Let's talk art prints, frames, and mats.

When you frame a print is the frame style suppose to relate to the print? For example, I have a piece of art work from Mexico done on that primitive paper from bark. How should the frame relate to that style, if at all? And the size of the mat with a print, can you just call what you like? 2" or 3" or ?

Neat! I think the matting and framing is key in the presentation of a print. You can use matt and frame color to draw out colors in the print, for instance. Likewise, the size/thickness of the matting, whether you use single, double, or multiple colors/matts makes a difference. Sometimes matting a picture off-center can make a difference. Can you post a picture of what you're framing, and its dimensions?

gardenwife, my technology is limited. This computer is very valuable only because it is the only pc that came across on the Mayflower with the Pilgrims.

There are a lot of places you can go to if you want to look at different frames and mats. I mat and frame a lot of my own projects. I like the ability to choose exactly what I want. The metal frames are the easiest to put together, but I think, for the project you're working on, a wood frame would be best.

Framesbymail.com has a nice selection of wood frames if you want to get some ideas.

What's the average cost to have something matted and framed? I went on a collecting spree of botanical prints... The plan was to get them all framed but they've been sitting in a closet for 3+ years. I figured it would cost a fortune to take them all to a professional.

It can be expensive. However, if you buy all the necessary tools yourself, mat, cutting knife, frame, non reflective glass, etc. it is reasonable. Or go to the Goodwill type store and look for the frames you like and mat yourself and it is a real bargain.

My choice for framing stuff is Light Impressions. Two 16X20 metal frames at a local frame shop were $87.00, just the frames, no glass, matting or labor. I got the same thing from Light Impressions for $34.56. Had some shipping and had to wait a couple weeks, but the savings was worth it. www.lightimpressionsdirect.com should get their on line catalog.
