My wisteria root hairs have small (~3/16") grape-like clusters of brown balls on them. The wisteria is fine, but a rose I planted there last year didn't make the winter; I thought our unusually cold winter got it.
Now, I hesitate to plant anything new there. Is this a normal "wisteria thing", or a disease/fungus/pest?
Roots have brown balls on them! Help!
I've never seen wisteria roots, but a lot of plants from the bean family (wisteria is in the bean family) form nodules on the roots. These are caused by bacteria that put nitrogen in the soil. It's good for the plant and good for the soil.
Kelli, you were right! I found an article describing and picturing them. They are nodules which help the plant get enough nitrogen!

Thanks!
