The Long Days of Summer

Louisville, KY

Now that school is out I see children/young people in the neighborhood playing basketball or skate boarding. I remember that on hot days, we always watched for the milk man make his route and he would share his ice with us. Why did it taste so good?
What memories do you have of the long days of summer when you were young?

Gary, we lived with my step-mother's family the summer I was 12 (which would have been 1952) while my dad was at sea.

They had a Model A and a Model T outfitted with snow cone racks and ice bins on the backs. I remember grinding ice to fill the bins, and helping make a zillion flavors of the syrups. We'd drive into a neighborhood, stop at a corner, and ring the bell. All the kids would come running, with their nickels. Most said, "Gimme a RED one!"... didn't matter if it was cherry or strawberry as long as it was red.

My favorite was root beer or lemon-lime.

When I wasn't helping out, we'd walk over to the train tracks and put pennies on the tracks. I don't remember if we ever found any flattened pennies, though!

Darius, we had heard from the older kids about the penny on the track and tried it. My thoughts ---"what a waste." I saved up so I could get some of those large one cent cookies or Big Daddy all day suckers.
