Can we lower gas prices??

Decatur, IN(Zone 5a)

Hi all,
I'm pasting a forward that someone emailed me. Instead of forwarding to everyone I know, I figured I'd post it here and for those that choose to participate can do so. Those that don't can just go about their lives. I find this interesting and wondering if something like this will work? what do you think?
___________________________________________________

IT HAS BEEN CALCULATED THAT IF EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES DID NOT PURCHASE A DROP OF GASOLINE FOR ONE DAY AND ALL AT THE SAME TIME, THE OIL COMPANIES WOULD CHOKE ON THEIR STOCKPILES.

AT THE SAME TIME IT WOULD HIT THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY WITH A NET LOSS OF OVER 4.6 BILLION DOLLARS WHICH AFFECTS THE BOTTOM LINES OF THE OIL COMPANIES.

THEREFORE MAY 19TH HAS BEEN FORMALLY DECLARED "STICK IT TO THEM" DAY AND THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION SHOULD NOT BUY A SINGLE DROP OF GASOLINE THAT DAY.

THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE DONE IS IF YOU FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN AND AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN TO GET THE WORD OUT.

REMEMBER ONE THING, NOT ONLY IS THE PRICE OF GASOLINE GOING UP BUT AT THE SAME TIME AIRLINES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES, TRUCKING COMPANIES ARE FORCED TO RAISE THEIR PRICES WHICH EFFECTS PRICES ON EVERYTHING THAT IS SHIPPED. THINGS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHING, BUILDING MATERIALS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES ETC. WHO PAYS IN THE END? WE DO!

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IF THEY DON'T GET THE MESSAGE AFTER ONE DAY, WE WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN.

SO DO YOUR PART AND SPREAD THE WORD. FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND MAKE MAY 19TH A DAY THAT THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES SAY "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"

Sorry, gemilla but I think this is a hoax - it tends to crop up in some form or fashion every spring (as gas prices start to rise), and either takes the form of "don't buy gas on a certain date" or "don't buy gas from certain companies".

It's an interesting idea, but I think most economists would say that the problem isn't going to be resolved by refusing to buy gas one day (even if everyone actually complied, gas is a commodity, and retail outlets are but one of the ways it is delivered), but by all of us choosing to drive less, use public transportation, drive more fuel-efficient vehicles, etc.

I too have read this before. I agree in theory but know that not enough people would do it to have the desired effect. For instance, if we were low on fuel in the family vehicle, we would just fuel up the day before. That would push up the consumption for the day before the boycott which would cancel out the effect of the boycott.

The best thing we can all do is to reduce the amount of petroleum products we use over all throughout our lives. This means cooking larger amounts of food at once and reheating some of it in a microwave or eating it cold later, carpooling or finding other methods of travel, keeping our vehicles in top running order so they get maxamium fuel economy, heating with something other than LP gas and its relatives, etc.

I appreciate your concern and applaud you for the effort you have made.

Oops! forgive me for passing along a hoax.

Thank you for your replies and you both came up with a better idea, I think. Due to the rising prices I've already cut down on my driving. Unfortunately, plant shopping has to now wait till I have to make a run to that part of town so I can kill two birds with one stone. Otherwise, I'd just take a drive to browse and see whats new.

I think it is a nice idea, but I do realize that everyone will just fill up the day before. The best way to help is walk or take public transportation (like the bus) and limit driving our own vehicles.
