When ID ing plants

Linden, TN

I saw this at another forum and was wondering what you folks thought. Do you like to place an ID marker to the left or right or to the rear or to the front of the plant?

I do in front of the plant

Bethelridge, KY(Zone 6a)

Ditto.

Prattville, AL(Zone 8a)

Ditto...Always the front

Newcastle, ON(Zone 5a)

I place it to the right and towards the back of the plant. so as not to block the view of it..

Okay, it looks like the general consensus in Front and center, so that is where I shall place them.
Thank You,

I guess you are talking about when they are already in the ground? I put them behind the plant, so it does not distract you from the plant itself. It is mostly only there to remind me what is there. When they use to be on the side or front, my husband told me it looked like gravestones, and told me I should remove them. I think I agree it looks a lot cleaner hidden by the plant when you stand away. That is unless you have pretty decorative ones then I would say to put it to the side if the plant is taller than the marker.

for me it depends on the plant. Usually in front, or to the right.

For me if it is seeds sown or rooting cuttings I place the marker in the back center so as to not block my monitoring of the seed/germination and rooting progress. This of course is only for container stuff. If it is a well established plant I place the marker up front on the right side. None of my ground plants are marked but I'll have to hide them near the plant if I eventually need to mark them as Sweez does.

Rather similar to BF, I like to put a marker behind a young plant so I don't mistake it for a weed. After it is fully grown, I identify it to the front (usually left, but I'm left-handed...).

Exception if it is herbaceous and has leaves like some nasty weed, then I keep the identifier behind it in the winter so my hoe doesn't commit plantslaughter in the springtime....

Behind, so as to not detract from the beauty of the plant.
