my mandevilla's not blooming

Brattleboro, VT

I have a plant that I've kept alive for 3 years. The 1st year it bloomed all season with light pink to almost red blooms depending upon the temps I understand. I haven't had any blooms since, but the foliage is thriving.

I read, in passing and now can't find the info again, that you need to cut back in order to promote blooms. Can anyone confirm this and/or give me guidence in how and where?

Okay, so I cut back my plant. Now I've only got a few leaves. Hoping for really warm weather and I'm keeping it watered well. We'll see.

Joanne, I see you didn't get any help and I was hoping you would because I have a Mandevilla in a pot my daughter brought me and it appears it is going to bloom. But, what do I do next year? I know I hve to keep it inside during the cold winter.

Maybe this will put it up front where people will see it.

The mandevilla only blooms on new growth. I've cut back my vines to 2-3 feet in early spring and now have buds forming (this one is 5 years old now). I've also left the vines and have had buds form, on new growth, at about the same time (on my 2 year old plant). The only ones I have seen bloom earlier here have had the benefit of warmer greenhouse temps.

I feed them with Miracle Gro 20-20-20 early in the year and with MG Ultra bloom starting in June.

My mandevilla has had trouble blooming this year too. I finally bit the dust and fed it some blue stuff and now it's blooming like crazy. I've never fed it before and it's always had plenty of blooms. I guess it was hungry??? :-)

OK Vic, clue us in as to what the "blue stuff" is!! Jeanette

I did cut it back and have new growth. No blooms yet.

I also cheated and bought a new plant. It was half price at the grocery store and had plenty of flowers. I've put them close together hoping one will encourage the other. I'll let you know. I did the Miracle Grow too.

Thanks for all the input.
