How do you define spam?

Grove City, OH(Zone 6a)

I am so mad!!!!!!!

Since my 'puter was under the weather for so long, I could seldom read my e-mails, much less spend a lot of time cleaning out the mailbox.

Well, our local newspaper, all by itself, has taken it upon itself to send e-mail version (loaded with ads, pop-ups, hidden spyware, etc.) to everyone. Unsolicited!!!!!

When I replied, outraged, that they who so sanctimonously denounce spam in its printed newspages, that they dared spam me, they claim that this is a "free service" to its subscribers, and it therefore is not spam.

I say spam is anything that is mass-mailed without first wanting to be. How dare they! Gggggrrrrrrr!!!!!! I spent 5 minutes going through all their long pages to decline to receive anymore spam. While fending off all their ad garbage. A furious letter-to-the editor will be sent shortly (I just know they will not print or reply to it)

I have to see what I signed up for in anti spam, but it reduced my spam emails from about 800 a day to about 50!!!

Gee, I can't say I miss it! Y'all say what you want about AOL, but it's rare when I get 1 a month, usually none :)

We pay an extra $2 a month to our local server to put all spam in a file all its own. Well worth the money, believe me. I was getting so much porn, financial/credit card offers, online vitamin/prescription offers, etc. that I hated to open our mail. Now I do it all thru the server's private mail service before loading it onto our computer. All I have to do is make sure that anyone on an open relay server is moved over to our acceptable mail list or I will miss their mail too. I had someone on E=bay, one nursery I was ordering from, and a DIL who could not get thru to me until I discovered the problem and corrected it. Even politicians and political party propoganda have a hard time getting thru to us. Every week or so I look and see how many are in there and click Delete All to get rid of all of it.

To me, spam is anything I didn't ask for personally.

Is it the Columbus Dispatch, Kathy? Their privacy policy: http://www.dispatch.com/services-story.php?story=dispatch/services/Faq/privacy.html

Interesting tidbits there, like this:

We will periodically send you promotional email about services offered by Dispatch.com and its advertisers and marketers on the Web. These promotions will be tailored to the interest categories you have indicated and are controlled by The Columbus Dispatch. Your identity will not be revealed to the marketer unless you respond directly to the marketer's offer and provide your information.

I would definately consider unsolicted newspapers in my emai as Spam! Write that letter and file your complaint with them. Their "Free service to subscribers" If you subscribe to the paper why would you want to get it in your Email account too!

I have cable modem and our provider has free spam filter. Plus I bought Norton antispam. Between the two I no longer see ANY spam. And I was getting ALOT.

my email has a "Block address" ability and any unwanted address can be blocked. That helps a lot, unless you accidently block a friend's address. :-(

My definition of SPAM is anything I didn't ask for. I have a private (paid) email service NOT connected with my ISP and it does a great job of filtering. I probably get 1-2 SPAM emails a week, in a separate folder.

Personally, I think spam is any unsolicited email but I believe - if I am politically correct here and I could be wrong - any email that is not fraudulent cannot legally be considered spam. Virginia has enacted a law against spam and a few spammers have already been charged, but I still receive about 20 spam emails a day without having any filters. Will these folks ever realize I am a female and don't need viagra or to increase a male appendage???

Bulk mail bothers me too, but it sure doesn't annoy me as much as spam does.

Here's the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003:

Good reading if you're having trouble sleeping, LOL

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

I changed my email address and nowadays I never put it in the internet - only like aimo-n(at)kolumbus.fi, aimo-n@POISTAkolumbus.fi, etc.. I have received total 4 trash emails since I changed my address - it was, ehm, over a year ago? :)
