I may have to take this one to my photo program, and insert some 'arrows' to pinpoint these guys - but, I've come up with 12 of 'em!!!!!! I'm totalled awe struck .. with d'lite!!

There are three (vertical) near a porch post, and there's two others 'visible' within the telephone/utility pole ..

Magpye, some great pics. To determine how many hummers you really have, you need to multiply the number of hummers you can see at any given time by 6. This will give you the approximate number of hummers you have in and around your yard. When you count 12 at one time, you really have around 70. Most Ruby's feed on average once every 2 - 3 minutes. Approximately every 10 days there is a complete turn-over of the Ruby's in your yard this time of year. By this I mean that the hummers you have today will be some place else in 10 days and the hummers you have will have come from some place else. The fall migration has started and they are constantly on the move, southward.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Magpye, Wonderful pictures! I usually don't have more than 2 feed at the same time. My birds are so territorial, they spend more time chasing each other off - - than they do feeding.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Magpye, Great pictures.

Hummer_nut, I had read that before that for every hummer you could see add 5 or 6 in count. Yesterday walking around the house counting hummers at the 7 different feed stations I counted 20 of the little beauties. I know a lot of them are this years young.

Nathalyn, yes the males especially are very territorial. I think the Roufus are the worst. just sit there watching for another hummer to come drink, but aren't they wonderful. Donna

Great pictures. I'm amazed at how close you can get to them.

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

Here I am is the shot . I love it when I see a SHOT that captures the beauty of wildlife rather then the kind that ends it. I also love the one point in time. If it ever comes again or not, you stopped it there and then! Excellant Shooting !

He/she is defintely eyeballin' that other beak!

I will have to be content with your photos until I can afford to go digital! You certainly have "entertained" me with your pics. Thanks!

On second thought, maybe I'll just forget the camera. I have access to amazing photography right here at Dave's Garden, for crying outloud. Your shots of butterflies and hummers are just fantastic!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

I am still making 2 quarts of nectar every day. Altho today I haaven't as yet seen any orioles, maybe they have left for their winter quarters. they are such a pretty bird. I have used 30 lb. of sugar this summer just for hummer feed!!Donna

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

Magpye - What fantastic shots. I wish I could see more than one at at feeder here, but no such luck.

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

Thank YOU all, for enjoying the pics .. !!

In the last couple of weeks .. I've found myself preparing 4-5 galllons of sugar water!!! I wash and refill the feeders every 2 days - using 2 gallons of mixture!! Keep and place the other 2 + gallons in the fridge ...

We keep 5 feeders going .. which are (4) 1 qrt bottles and (1) gallon feeder.

Wanted to mention .. that I use a varying ratio of sugar to water also. So much depending on the number of hummers we see visiting the feeders ...

Usually, it's 1 part sugar to 5 parts water .. when they're 'frenzy feeding' at the feeders (meaning there are just far too many hummers to concievably count)! hee hee

When there's an abundance of flowers in bloom most everywhere about ... I change the ratio (less sugar or more water) .. usually, one part sugar to 6 parts water! I also will keep less feeders in use then also .. when they're focusing on the flowers in bloom!

The hummers seem to especially go for the 'friderated' stuffs (HEE!) ... They'll really flock to it, and tank up on it!!

Imway2dumb .. submit your wish list to the miss/mr Santee soon!! Ya jes never know .. hee hee

beclu727 .. hang in there! It's not uncommon for the hummers to frequent the flowers, when they're in full bloom everywhere else! They'll come ... !! Time is near, that they'll be searching hi & low and may be depending upon all of our goodie feeders .. in order to tank up for their migration!

One, or some of us .. needs to start a thread within this forum/subject - about what particular brand and type each of us use and prefer .. for our hummer bird feeders!! And of course, include requests for ingenuity and any ideas in building/creating our own!

Incidentally, here about 6 or so years ago .. Rubbermaid had a very nice feeder with the plastic bottle that had a larger opening - which made cleaning SO MUCH easier!!! All of a sudden, they just up and quit making them! I even checked with the Rubbermaid company .. their reason for discontinueing the particular hummer feeder: said, "it didn't sell well". Geez, I'd have begged to differ .. but, at any rate .. I haven't seen them in the last few years! Super disappointing!

Gordonville, TX(Zone 7b)

Go for it magpye, I'll be there.

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Magpye for the encouragement. I've seen quite a few at my hanging baskets today. Usually they are just at the feeder. I have 3 feeders and will probably add a 4th next year. Have seen as many as 5 darting about at one time, so I guess there are more I don't see.

Dixon, KY(Zone 7a)

love the pictures I have tried to get so many pictures but the hummers never sit still long enough I can stand right by them and they land and fly around me but I can never snap that picture fast enough. really enjoyed your pictures

Waaaaa....why wont my Anna's share? Are Ruby's known for their willingness to share and Anna's known for their territorial instincts? Would make sense if Anna's are year around and Ruby's are not in AR?

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

ladyanne .. Now, I jes don't know! .. hee ... Do know that the Ruby Throateds' are migratory.
It won't be long, we'll be missin' these little characters and all of their antics .. greed, and otherwise!
I'd seen, and heard .. so many saying that it was the males that are territorial .. It's been
from my own observances - that the female Ruby Throateds are just as much so - if not MORE so!!!
I'm thinkin' these guys (& gals) .. all just get pooped out, and decide to give it 'rest' .. after all of that fightin', gripin', and bumpin' about!! .. lol ..
The few pics I've seen posted elsewhere (& in my bird books) .. of the Annas .. you, and others, are so blessed to be able to see such a variety of hummers, and some of them .. year round, to boot!! ..

Merced, CA(Zone 9a)

Magpye, we certainly are blessed with the year arounds. I fear the year Mama doesn't return, she has been here four years, and I haven't the vaguest idea how old she really is.

I am working on my 2004 pics but if you would like to peek, previous year nest pictures are at www.packrat-pro.com then click o the little hummer.

Very nice Ladyanne. I spent some of my childhood in Atwater. Some of the best times. Good to see another Ca. gardener aand photographer. This is my little friend. I call him/her Arnold, because her/him always comes back. Would you know why it doesn't use the feeder. I have 2 and have tried different formulas, etc. It still only goes for flowers. Is it a boy or a girl? Pic.
