterey, that's a beautiful shot!

mont ... Re: 'How far away from your feeder are you? Do you shoot thru your window? ....'

Usually, I'm sitting or standing within 3 feet or so .. and, I can either rest my cam'ra on the back of one of the other lawn chairs, placed in front of me for some added stability .. or, stand and prop against a porch post. ... But, on quite a few occasions, I set up my tri-pod and stand within a foot of the feeders! I've gotta sorta get real comfy while standing ... and stay relatively still.

Least every 2 or 3 days tho', the hummers are just 'so' ready to feed ..that it wouldn't matter who, what or where I was! .. hee hee .. This is especially the case .. when I've had the feeders away and inside, for about half an hour - cleaning them - and have them re-filled with the cool stuff when I bring them back outside to the porch! It's like, they get all beside themselves with excitement ... "our goodies, she's bringing our goodies back! Hoo-ray! Yippee !!" .. LOL ..

Yep, mont ... from what I could tell (tho' I'm not familar with them myself) - it sure looks to be the Annas .. according to the site I had to pull up to see any for ID! hee hee I think any chance of us seeing anything here .. other than the Ruby Throateds - is slim-to-none, at best! .. hee ...

You also asked if I shoot any of the hummers thru the windows. Never have had to, and I don't think I've got any windows that would be anywhere near 'nuff to the feeders to do so.
Even shots thru the sliding glass doors off our bedroom, wouldn't get any decent nuff pics.

In the winter time however .. I most definitely shoot the majority of the pics of the birds feeding on the seed we pitch out onto the ground - through our dining room windows! We always chunk big ol heaps of seed out, especially when there's snow or ice on the ground. We've viewed and documented quite a variety of birds that come countin' on finding plenty of food here .. Even the Towhees and Fox Sparrows give up their secret little lives in the underbrush, to come feast!

I am most anxious for fall and winter. Being able to partake of all four actual seasons here - was the biggest draw for us, when we moved from Louisiana. And we can really and truly recognize and tell the differences when each occurs! Way down south, it was summer heat and horrid humidity 9.5 months out of the year, and 2.5 of wet cold!! And neither do I miss the Mississippi gumbo mud betwix my toes neither! Born and raised a southern gal .. just meant to be elsewhere. And the good Lord plopped me - Rightchere!! .. hah

Well, I reckon it's 'nuff fer now! You agree ? .. Hee Hee ..

OOOOPS! Let me chunk something atcha! .. Mont, or any one .. Got any idea as to why when I 'preview' my posts .. My text and word lines look 'lined up', equal, etc. .. just perfect. Everything looks just fine and dandy I tell ya. But, when it shows up in the post - it looks an utter 'ugh' dislocated horrible mess! Any clues ? Any suggestions ? Incidentally, this started happening about the very same time, the new version of DG.com was implemented! Probably all on my end of things, surely. Maybe it's some browser settings I need to take a closer look-see to .. I'll work on it.

beautiful pictures. I sit with my camera, but seems as if they see it and move on. I have never had more than one hummer at a time at the feeder. That is a great feeder, never seen that type. Can you suggest where I can shop for one.
You are a great photographer. Thanks for sharing

Hummers really don't have a lot of pigment in their feathers, that's why in certain light and at different angles they appear different colors.

Bet you could capture a lapping tongue if the bottom part of the feeder were clear. In fact, I challenge you (or, monte or, others) to do just that! Capture a hummer's tongue lapping up the energy juice! 1st place wins a big hooray; 2nd place a oh well, second's not bad; 3rd place a oh well!

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Naww, gonna pass ... Not bitin' on any 'challenges' ... heehee

Any reward for me .. is in just being so blessed to be able to still see
these little jewels with wings, along with the many other critters and vermin ..
and the beauty of all of nature that surrounds me ..

For this ol gal .. just being able to share them with family, friends, and
other folks .. and they're letting me know how much they enjoy viewing
them also - is the icing on my proverbial 'cake' .. I tell ya!

But by all means .. any one else .. Hey, go fer it !!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

I did that cuz I really want to see that tongue in action captured! Didn't really mean a race! Coulda phrased it better!

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Heehee .. Good-ness ..I figger'd as much .. lol ..

I'm gonna be watchin' .. for just such to appear soon! .. heee
