Information/Memories of times past...

Louisville, KY

In the process of searching for one thing I came across this facinating site -- Household Cyclopedia of General Information regarding interesting articles about home hints. It will bring back memories of times past. Enjoy!

This is a wonderful site, VG! I was quite interested in the segment on seaweed, since we live on the cost. The methods for many things are the same, but worded differently in 1881. Here's an example:

"Sea-weed is applied at all seasons to the surface, and sometimes, though not so profitably, it is mixed with untrodden dung, that the process of putrefaction may be hastened."

This passage prompted a lymric:

Years ago, when I was quite young
I gardened with untrodden dung
Though t'was quite a battle
To suspend all the cattle
From the barn rafters
Where they were strung.

Crossville, TN

LOL Wheezin!! Jo

I don't know what is the matter with me today... I'm thinking in rhyme!

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Very cute rhyme Weezy. I can just picture it. Makes me think of the comment we used to make when we got a splat! from a passing bird, "I'm sure glad cows don't fly".

My DH gave me an example of untrodden dung... following horses in the parade... providing they are the tail of the parade!

Reading some of these old gardening methods brings home the fact that we still garden pretty much the same, just use different terminology.
