Watched Threads

Editing one's entry in a previous thread should IMHO bump same. All you Threadwatchers, true or false?

not necessarily . . . if I go in to edit the spelling on posts I made this morning, I don't want that to bump the thread. If it would bump the thread, I prolly wouldn't do it.

If editing a post touched the date of your post, it would throw the order of the thread all out of wack. Then, Skip to New would point to your (old) post.

Editing a thread should be for simply fixing typoes. If you have new information to add, add a new post. When you edit the thread with new information, most people will miss that information. But if you put it into a new post, they'll all see it.

Thanks Dave - I'd never thought about that. Good idea.

Makes sense. Thanks.

unless yours is the last post and you forgot to add something so you do a quick edit and then it's still 'skip to new'...is that kosher?

If I understand Dave's explanation, it is best to add a posting to the thread if you have additional info. That will bump it forward. I appreciate the courtesy when someone adds an explanation with their edits such as 'Edited for mis-spelling'. That lets me know that I didn't miss any of the content of the thread.

In the past, we've had some incidents in which the discussions on a thread got pretty heated. When the posters were all online at the same time, posting unpleasant comments then deleting them out was a passive/aggressive act that caused hard feelings and left the rest of us wondering what all the fuss was about. I haven't seen that sort of a thing in a long time and I don't miss it.

Preview is a nice option, since it gives you a moment to consider what you have written before hitting the send button. If I sent half the stuff I discard in Preview, I'd have twice as many posts on DG and half the friends! I think that the system we have works pretty good, but new suggestions bring new innovations, as well, I guess.

OK, I'm dumb! I found where I find out how many threads I am watching (3 :( ), but I have NO clue how they got there. How do you choose to watch a thread? I'm watching 23 forums - does that count? :)

you're definitely not dumb, just haven't figured out how it works yet. :) The forums are the different categories, etc. Then each forum has a cazillion threads or topics. At the top of each thread, you will see - 'Watch Thread - Print - Post Reply - Skip To New'. Click on the 'Watch Thread' and the next time you click on 'Dave's Garden' (either the vine in the top right corner or on the bottom of a page, etc.) and you bring up your home page, any 'watched' threads that have new posts on them will be at the top of your page, in the 'Thread Watcher'. Does this explain it ok?
