Elephant ear ???

Fountain, FL(Zone 8a)

I got a bunch of EEs at the Fl. swap. So far they're doing great. Some of them have "thingies" growing out from the bottom. I guess they look kinda like a root. What are they? and should I be doing something with them? I can post a pic if need be. I've never been around EEs before so am clueless. Thanks.

Do you have a pic of them? Some multiply by tuber and others send out runners that shoot out new plants. You don't really have to do anything with them but if the pot is loaded full, you may want to get a bigger pot. Or are they in the ground? I love ears!!

Badseed...I'll get a pic of them later to post. They are in the ground...planted to hide the view of my neighbor's garbage cans...can't wait till they're huge! LOL

Ginger, seeing your question brings up one of my own. I've never grown EE's, but got one bulb at the GARU.

I planted it according to the best information I could find. Now I see what looks like 3 thingys starting to poke through. Is this normal?

You may have had one that had one central eye and 2 side shoots. Take good care of them....plenty of water and lots of sun.

Thanks, Bleek! I'll tend it best I can. It is in an area that gets the most sun I have available (6-8 hours) and I water often as I have lots of pots on that deck.

Ginger_H, it looks like you have a runner that will form a baby at the end of it. Have fun!

Ginger I've never seen an EE do that. Maybe you should rename it an ET. hehe Elephants Tail. Oooh my time for bed?? I bet Rootdoctor or someone will know whats going on.

darius, my EE is doing the same thing yours is except mine came up with about 12 "thingies." :D So now I know they're side shoots. It surprised me too and I have been meaning to post the same question-- so thanks :)

I can't remeber the termonology I think it is called tube-o-lose. it is going to give you a baby... some through babies off by off sets out of the bulbs. something similiar to the tube-o-lose like bulb-o-lose. how ever you spell it...

Sorry I disappeared on you. I stayed busy all day potting up plants from a recent DG visit! LOL Yep, those are babies or will be soon. I had never seen them do that until last year. I had little octopus ears. Congrats! You are a new mommy. ;)

So I'm havin' babies?...no 2:00am feedings I hope! LOL

Do I just leave them alone or can I "Whack and Plant?" Some are having twins and triplets...maybe even quads and quints!

Yes elyearcrazy,I do believe they are your "youngins". At the end of the day you were tossing lots of stuff in my Jeep! Did you pass on a pineapple by any chance? The black EEs are doing good too. Will they be happy in a large pot or do I need to jump them into the ground?

Leave them attached until you actually have nice baby plants on the end. Have fun.
