I was separating my crocus, which I have growing in a strawberry pot last week, and to my horror... baby slugs kept creeping out from the pockets! BLECH! Needless to say, the Diatom Earth was spread liberally on ALL of my potted plants.
The little buggers really like my cannas, which are coming up a month early this year. I ran out of Cocoa mulch, but I love the stuff! It does tend to breed little flying knats; probably because of the high moisture content here on the North Coast. It isn't uncommon to have 6-8 months of intermittent rain, which helps bond the cocoa hulls together, but also makes them mold, and creates a nice breeding ground for some icky critters.
However, when the sun finally comes out, the cocoa hulls keep the soil from drying out too fast, and I don't have to come home from work at lunch everyday just to water my garden!
You just can't beat the chocolate smell, though!

As the sun comes over the mountain....
I have an artist's brush and a tiny zip lock bag and I am making my first attempt to collect pollen. Is there a trick to this, I've hardly gotten any pollen at all.
I checked my seeds in the rockwool today and a couple have little round white nubbies, might that be a sprout?? I'm a bit concerned about mildew. because it continues to rain, non stop. So, I put them under the light, ya think that's the thing to do?? I think next time I'll peel them.
Early last evening I put Garden Safe Snail & Slug bait on the plants and it rained all night. Not a single slug today - except in areas where the plants weren't bothered, it's odd how they go straight to some plants and completely ignore others!! After getting a good soaking last night, this bait has the feel of marshmellow and is difficult to remove from your hands, shoes and clothing. No wonder that Westie ate it. If I have to use it again, I think I'll switch brands. SLike
Great Sue...let's go for it then! Would splitting 1/2 way go for you? I don't know about Tracy as she does have a dog.
You have a pink brug!? What kind is it? Can I have a cutting when you trim it please?
Margie
It's more of a peach-pink and of course you can have a cutting. Cuttings is what I plan to build my garden with now, am wanting a more tropical look (kind of a Hawaii, Jamaica, Florida, San Diego, Happenstance combo look :-) ) and I am doing research as I find the time. Need more brugs, cannas, want to try some castor beans (maybe get some seeds from someone here on this forum) still researching bananas (love the Abyssian one) love anything with a bit of that bronzed and lime green leaf look, so much to learn!
Your garden is very lovely. I just moved into this house in the Fall and am busy, busy trying to get it all planted before the hot summer temps. arrive. I know it will take a few years for mine to look filled in and as lovely as yours.
Patricia
Hi Patricia (another neighbor!) -
We are so lucky to live in a climate where we can pretty much garden year round. I know parts of Dublin are just as windy as it is here in Clayton.......are you contending with the wind too?!!
The Brugs stood up very well to the wind this winter, with only the loss of one large branch on one 'Charles Grimaldi'.
Your garden should shape up quickly.....I started with bare ground exactly 5 years ago. Here's the look I was going for with the start and the now views.
