What are "jiffies" and why do we have a timer?

What does it mean? I like Jiffy peanut butter. :~)

Hi tc, there's a thread on the Dave's Garden forum called New Member Page that deals with jiffies. It's posted on Feb. 6, '04. Either go there or put jiffies in the search and it comes up as the third link. I should do a link for you but still haven't gotten around to reading the 'how to' on that. :(

Thanks Kooger! I found the following quote from Horseshoe, he's such a cool dude.

"Jiffies" a dave-ism meaning a very short span of time, as in "be there in a jiffy!"

I appreciate you tellin me how to find out what it meant kooger.

Literally, a jiffy is 1/100th of a second. 100 jiffies means 1 second. It tells me (and you) how long the computer took to generate and serve that webpage to you.

Interesting. I just looked up jiffy on dictionary.com for fun, and they agree! :)

jiffy

1. The duration of one tick of the computer's system
clock. Often one AC cycle time (1/60 second in the US and
Canada, 1/50 most other places), but more recently 1/100 sec
has become common.

That is interesting. The term "In a jiffy" has been around for a lot more years than computers but now it has a precise duration added to bring it up to date.
