and
So,whats growing on your deck this summer????
This is my forum because everything I have except roses are in containers Like 45 plants maybe more. Mr. T you were saying that there isn't enough sun under the patio. I haul stuff out get them some sun. Hide them if there is too much. Even all my passis are in pots. It also helps to control them. LL is back on her cycle(so to speak) blooming away!
Monterey your petunias are amazing. That's what I like about them - big impact, small $$
BTW how do you get your abutilon to bloom like that? Is it just living in Cal? We have the weather for them, I think, (New Orleans) but everytime I buy one it just gets spindly and ugly looking. Then when I prune it back it sulks and refuses to flower. Is it fertilizer or what?
Kwells thanks for the link - I am saving it to anonymously email to my hubby for Christmas.
revclaus, can you tell me please, what is the name of the plant in the trough container (the green one on the left at the front of the pic) with the heart shaped leaves?
I love coming into this thread. Watching the new pictures as they arrive is giving me lots of ideas for my own containers. I think my DH is wondering why I *need* more containers, more potting soil, and MORE plants. (Our yard is nearly 2 acres!) If he ever actually *asks* me, I'm prepared to blame Y'ALL! :-D LOL
Thanks for sharing your wonderful views with everyone! As soon as I have something growing in mine, I'll share too. :-)

DD What are you fertilizing with. I transplant mine when I get them to a bigger container right off. The growers have them at their peak when you buy them . I make them learn a new grow pattern. I have had the same problem with certain ones. They seem to like 15-30-15 for growth. 10-52-10 for flowering. That's Miracle-Gro water-soluble. They say full sun but I think it's to much. They need good drainage. I use sand, potting soil and peat, but not too much peat. It is dry we get no rain. Your's may be drowning.
Yep thats right up my alley,I have one like that but on the orange buff color, not yellow and not orange, waiting for it to bloom.
Same here never can get one of theose flowering maples to do very well, overwatering is my problem I think.
OMGosh Monterey that is gorgeous! I could easily become an addict if I could just figure out how - its probably the water problem - right now the name of the game is rain :> Literally, it has rained everday for 2 weeks. All the succulents MollyMc so kindly sent me have passed away, except for a couple of what-cha-ma-call-em tricolors. I never realized abuts have a prob. with rain - they are always billed as "tropicals" right? Also, I kept them in full sun and used a lot of peat - seems like I'm doing it all wrong. Maybe I'll try again.
I have tons of water soluble fertilizer but haven't been able to use it. Our peak growing season is also our peak rain season! I feel ridiculous watering the poor plants even more! Been using Osmocote.
Tman - I used to do all pinks too, then I had this revelation that hey, these are the TROPICS, so what are you doing trying to grow all that pink stuff that melts out in June? I am now an red/orange/yellow/purple person, cept for my hydrangea area. Never thought it could happen to me. Used to HATE orange. Helps that all the gardening mags are now admitting that something beside blue and pink can be pretty.
Julie, those are morning glories. Some kind souls sent me some seeds, and I'm not sure what that particular one is. It might be Scarlet O'Hara. I'll post again after they all flower. Hopefully the colors are all compatible!
monterey, that is such a gorgeous abutilon! The seeds I started from Callalily are just starting to get buds (only 4" tall:) Do you winter them inside? I've seen them at the garden center for $14, but none of them even close to being as beautiful as yours. ( I'm new to abutilon)
Thanks, Kathy

DDiva,I guess, because all the neighbors gave me a lots of them, your right when it gets terribly hot here its the reds and oranges the yellows that thrive in the gardens.
They(Abutilon) go down to about 25f but I generaly take them in if it is going below 30f. Being in a pot makes it easy. In the morning I haul them out. In our zone it's a lot easier then the other folks. Pull up my page there is a lot of pics of the various kinds. These guys are called Tangerine and White.
Hi all you petunia fans! Here in Illinois -- they are the annual of choice - like the sun and give you lots of bang for your buck! The trick to them is to dead-head, dead-head -- snip off the flowers as they die, below the bloom, cut the little stem close to the branch they are growing on -- snip, snip every day and they will keep flowering all summer long. If they get leggy -- cut them back and they will fill in and keep going. You can gather seeds from them for next year -- they are very tiny -- just sprinkle them on top of soil and mist until they get going in either flats or pots and you will have enough for many containers or borders. I start mine under lights in January in the basement and transplant into pots and hanging baskets after last frost (around Mother's Day!) here. Happy gardening!
YulOrd you are amazing - if I deadheaded my petunias everyday my kids would starve. They just have to manage as best they can (the petunias I mean)
well, sometimes the kids too...
monterey, you're pics are beautiful! I wish the garden centers here carried some of the Abutilon like yours. Have to mail order I guess.
Sami, I just happened to find these planters-look very similar to LV, but check out the price on the 3 tier one-YIKES!!

Kwells go down to SF or even Sabastapol. In SF Potrero Gardens(they have a website) will have about 10 varieties. There over in SF kinda by the Giants area
Kwells I see what you mean by the price. I think I will have to pass on those even though they are very beautiful.
Montery what as beautiful flower. I love it. I cant wait to get in our new place so I can start planting

Well, these pictures are beautiful, I tried to post mine earlier today, but couldn't, so i'm trying again, I do alot of container gardening. Main reason, "because I have to make room for them in the ground, and I just don't want to LOL. alot of the container plants have to be brought in the greenhouse in the winter anyways.
here you go.
kathy_ann
guess you figured these weren't deck pics but patio pics, hope that 's ok LOL
give anything to have a deck though LOL still trying after 4 years to get one around the above ground pool, haven't got one yet though,

Those were great, you have so much shade, and dappled shade as well,I need something that is about half and half shade.
The shade is just around the porch area, and half into the front yard, the rest of the l0 acres is full sun, and I mean scorching sun LOL that area by the back porch is a perfect haven for plants, they really seem to like it there, I can plant seeds there on that table, and that big tree 's leaves protects them from the bad rains. It works out pretty well for them there.
It's my favorite place to be too LOL
I'll bet !And even catch a cool breeze now and then too!
Love your table set up! Are all those plants really for me? Aw shucks, you shouldn't have...if you saw my pitiful lath house you would feel sorry for me and send lots of plants. REALLY pitiful after seeing your awesome set up. Us city folks have it tough.
LOL I traded about 40 bars of goatmilk soap for that table LOL she was a friend, and loved my soap and I needed a couple tables, I got two of them, one's inside and I put this one outside with a table cloth over it, it's going into the greenhouse this winter too. It is a really convenient set up for me. I need all the help I can get in that department. I do get a nice cool breeze through there all thetime, don't water that often, in fact , I have to watch the new seedlings, hoping they dry out in a couple days or they get moldy, I got one tray sitting in the sun right now so it will dry out faster. LOL too much water and not enough sun, causes troubles too LOL
Delphinium, I use to live in Pearl river and Slidell Louisiana when I was ateenager. that was quite a while back, LOL
Hi, Kathy, et al!! I've been reading this list a while and wanted to tell you that my daddy was born on the Pearl River in Enon, near Franklinton LA, I was born in NO, and now we live in southeast Arky, in Dermott. For goodness sakes, please tell me about Goat Soap. I'm also attaching a few photos of what I'm growing in containers, etc, around our decks.

#3 is on the flagstone in our barn grotto...yes, I like caladiums!!
#4, these are my brugmanias that I planted in a tomato box and they have only been there three days and the ones closest already have buds, if you can believe that. The one in the back right corner is a seedling and has doubled in size. I don't know if I can keep them there too long, I was just trying it out to see if it would work. That's it folks, have a fun day!!!! SherryLike
Edited because I type too fast...

Nice pictures, now, It'snot goat soap, LOL everybody asks that how do you make soap from goats, LOL I make goatmilk soap, instead of using water I just use milk. that's all. check out this link.
http://davesgarden.com/t/423657/ well, don't know why you can't click on this link, it's in the crafts forum,
kathy
neato. Ill have to read that other thread later
Thanks, Kathy, I enjoyed the link very much!!! Do you make lye soap??
Guess I have to get in this deck-growing act, too. This house is in so much shade that if I want things in the sun, they have to be on the small deck off the upstairs bedroom.
Here's my tomatoes, plus some basil, tarragon and EE's. There are 6 pots of tomatoes (2 each Brandywine, Grape and Red Rose) and the largest are the Brandywines, seeds started about a month earlier than the others.
SherryLike your garden is absolutely gorgeous. Now I have to go outside and tweak mine some more. Note to self - more caladiums next year!
