fast drivers

Marysville, WA(Zone 7a)

As a comment to Karrie20X's post on the Brug forum I'd like to say I agree about careless drivers ignoring the speed limits and dangerous driving.Seems there is'nt much that can be done but to have police patrol all the time, or try traffic circles at intersections (very costly). We have the opposit problem in several areas. In order to (in my opinion) run cases through his Court without giving the 'offender' an opportunity to explain, deny or complain, a District Court Judge and a couple Deputy Sheriffs told the County Traffic Engineer that the normal "when children are present" signs were "ambiguous" and they wanted new signing put up.The new ones say 20 MPH "6:00 to 5:00".Thats every day of the year, whether school is in session or there are any pedestrians in sight.Talk about a money maker! The rub is that on the busiest street with the new signs and a normal 35MPH speed, the 85th percentile speeds are between 34MPH and 42MPH.Didn't mean to rant and rave, but Traffic Engineering and Safety was my job for many years and the most frustrating part was reviewing accident reports and seeing the huge loss of life and property due to speeding, and not being able to do anything to reduce it.It's a people problem, not always a design problem.end of sermon.BTW,the new signing has'nt worked unless the motorcycle boys are there writing tickets.

People fly through our sidestreet, and we're by a school. One time I called the bus garage and reported a bus driver who drove really fast down the street with kids on his bus. People use our street as a shortcut and don't heed the signs. I agree that signs should spell out the times lower speed limits are in effect, not just "during school hours".

GW, I have followed Sheriff's cars on one of the 20MPH zones on three occasions and even they didn't pay any attention to the speed limit.Used to think it was just young kids causing the problem, but it's all of us. Thankfully nobody has been hurt yet.

Don't even get me started on that...I wish I had a dollar for every time I've seen a squad car roll through a stop sign, no use a turn signal, or do some other thing which would get us a ticket if we did it. I appreciate the police, but it irks me when one pulls out and cuts me off after rolling through a stop sign. I know...Everyone's human.

They put in speed bumps on some of the busier residential streets in my neighborhood. It's kind of a pain, but it probably slows down traffic. (I don't live on one of these busier streets.) If they were meant to discourage people from using those streets altogether, they failed in that regard. What's really ludicrous to see is Hummers and big SUVs gingerly going over those speed bumps like their suspensions were made of glass. :-)
