Morning Margie -

It was a real treat to meet a fellow DGer face to face! The perfect ending to a couple of great days in the garden. And I so enjoyed meeting your travelling buddies too!

I've posted some thoughts on the Photos Forum on my experience with a garden tour in response to SoCal mulling over whether to tackle the experience too.

WOW, what a garden!!! And, I should have known it, I'm 'hanging out' with kids again, I love 'seeing' you guys and it's so nice to be able to put some faces with names. Happenstance I went to your member page and learned that you won the 2003 photo award - what an honor, I'm soooooooo impressed with the photo and 'knowing' the winner, considering that there are almost 100,000 DG subscribers!!! I tried to go to Happenstance Garden but, living in the boonies, I have dial up and it was impossible - cross your digits that we get DSL soon!!! Thank you all for sharing your visit!!!!!!! Happenstance, your garden is so beautiful! What an inspiration.

Hi Sherry -

There were lots of winners and wonderful images in the photo contest last fall. You can see all the winners at this link:

http://davesgarden.com/contest/2003/

And many other goodies on the "Extras" page which is linked in the right-hand sidebar of each DG page:
http://davesgarden.com/extras.php

Most of the images on my member page links are from last year, but you can see a lot of individual plant images that I've submitted to the PDB from here:
http://plantsdatabase.com/imagesbyuser.php?user=Happenstance

Other images are sprinkled in the forums. :-)

Candy, I am awed by the lovely arrangement in the first picture. For those, like me, who have NO design skills, could you possibly identify some of the plants (e.g., from left to right) in the photograph? Lovely, lovely, lovely!!!

Thanks for the links, Candy!!! One photo right after another with the most beautiful flowers!! There are some really talented gardners here, too many of you to name and I'd hate to leave anyone out, but that really was a fun tour, thanks all!! SLike

Hi Jean -

I did another image with lines drawn all over it pointing to the plants! Yikes it was hard on the eyes, so here it is with just some names for you. I think I got most everything. Most of these are in the PDB with images I've submitted, if you care to do a little further research.

Another absolutely Amazing garden.... Just awesome !!

Yes, yes! Thank you Candy!

I don't think I could ever duplicate this ("imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"), but I can refer to it for some idea of how to place and organize plants.

I don't know if you have a private landscaping business or greenhouse, but you should! How wonderful!

And if you could e-mail the picture with "all the lines" pointing to the plants, that would also be wonderful. To jyex@aol.com.

I feel like such a dufus when it comes to garden layout!

But I always look for pictures of your garden. A treat for the eyes! Thank you for letting us look.

Beautiful does not describe your garden. What a joy to look at.

Candy, I joined Dave's Garden just so I can check your images and posts, I was so inspired by your garden! I have been dreaming (day and night!) about it ever since. I really enjoyed meeting you and seeing so many different plants making such a wonderful tapestry of texture and color.
I will be using your photos and plant list as part of my 'shopping list' as I would love to create a look and feel I saw in your garden.

Northern California, CA

Hey Sue! Welcome to DG!!! So glad you climbed on board with us. I'm really a newbie around here too.....joined late last August. Look around and enjoy!!

Note to Terry, Dave: Do I get extra brownie points for this?!!! LOL

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Where's that napkin when you need it...there is drooling all over my keyboard AGAIN!

Love this picture, but there isn't one yet that I don't love of your gardens. :-)

OK, I just have to add a couple of thoughts here. Pictures are great, but the rest of the story is.....

Close your eyes and put yourself in a second story bedroom that opens onto the garden.

It's about 60F and there's a nice moon gently shining in through the plantation shutters.

The distant sound of moving water filters up from the garden pond below.

The breeze is light and airy and you can hear the palms and the timber bamboo rustling in the night.

As you drift off to sleep, the room fills with that unique perfume of the Brugmansia blooms wafting up from the garden below.

LOL!! She waxes poetic (or not) !! Come visit when you are up this way. This was the master plan when I started this garden, to fall asleep each night and think I was in Hawaii.

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

She's killing me again!

Not enough that Candy has us drooling over her garden (and on our keyboards), but now she is torturing us with sensory descriptions! LOL.

Keep 'em coming. You can't post too much about your garden for me....I love reading about it and the gorgeous pictures.

Welcome to Daves Garden!

SoCal.. pass the napkin this way when you are finished... that is a beautiful setting....

Isn't it great when you get to meet other gardeners you have been chatting with for a while??

Northern California, CA

Thank you all for your nice comments. :-)

This is my little corner of paradise and you really need to remember that this is "little." It is a typical California suburban lot......small. I lust after some of the gardens I see here on DG.....large sweeping gardens on a good sized piece of land.

We actually looked at 5 acres of land a few miles from here before we came to the conclusion that putting in roads, power lines, septic, and all the other things needed to make a piece of country property work just wasn't something we were up to. Plus the fire danger that is also a part of life in California.

Since this is the Brug Forum, I thought it might be nice to highlight the star of the first image in this thread. Here is Charles Grimaldi, one of two I bought at a local home store last May when they were about 20" tall. The leaves at the front of the plant are not chlorotic, they are sunburned from one of our March heat waves.

Beautiful!! I got a cutting of CG from a online daylily pal a couple of months ago and I am still trying to decide where to plant it. I am thinking next to my orange tree, gets half day morning sun, so afraid of that hot afternoon sun especailly like what we experienced in March and then again a couple of weeks ago.

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Candy...if you are collecting points for bringing people to DG, I notice that my DIL, Tracy has also joined today! That's 2 so far !!! Now we need Edith, Sue's mother and we will have the whole group!

Bet you didn't know that you would be meeting 3 members when you invited me, did you, I certainly didn't !!!

Mount Hermon, LA(Zone 8b)

I am a first-time brug grower and these are my two puny-looking specimens. I expect they will do better after they get proper care (especially some fertilizer).

Wow, Tracy is cute in her pink, and, of course, she is a 'baby', so young and cute!!!

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

Sherry...I should have said in the post...her name her will be lilystorm ! Say hello please if you see her and give her a big DG welcome!

Tracy is a real garden pal. A few weeks ago my oldest son
(her husband) and my youngest son made 2 raised garden beds for me. I had 4 yards of planting mix delivered to fill them with. As soon as Tracy heard that the mix arrived, she arrived at my home and together we filled the beds with almost all of the mix. Now, that is a good friend besides being a relative! She and I got addicted to daylilies together!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Margie posted: I should have said in the post...her name her will be lilystorm

Marge, PLEASE KICK me if I don' catch her post. I really have a diffucult time figuring out where i see what. PROMISE me that you will notify me when she posts!!! In the meantime I remain green eyed jealous, not because your sons made your beds, but because you can get planting mix delivered. Shoot, you live in paradise!!!!

LOL! Sherry I too have a difficult time finding things too! I remember when I joined last August it took me weeks to find my way around.

Welcome Tracy! (lilystorm)......there's so much to see here on Dave's.

Wow! Your garden is just fantastic. I love your pictures.

I could look at this website for hours (and have). Being new there is a lot to take in. I think getting the newsletters help. I found this forum because it was on the top of the list in the newsletter. Being curious, I took a look and found not only a wonderful picture but another plant I need to think about for my garden.

Thank you for sharing
