Yes, you can laugh at me

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Oh, you guys are going to find this so funny. Fortunately, it's one of those things that you simply must laugh at yourself about.

Water crystals - Have any of you used these? Have any of you used too many of these in one place?

I thought I had a good idea. Water crystals in my new flower bed. I'm in Oklahoma, afterall, and the heat in summer is high and the rain is scarce. I knew that I would be in IL for about 3 weeks, too, so I thought that would be the perfect solution to any lack of rain.

Well, the idea WAS a good one. Still is, in fact. Too good. I think they need a warning label for folks like me who think "if a little is good, a lot must be better". :) Have you ever seen what a mound of very wet water crystals looks like coming out of the top of a hole? It resembles a volcano made of clear jello. Lots of jello, actually. Bethany, my daughter, helped me scoop up the excess and would you belive we have a bucket full of clear goo?

She came inside after discovering the mess and said, "Mom, I think we have a problem in your flower bed. It looks like a fungus." I followed her and laughed until I couldn't breathe.

Of course, you all are probably perfect and never had a mistake like this gardening, but I thought I'd allow myself to be the brunt of a joke or two and share this.

P.S. My flowers look gorgeous!

That's a good one! You paint a very visual picture - I can just see it oozing out of the ground - like those horror shows, with the oozing lagoons, etc. ROFL

You are right Carla. It is a very good idea. I guess it just needs a little work;)

That's cute - do you think you can keep the leftover until you need it again?

I thought I'd get some help you see
when I bought the water-holding thingey
my plants would need a drink or three
while I was gone visiting family

I put em down, soaked em good
watched em swell with water,
just like the label said they would

My mind was at ease when I left that day
my plants would have water
while I was away

Now I'm back and there's something strange...
the water thingeys have rearranged
They've grown and multiplied
they look like beach balls of the jello kind!

My daughter screamed "Mom, come quick and look!
There's balls and balls of some yucky gook!
It's everywhere in your flower beds
oozing and goozing like liquid lead!"

I don't know how to get them out
but my flowers don't seem to mind
I guess I'll let them be for now
maybe they'll disintegrate with time

But as folks walk by and turn their heads
What will they think of me
"Oh, that's just Carla's garden,
she's added a new variety."

Water crystal thingy things. Yep they sho-nuf swell up don't they.
One of the ways we use them, 'cause it gets so hot here is;
ie you're making a bandana, cut it twice as wide fold it over and sew the side and one end.
Put a teaspoon of the dried crystals in the open end and sew it up.
Once soaked, they gain 50 times their weight so a tsp is plenty to use.
Hang this around your neck. Sew on tail extentions if you want, makes it easy to tie.

[Remember the old water bags people used hanging over the front of their car] Pictures anyway!
The water was cool on the hottest day.

Hint; make several, they do dry out returning to their natural state, so you might want a spare or two.
If you keep yours as I do in an ice chest /cold water be warned!
On a hundred plus day you'll think you walked into a freezer for a few minutes.
[They work by cooling the blood running to your brain]

I did this last summer. I put some in the bottom part of the pot and then we had some hard big rains. One morning I looked and saw that the baby hosta(the June that maybe you sent to me)was about 2" above the top of the pot. I didn't need to water that pot all the rest of the summer.

I did the water crystal neck/head bands a couple weeks ago. I bought some of the cheap head bands at the dollar store and Dollar General, cut a small slit in the back side of them and poured about 1 TBSP. of the water crystals in each one and soaked them in ice water. They are big enough to keep me cool for most of a morning, half an afternoon, or all evening until dark while I work in the yarden. I also keep some which were soaked in ice water in double freezer bags(a quart size inside a gallon size)in case I over filled the smaller bag. Sure enough, I had over filled with some of the ice crystals and it leaked into the bigger bag. I keep those slightly to solidly frozen to put against my back while I drive on long trips. It sure saves me a lot of lower back pain.
