What would you do?

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Okay, I've excited myself and i cant stand it.
Alot of you know that my husband is working in Iraq. We've been buying a few dinars here and there.
Iraq is expected to become a free country on the 30th, and in order for that to happen their money has to be on the world market.
The projections are that it will open at 30 cents on the dollar. If that happens, we will have made quite a hefty profit. If it only opens at 1 cent, we've still made a nice bit.

In the past few hours i've looked at real estate, motorcycles, boats, greenhouses, toys toys and more toys.

If you came in to 6 figures, would you invest it? Vacation?

I guess my ideal dream would be to move to upstate New York, pay cash for our house, build a greenhouse and putter.
of course, things like this just dont happen to us. I very seldom allow myself to dream, because i always seem to get let down.
This seems bizzarre enough that it just may happen. Worst case scenerio it doesnt do anything and we hold out, or we've lost our investment. Lord knows, we've wasted more on riskier things, lol.
I'm looking forward to hearing your replies
thanks

Invest it wisely, Jen. Resist the temptation to "have it all now" and invest in a future that will be more secure for you because you were wise now. That is the way we have lived our lives and believe me, we have never been sorry.

Wow! That would be great news to have such a windfall come your way.

Now if only I could sell my house........ 8-)

Jen-

Sit on the money for a while. (once you have it!)
Don't make big changes in your life just yet. Take time to plan and plan well. It IS exciting to come into money- but money goes so very fast.
The best thing will be when you can sit back and just "breathe" and not have to worry about the bills! LOL
Vacations only last a short while- land and family can go on forever. (and plants too!) LOL

Edit. LOL

Buying a big fancy home in "the perfect neighbourhood" sounds just great. But then you have the taxes to pay as well as the higher bills. If it were me- I'd buy a few acres and a good home somewhere where land is reasonable, a place you can happily grow old that wont eventually break bank.
Good luck!!!

I hope this pans out for you and your dreams can come true. If it does work out your idea of buying a home in the area of your choice is one that would seem wise and a good investment. Good luck!

Moab, UT(Zone 6b)

Try Washington County, good farm land up there. Don't pay top dollar, but they're not making any more land and that does make it a good investment.

Beginning to count chickens ... hehehe
'Let your dreams come true with the money.'

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

speaking of chickens, i wanna raise them too, lol (at least we will have something to eat, eh? lol)

IF (big IF) it does anything, i dont imagine we will do anything for a while. Talk about leading up to a few sleepless nights. Talked to bill just a few ago and he just bought a few more. The guy that he buys them from said that there was a line at the bank, which is so unusual for Baghdad, but such a good sign for us. Read a site tonight that said come the 1st of July there are going to be ALOT of jobs available at Halliburton. Kinda thought that was cute.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think the biggest thing we would do (pending the IF) would be to move to our retirement home. Doubting very seriously if we paid 100% cash for it..bigger dream even still.

Like i was telling him, okay, so we buy the house, buy the harley, blah blah blah and that leaves x amount....what are we going to do next year? 10 yrs from now?? his reply? well, youre gonna sell plants, lol. gotta love him.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Of course now reality has set in, and im thinking "yeah right". He wont be in Kuwait until the 5th and its supposed to hit the market on the 30th/1st. Our luck, it will peak on the 1st and level out by the 5th.
Aaargh, why do i do this to myself? lol, i'm destined to live in my mobile mansion, in a state i cant stand
but i do have my plants .
either way, were in the same boat as a whole bunch'a people. Soldiers and civilians have been buying millions of them based on a dream.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Ugh..read somewhere today that it wont open on the world market until the end of July.
Oh well, such is life, lol, it was a short lived "what if"..

Should you happen to make the big bucks, and I hope that you do, I think that you should follow your dreams while you have the health and means to do so. What good is saving for a rainy day if you miss all of the sunny days while doing so?

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

If you have that much riding on this investment it seems that it would be worth the airfare to be there at the appropriate time to make it happen.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Zany, the problem is no one knows when appropriate time is going to be.

Some are projecting the end of July, others are projecting 2 years.

bill will be home on the 8th, and i highly doubt that anything is going to happen in the next week. he will be bringing the dinars with him, so should they hit the global market, at least they will be here where i can exchange them.

i just talked to bill and finally told him "thats it, when it happens, it happens, if it doesnt, it doesnt."....i've speculated for the past week to the point that i've myself dizzy.
thanks again for all the input

Having gone through several financial cycles of Up and Down myself (and now in one of the Down cycles) I advise you to invest whatever monies you may realize in an affordable home FIRST.

I wasn't wise enough to do that, and now find myself with lots of Things and no Place to call my own.
