I'm doing a lil history, True Americans, Always remember thi

Temple, GA(Zone 7b)

I just felt this would be a flashback in time that some of us seem to put on the back burner. I admire this man and his speeches, and would love some feed back and more history. I have a project to do, and will be painting the Historical American Flags as a border, and the Gettysburg Address in Archaetic English in a Government Building. Any advice or help woulod be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!

Gettysburg Address (1963)

Perhaps the most famous battle of the Civil War took place at Gettysburg, PA, July 1 to July 3, 1863. At the end of the battle, the Union's Army of the Potomac had successfully repelled the second invasion of the North by the Confederacy's Army of Northern Virginia. Several months later, President Abraham Lincoln went to Gettysburg to speak at the dedication of the cemetery for the Union war dead. Speaking of a "new birth of freedom," he delivered one of the most memorable speeches in U.S. history

Gettysburg Address (1863) - Transcript

Executive Mansion,
Washington, , 186_.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that "all men are created equal"

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it, as a final resting place for those who died here, that the nation might live. This we may, in all propriety do. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow, this ground-- The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have hallowed it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here; while it can never forget what they did here.

It is rather for us, the living, to stand here, we here be dedica-ted to the great task remaining before us -- that, from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here, gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people by the people for the people, shall not perish from the earth

You should read the book LINCOLN THE UNKNOWN by Dale Carnegie. It's an older book, but it's very good.

Interestingly, Lincoln believed the Gettysburg address was a failure.

My favorite Lincoln quote: When some of his staff was cutting down General Grant to Lincoln, and saying he drank too much whiskey, Lincoln replied "What brand? I want to send a few barrels to my other generals."

Indashade,
So, Do you not like him, and I am doing a designer project for a Government building and am looking for any info on Lincoln, and Historical Flags. I am a Designer Painter, and I am going to paint all the historical flags I can find as a border around the ceiling, and then it has a chairrail, and I am planning to paint that a deep dark blue. Also, I am gonna paint "The Gettysburg Address" on another wall with a stencil in Old English or Archaeic English. Could you help me with some Good history on Lincoln, or a website w/, the 1st flag til now. Please, Please. I do not have much time left, and I stayed up all night with this. ...and thanks for the reference on the book.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. I know drinking is wrong, but I think they all did it back in those days, but they should not have drank out of control.

Thank You,
And Please,please,

Go to any library or bookstore and you should be able to find a load of books and history on Lincoln and the Civil War.

Lincoln only made the whiskey remark because up until that point the war wasn't going very well for the North. His generals were very tentative and hesitant to move, but Grant was a fighter and a risk taker. I guess he thought maybe if he plied his other generals with the same brand of whiskey that Grant drank, he could make fighters out of them too. :-)

Traci, I don't know what kind of Public Govermental Building you are hoping to work on, but I think whatever you portray should be more inclusive that just Abe Lincoln; that is, unless this building is in IL or near where Lincoln might have lived or died. I like the idea or the flags of the US. I would not read a complete message of the Gettysburg address on a wall; it does not evoke that much interest. Period bunting painted on a wall would be timeless. I have listed below quotes of all presidents and added Lincoln quotes and a History of the US Flag. Best wishes on your efforts. I hope you might find this information helpful.

I think the entire message was excellent. We have all heard the beginning and end but I have completely forgotten the body of the message. Thanks for reminding us of that historic moment. PS. my great grandfather was in that battle and all the soldiers of the North and the South are carved on a monument. Keep up the good work. Chech out any University library, they have much more info than a public library or bookstore.

Thanks everyone, and I will check out the library and bookstores. The reason for the Gettysburg Address Speech is the Chief likes Abraham Lincoln, and it is in a court services and probation dept, where people on probation have to see their probation officer, and we kinda felt that the speech let them know they do have rights, and that noone was there to just be harsh to them, but that they needed to do their part.
And that everyone is created equal, and not any of us are better than them. And I do think alot of kids today do not know the speech and what it really stands for, so if only 5-10% read it, it'd be better than none!

Thanks so much, Traci S

My maternal great grandfather left some blood on that battlefield too.

I wonder than any youngster today would read the entire speech .... they are SO accustomed to 'sound bites'.

I have to say the speech impresses me (and always has), but not nearly as much as actually seeing the statue of him @ the Lincoln Memorial. I think the sheer size helped me understand what an outstanding man he really was.

Thanks so much Darius, and my sincere gratitude for your Great Grandfather and all of the Great men who had to fight in that battle.
But, I do believe that if only a handful of kids, if that many, read it, maybe it might help just one to STOP and THINK!

Thanks,

LOL, Molly is it that you are just mad or are u just a little jealous that I got a real job doing some designer painting, by interviewing and having to actually paint to get the job, or what? Or is it that since we are no longer friends, you'd like for people to think that I am on probation. LOL, which I'm not. But, I am considering taking some classes in Criminal Justice to be a Paralegal, and the person who saw some of the work I have done, is going to West Ga College to be a Probation Officer and works at Home Depot w/ a relative of mine, and he helped me think of a theme to do for the interview. It was just a sample, but it also had to be complicated. And some of the flags aren't just stars and stripes. Anyway, maybe I should not have called myself a Designer Painter, but I never knew that would offend you so much to the point that you would write me such a ridiculous email Molly. But, the title Designer Painter is used by people who do stencil work, as well as people who can paint free hand like I did in the interview, and like I will be doing since I got the job. The only thing that will be stenciled is the Gettysburg Address, if I choose to use that. Since this is in a Court Services Building on one side and a Probation Dept. on the other side and I am painting the Foyer and the hall and probably some type of Golf Theme in the Chief's Office, I was only asking advice from people who cared about our History, and not from someone who would get angry b'cause I happened to call myself a Designer Painter- since that was the Title of the job that I applied for and got.
Well, anyway, enough of this.
I just wanted to say Thanks to those of you who did appreciate the real meaning of what I was trying to say, and thanks to everyone who replied to the real meaning of the post, and if anyone can think of anything good that applies to the True meaning of our flags, and The Gettysburg Address or another great Presidential Speech, then please post it.
And to everyone else, I apologize to vent this on here, but after Molly's little sarcastic -LOL-, I had to atleast post a reply. And, as for Molly and I, we are no longer friends. I have had some issues that are very personal that I have had to deal with and I have dealt with it, and am doing much better. But, in this post, I just felt that was a real sarcastic remark, and was very childish and distasteful, since this post had nothing to do with Molly, nor our personal reasons for choosing not to associate any more. So, I just felt as though I should apologize for how this all came about.
There is a time and place for everything, and I could have swore this was Dave's Garden and not "Dear Abby."

Thanks,
TraciS
