Beautiful medians!

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

On a recent road trip my DH and I were very impressed with how beautiful the medians (between lanes) were in Virginia and North Carolina. They planted daylilies at various places and they were in full bloom. Absolutely gorgeous!! It gives the travelers something very pleasant to look at instead of the usual grass and weeds.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

The first time I was in Virginia I took pictures of the medians through the windshield of my rental car - it was late Spring and some organization had planted wild flower seeds for miles and miles - they have shielded most of the freeway on both sides with forrest - I agree - just beautiful. It certainly is a far cry from the ugliness of So. California freeways.

We have also been impressed with the Phoenix/Scottsdale freeway medians and side plantings/off-ramps and city street medians - they have planted many beautiful native plants that bloom throughout the year - really nice.

West Virginia had wildflowers and South Carolina had several different plantings of which I had no clue what they were. There was something about the daylilies that really caught our eyes.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Yep...they're nice, ain't they!?

In NC, the plantings are funded by the State and the plantings are done by either the State or County road crews. The money comes from those people who order personalized license plates. Pretty cool system, eh?

Crossville, TN

While I was traveling through the South I saw some that were planted by individuals...usually in memory of a loved one....just like the trash pick up program...signs giving credit to the gardener was nice. Jo

TN has poppys and bachelor buttons. Pinks, reds, purple. Very pretty.

Dori, I kept thinking about you and Jennifer the whole time I was looking at all those daylilies. :)

"T"

And guess who "bought" one of those license plates for wildflowers :-) It goes on the front of the vehicle as NC only has one plate

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

hehehe....no problem with that, vic!

They also use the money from those "vanity plates"...you know, the ones on the rear of the vehicles that say things like "DG Rocs" or "DG 4-evr"!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

There's a stretch on Ohio 33 that has thousands of cosmos blooming in the summer. It's between Lancaster and Logan, I'm thinking. Another place we've been had large clusters of the giant sunflowers growing at intervals. That was really a show!

It sure makes a road trip pleasant seeing all the flowers. Generally, or at least in the past, all you saw was tall grass, weeds, dead animals, and garbage. Seeing flowers and actual plantings makes everything look better.

It's a fantastic idea!!
