I was so sure the other day that 2 of the seedlings I grew had to go to brug heaven. Now I am having all sorts of guilt and second thoughts. Esp. Stubby. He is so tall and proud and just a happy tree.
Should I pass them around if people want them before I off them or should they be totally obliterated? If I do pass them about, should they leave home nameless?
Lots of us will be faced with this, this year. What is our community think on it?
So hard to commit murder!
Awww Kell! Im sorry you have to get rid of this beauty! Heres a link I remember vividly.. http://davesgarden.com/t/409231/ugly+duck hope that helps?
I found the parents Shelly, L'Amour X BF.
Here Stubby is last year.

Stubby looks mighty "special" to me Kell!
Kell,I can see how you need to make room, some of your up and comers need space,it can be tough in a small yard.
Why would you NOT want to offer your unwanted brugs to others? Think of how happy you might make someone else.
Kell, make it simple on yourself. Keep only the plants you LOVE in your yard. Stick with your goal. This is what I've started to do. There are many reasons why I love a plant. Foliage, bloom time, hardiness in my zone. The list goes on. This is the only way I can keep my hobby in check. I think I learned this collecting hostas. You should have seen the amount of plants I collected one year. *groan* It wasn't a pretty sight.
To pass around or not? Tough one. If your not happy with it, I'd toss it. If it is passed on, imagine how hard it will be for someone else to get rid of it.
I don't think there's anything wrong with sharing un-named seedlings. Think of the zillions of nurseries that sell them un-named. Just mark it as a Kell seedling. I bring my unwanteds into work to give away. Most people that are new to a plant don't care about the name anyway... and they'll promptly forget it. When starting out they never think down the road they'll have 50+ cultivars to keep track of.
A lot of the daylily hybridizers sell their culls to landscaping companies. When your see the "mixed" daylily deals in the catalogs they're most likely culls that weren't registered for one reason or another.
I think Stubby is kinda cute, maybe its just the name, lol.
I'd like to work with his pollen, since his parents seem to be such well standing members of the community!!
jen
Sue, Oakes daylily farm would have open house and give their culls as gifts just for coming out! I'd forgotten about that. The iris hybridizer would do the same with his iris, he simply marked the seedling cross and sold them for $3 each. I thought it was a great bargain because most were beautiful.
Aw find Stubby a home. He is trying his very best! Someone would be sure to love him.
SOS! Save Old Stubby! :-)
He's beautiful Kell and if he's not defective, I think you'll make some people very happy by sharing him. Think of him the way you would if he were old clothing; although you don't want or need them anymore, they're in good condition and someone else could use them. :-)
Kell, why not pollinate it back with one of the parents and see what it grows? Or send it to someone with the parentage listed so they can pollinate it.
Definitely pass it along if you can easily do so. IMHO there are people who have no interest in hybridizing, but would love to have an "Angel Trumpet" in their yard. I gave some seedlings away to class-mates and they were thrilled. I asked that they retain the nametags and advise me when they bloom, but who knows... Your stubby would make a nice gift to a brug newbie. Gretchen
Looks like the brug world might be looking for a short brug...your outcast, might be someone elses dream...I say pass it on. He will be loved somewhere! Looks pretty to me!
Too bad I live ALL the way over here. I would take him! Do you just not have room? You could donate it to one of the colleges. My cc loves donated plants. Anything for the greenhouses, the more plants the more experience we all get in ghclass. Mere
**********SAVE STUBBY**********
Besides, thats my nephews nickname, lol
Kell, From a new Brugie's standpoint, Give it away.
I only have seeds started & a few sticks rooted. I would LOVE a larger plant. Even if it's not a "named" or a prefect one.
That's my view being new to these plants!
Save & share him! Someone will LOVE to have him in their yard. I bet you could find a new home for him pretty quick. I live too far away to come dig him up for ya! Or I would!
XXXXXXSAVE STUBBYXXXXXX
Kell, I think Stubby needs a better name and then if you don't want to keep it, go ahead and send it to people who do want it if you want to do that, but give it a name first. Without a name, it could be named by several people and there would be so many duplicates with different names then. JMO.
You can't dig him up, he is too close to many others. I totally did everything wrong last year in this brug bed.
I agree Brugie, less confusion out there if even the no names are named so we know the genes.
You know it occurs to me now that I should ask Susie what she wants done with her 2 babies.
HPluver, LOL........ maybe I will send Stubby to college. You know my son is graduating in 2 weeks so it would be great fun to have Stubby go as long as there is no tuition!! What is a cc?
@@@@@@@ Stubby Must Go @@@@@@@@@
If he doesn't meet requirements of the grower to merit a place in the sun , he should be composted instead of spreading an inferior brug around.
Good Grief Charlie Brown, Like there is NO shortage of named brug cuttings to be had for next to nothing.
My point being ..........What does Monika do with all her inferior plants ....... H-mmmmm ???
There certainly is a shortage of named brug cuttings in my part of the world..
Wrong time of the year ,
............................ just wait until fall when everyone is cutting and chopping ,getting ready to over-winter the trees that will not fit into the house , garage, basement or GH.
You should be able to get at least a dozen if not more =))
If you want to share it Kell, let people evaluate it in different parts of the country, it's okay with me. I sort of like the name Stubby, but sounds like a cigar or something.
Kell... I think you need to personally deliver me one.. I'll even pick you up at the airport and let you sit in the front seat..
Have you considered Stubby's shortcomings into consideration, of hybridizing a patio brug? One that meets the requirements of the owner that hasn't the space to grow a full size brug? Save Stubby, and let him reap the rewards of his stamina, and desire to grow and bloom...take what he's offering, and change the brug world as we know it today~ Let Stubby prove himself, as a brug and not what a few growers decide is a brug................Save Stubby!! Share Stubby!
kell, I have been gardening at 3 other sites besides home. One is a community center, and 2 are historic houses. Perhaps you have some neighborhood buildings or parks that could use a little sprucing up.
Kell send him out to a few to evaluate, and save your self a small piece just incase. I like the shape of the bloom, maybe it would be a good one to work with. Does it seem to be tolerant of bug attacks? It looks like it likes full sun.
please would love anyones discards, a cutting , cuttings , why destroy something thats alive growing someone else would love...I'm the drooling picture looker!!! blessings all.. twyla
Community College!!! It's cheap and they have great GH's. Honestly I would take Stubby, just not his shipping charges. I go back in the fall for ornamental hort. and landscape design. My BF's cousin and I along with a mutual friend have a great idea about greenhouses and organic food, and botanical gardens and honey and whatnot. So I've decided on CC. And they love donations. However "stubby" they are! Mere
by all means, save stubby!
and if you dont want him, someone else most certainly does (i'd love him! lol)
i really needa get some brugs in my yard!
lol
cuttings, anything that anybody else doesnt want, i'll take 'em
well, to a certain extent ofcourse
there's only so much room in my yard, yanno
:)
if you dont want Stubby i do!!!
i will give him a good home. i take all unwanted brugs as i have only five of them. those five get babied too. just ask hubby.
me i dont care if they are nameless. to me they are mine and thats all that matters. if you asked me the names of mine now honestly i would tell you thats peachy and yellow and whity and pinky. i dont know their true names. i am bad at keeping tags.
but if truely getting rid of them let me know . marie
I don't share culls..just destroy them.Passing them around will only lead to their propagation someday elsewhere and then we have even more un-named seedlings of little merit. We need to keep only proven hybrids. The plant could have the most beautiful flower ever seen..but if it only blooms once a year then its history here. Just my feelings..

I agree with Eclipse.
LOL, I always agree with Eclipse.
But he's right. Totally right.
There will be lots of great Brugs that don't make the cut this year,it will make the strong, stronger, this was a great cross, something that deserves a name could have came from the same pod.Who knows what lurks out there.
Sorry Stubby,it was nice to see you.But See Ya.
OH poop, send Stubby to me!! I love these plants, and don't think I'll ever try to hybridize. He will just have a good home with me. I have a greenhouse that I can overwinter him in too. Save Stubby!! I'll send for him!!
And this is from a girl who has yet to see her first Brug flower at home! I am watching a bud though.....daily.....
Why on earth would you want to kill a plant?
Karrie, if every brug seed was allowed to grow, this country would have forrests of brugs. We have to only keep the best. After you have grown brugs for a while, you will understand it easier. I know it seems hard to throw something out that you have waited months on to see bloom, but you too, will do it. With so many new plants being named each year, my inventory has to be thinned out each fall. I dispose of whole plants that the year before, I couldn't be without. It happens every year. Some go and some stay.
I'm sure going to have to thin out my colletion this Fall and get rid of all the Frosty look alikes and some that I have several of.
