Any antiques collectors or dealers here?

I need help to find out what a vessel was used for before I can find one!

My mother had a really thick clear glass piece (probably her mother's) that we used for whipping real cream. It wasn't fancy and was probably cheap when new. It stood about 6" tall, tapered some to the bottom, but the bottom was large enough to hold the hand-beater but would probably today hold the beaters of an electric mixer.

The top rim was rolled so it was never made to have a screw-type lid. I'd say the glass thickness was at least 3/8". It was wonderful to chill it before whipping the cream!

Without knowing what this container was used for originally, I can't "search" on the internet to buy one for myself. My mother is in a nursing home and of no help.

Darius,
I used to collect antiques but unfortunately have no idea what you're looking for. I'm sure someone here can help. Or you could always go ask at an antique store near you. I have a friend who works in one who might know. I can ask and see what he says. Good luck.

Maybe it was a crockery bowl? See attached http://pages.tias.com/7345/PictPage/1922266043.html

Am also finding them listed as beater jars.

darius, many of the old butter crocks look similar in design also. http://members.tripod.com/d.munroe/crocks.htm

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

But hers was clear glass, not crockery. I'll do some searching, too, Darius.

Try this link and look under Kitchen/Beaters and churns.
See if anything looks like what you have?

Y'all are SO great!

Now that I have looked at some of the links, it did resemble this glass churn, just the glass part: http://www.patented-antiques.com/images/WEB%20Sale%20Catagories/Kitchen%20web%20sale/Kitchen%20Written/Churn_Mixer/lfc25.jpg

Gives me at least a place to start looking. Many thanks!

Darius, try the link provided below.Look under Kitchen.

Then under,The Home Dairy/Making Butter.(Our best Butter Churn). They have wonderful reproductions. The Butter Churn can be used for mixing other things as well.We buy things from this company all the time.

sounds like the beater jar we have on the counter. There is a hand crank beater that has a metal skirt attached to it which fits over the rolled lip of the jar. Mother-in-law used it on the farm.

Thanks, y'all. Does sound like 'beater jar' fits it. I'll keep an eye out using that term!

Darius there is a good one on e bay just listed in working order kinda cool. Lots of good pictures Ernie

Thanks, Ernie. I looked... the jadite jar is about the size my mother's jar was. I'd prefer a clear glass one if I can find one.

Darius the first miss kitty link was the one I saw . It is clear and if I wasnt so computer inept I think I would bid on it. Ernie

Miss Kitty... Yes, the first one is much like what I remember... except wqe didn't have the beaters (nor do I care to have them.... elec. mixers are so much easier, LOL!). I've put that on my "watch" list for now because Kathleen thinks her mother may have one in her shop.

The second one is nice too, but already up to $40... too much for this woman on just social security!

Thanks, Miss Kitty! Just remember I have a VERY limited budget, and while I want this for ordinary use, I'm NOT an antique collector.

Franklin, LA(Zone 9b)

understood, darius :)
if it's too expensive for me to consider buying it, i wont bother sending it to you for consideration
lol :)

m_k, I had a reply from the dealer who has the second beater jar you posted... it's only 1/8" thick glass. I want one at least 3/8", or close to it anyway.

The thing I liked about my mother's jar was that the mass of the glass kept the chill longer... we chilled it first, and put it on the table after whipping cream in it so it was the serving container as well as the 'beater' container.
