sick magnolia?

Oak Grove, MN(Zone 4a)

I have a new magnolia "Jane" who just got planted. I guess I left her in her pot too long. Now her leaves look kind of filmy-maybe powdery mildew? She has dropped quite a few leaves too, but growth tips still look good. Help?

Sylvi74,
How big is the Magnolia? For powdery mildew I have always been told to spray it down with dishwashing liquid. It couldn't hurt, especially since you said the growth still looks good. I would try that 1st, before some of these places reel you in on something that you pay $$$'s for and could get the same results. What is the weather like there? What color are the leaves that are dropping? Do you see any buds, and I would fertilize it too, after you do the dishwashing detrgent.
LMK, how it turns out.

Thanks and Good luck,

Hi, I'll try some dish soap. How do I mix it? Magnolia is maybe 2 and a half feet tall, was in a 2 gallon pot from Home Depot. Leaves are turning kind of yellow and dropping, but new healthy leaves are still appearing. Weather here has just been stupid. I like hot humid MI summers, but this one has been relatively cool. We are only supposed to be 70 today. It rained 10 inches in May. Flowerbuds are all gone now, I read that Jane will rebloom but I don't expect much the first year.

sylvi, I think you can expect a few leaves to drop off due to transplant stress. Hopefully you are watering regularly to help get it settled in and encourage new root growth. Also hoping you put it where it has good drainage (that's a lot of rain ya'll had in May).

You can make a spray of baking soda (1 T-spoon to a quart of water), put in a drop of dish soap and spray the leaves, both top and undersides to help w/the mildew.

Thanks. I am watering a lot, because it has been dry since the 10 inches of rain stopped! Also, magnolia is fairly near a huge maple that sucks up all the moisture from my flowerbeds. It is the city's tree (in that little berm between sidewalk and street) so I can't cut it down but I keep trimming it and maybe it will die mysteriously. . .
