I'm getting mixed reviews on pruning. Some have recommended cutting back (quite drasticly) in the fall. But, with traditional hydrangeas, if we do any hard pruning (central Arkansas) it considerably hinders blooming the following year. Help, please!!
Oakleaf hydrangeas...to cut or not to cut
http://www.paghat.com/oakleafhy.html
go to this site and it tells you about pruning oakleaf hydrangeas. It is kind of complicated according to where you have it planted, whether it is climbing or not, and how you want it to flower next year. If it were me I would only prune it to shape it or keep it fitting the spot where planted. I think the best time is late summer or early fall. hope this helps. Jenny

We have a huge Hydrangea quercifolia (easily 6-8 feet wide and 8-10 feet tall) that I have to prune every year in order to keep it from encroaching on the heat/air unit next to it. Blooms great every year - I typically do it after the spring blooms have begun to fade (I see no reason to deprive us of its blooming beauty ;o)
